(NR 1:14) cided to cancel "Get Smart," but CBS had picked it up, and ABC was considering another NBC cancellation, "The Ghost And Mrs. Muir." Some new series definitely scheduled were "Then Came Branson," "My World And Welcome To It" and "Medical National Citizens Committee for Broadcasting, a group formed to upgrade TV (members included Harry 1 Belafonte and Robert Montgomery) had run out of funds, and there were no new donors in sight. Asked why material written about him never seemed to expose the real Jonathan Winters, the comic explained, "I think it's very difficult to find out what a person is really like.

And with the great majority of interviewers, there's never an opportunity to be serious. I think reporters feel seriousness won't make good reading, especially coming from a comedian. Then, in all fairness to them, a lot of actors are downright dull when you meet them out of role. Many of us, I'm sure, hide in our characterizations. Art is, after all, a way of hiding, you Johnny Cash Show," an hour-long variety series from Nashville, would begin on ABC in May as a summer replacement King's next NBC special would be a two-man show with Buddy 98-pound Elizabeth Baur, the 20-year-old feminine lead in.

"Lancer," a CBS western series, talked about getting into acting: "My dad was the head of casting over at Universal when I wanted to start acting, but he wouldn't help me; didn't want me to be an actress. I guess most fathers want their daughters to grow up and learn to type or something like that and then get married. But I got into acting anyway doing a corn flakes commercial." Until next time, look happy. SOMEBODY, BUT WHO? Somebody ought to tell Jackee Harry to stop shouting at everybody to use only her first name (Jackee) so she.can sound famous like Cher. When a star becomes important enough to be known by a single name, it isn't necessary for them to demand the honor.

It comes naturally. If Jackee Harry's "227" spinoff series next season (she will work in a New York health club) is a major success, changing her name should come without contest. Until then, she should simply be happy to be noticed and remembered by whatever name. Somebody ought to tell ABC to quit hiding their light inder a bushel. Do you know who they have signed as the star of a new sitcom for next season? If I said he is the funniest man in the world, would you know who I mean? If I said his career was almost destroyed by Ed Sullivan, would you know what I mean? If I said he has a smash-hit, one-man Broadway show, would you know who I mean? It's Jackie Mason, of course.

And ABC has him in a sitcom series about a man who, forced into early retirement, works with inner-city youths. If it captures just one-tenth of this guy's laugh-talent, it's bound to be a hit. Somebody should tell CBS to tell it like it is. Instead of announcing that they have a new hour-long series titled "Jesse Hawkes," they should announce that they have an old (cancelled) series with some new window-dressing. "Jesse Hawkes" is just "High Mountain Rangers" all over again starring Robert Conrad and sons except that instead of doing all their criminal-hunting in the mountains, the Conrads will also do it in the cities.

I tell you the truth, folks, Robert Conrad could sell sand in the desert. TURN BACK ago. (Animated) 9:30 AM (HBO) Winners in this compelling drama, an insensitive father pushes his teenage son too far. When he becomes too demanding, the youth begins to think of suicide as a way out. "How can I let a total stranger raise my baby?" While the older son (Chris Young) is unhappy about giving up his room. "The lady gets my room, and I've got to live with the geek." He means his younger brother (David Moscow), who responds.

"Hey, you're no prize. You leave yourdirty sweat socks all over the room." But when the live-in arrives, all worries but Mom's disappear, for the housekeeper from Australia is a young blond beauty (Lisa Wells). Chris immediately falls to his knees, certain this is an answer to his adolescent prayers and that Lisa has been sent to satisfy his every fantasy. He soon discovers otherwise, however, as he and his friend (Lightf ield Lewis) drill a hole in the bathroom wall in hopes of seeing Lisa naked. Instead, it turns out that Lisaends up seeing Chris naked, afterward making jokes about the size of "young, immature things" and "tiny, little carrots." This results in an estrangement which is only resolved when Lisa apologizes for being a bit nasty and Chris admits to liking her.

Except for the father, whose role appears one-dimensional or undefined, the characters are entertaining and the acting is above average, especially on the part of Lisa Wells (You may have seen her in that commercial about the Australian girl who uses the telephone to keep in touch with her American boyfriend). But for my part, the fact that this is such an obvious copy of another series even some of the lines seem lifted was too much to bear. Seeing a beauty like Lisa and hearing those constant references to sex and nudity, the public may approve of "Live-In but I cannot. For shame, CBS. Rip-offs are nothing new in television.

There has been a wide variety of copies of David Janssen's popular "Fugitive" series, some set in the old west, some in outerspace. Many called "Ben Casey" acopy of "Dr. Kildare" and "Family Hol-vak" a copy of "The Waltons." Wasn't "Follow The Sun" an imitation of "Route 66," and "2020" the same for "60 "That's Incredible" grew out of the popularity of "Real People," and it is highly unlikely that there would have been a "Tucker's Witch" had there not first been a "Bewitched." Common as they are, there is something sickening about these copies, perhaps because they are such unabashed admissions of a lack of creativity in television. The worst example of all (until now) was a copy of "Three's Company," the series which enjoyed a long life and high ratings by having two attractive young women share an apartment with one attractive young man. In 1982, NBC presented a terrible rip-off titled "We've Got It Made," which tried to earn those "Three's Company" laughs by having two attractive young men share an apartment with one attractive young woman, a live-in housekeeper.

Got It Made" lasted only a single season, but now. we have another series about a live-in housekeeper and it brings back many tasteless memories. This one, an obvious rip-off of "Mr. Belvedere," is CBS's Monday night offering, "Live-In." Just as with "Mr. Belvedere," the plot arises out of the need by the wife and mother of the household to return to work.

But in the case of "Live-In," instead of importing a British butler, the family imports an Australian housekeeper. Awaiting the live-in's arrival, only Dad (Hugh Maguire) is calm. Mom (Kimberly Farr) is worried about her latest child. EVENING 6:00 PM (J) (6) fJS) World of Disney Parent Trap Part 2.
