PAGE FIVE THE EVENING NEWS, HARRISBURG, THURSDAY AUGUST 14, 1924 July 6, and word had reached the detective that John J. Jones, of near Lansford, Carbon County, was marked THURSDAY, AUG. 14, 1924 as the next victim of the Mollies. He Today's Story in Pennsylvania History Mollie Maguires Commit Murders on Bloody Saturday, August 14, 1875 By FREDERIC A. The Mollies sat together in the smoking car bound for the Summit. McParlan was under suspicion by the Mollies, and Linden had slipped into the car unobserved, ready at any moment, to take the part of his brother EOUNDED.1871 Harrisburg quiet shadows of the great hills, in. detective, should he find himself in i trouble. Nothing occurred to require his services and Captain Linden feigned waiting for his wife to complete her shopping, received a bullet through his tilings and died the following afternoon. Thomas was arrested for assault on Dugan, but.

no one was arrested for killing Zimmerman. Another man was shot through the leg during this wild duel, alsq. another man was stabbed during 'the excitement. McKenna hurried to Mahanoy City where he found the country in a blaze of excitement, and as the people believed him the worst Mollie Maguire in the regions, he remained but a short time, when he took a train for Shenandoah. He was in Shenandoah four hours when he learned --who had fired the shot which killed Gomer James," and Tom -Hurley paid the price for his act on the gallows.

The result of this unexpected success, was that all the Mollies in Shenandoah engaged in grand bacchanal, and to get rid of them McKenna left the place and nt to Girardville. Here Jack Kehoe, one of the notorious Mollie leaders told him in a moment of confidence, that the murder of Squire Gwyther was the result of a drunken spree, and that Thomas Love, he was glad to say, had made his escape. This was truly Bloody Saturday, but by no means was it the end of, the ecials for Fri Sp that Switzerland of America, they fully discussed the situation and the work being performed. It so happened that while they were returning from this meeting McParlan otherwise James McKenna, as he was known to the Mollies, encountered some of the ringleaders of that organization; Alexander Campbell, Hugh McGehan, and others, all under suspicion for murder, Captain Linden remained in the position where it was "necessary to accompany the Mollies to their homes, but he never was in their company very many minutes before he learned much of value, to his chief, Allan Pinkerton. Such a great number of outrages were committed in the anthracite coal regions by the Mollie Maguires on Aug.

14, 1875, that the day came to be known as "Bloody Saturday." Early in the month symptoms of smouldering disorder began to increase in severity and numbers. The situation became so alarming that Superintendent Franklin, of the Philadelphia and Reading Company arranged to hold a meeting with the two great Pinkerton detectives, James McParlan and Captain Linden, who had been working for sometime among the members of this outrageous organization of criminals. This meeting was held at Glen Onoko, in the environs of Mauch Chunk. Here the three men cleverly managed to get together, and in the to sleep the time away, until tne urunKen crowd left the car. Linden continued his journey -to Tamaqua, and there awaited McParlan's arrival.

Reaching Summit, Campbell pressed the detective to remain all night at his house, and he thought it best not to refuse and did so. Campbell believed McParlan or McKenna as he knew him, had been in Mauch Chunk that day to obtain a new stock of counterfeit money, which he was supposed to be passing. McKenna had exchanged some money for crisp bills, but they were eenuine. Campbell arranged with the detective for a supply of the "spurious" bills, to be'delivered in the near future. This tended to restore Campbell's Economies That Make Purchasing a Real Pleasure 1 B.

Campbell was a candidate for the office of body master and McKenna was strongly for his election. Campbell then told him the plans for killing Jones, and after McKenna sang "Widow Machree" for Mrs. Campbell, he retired to his apartment.

Then came the Bloody Saturday events, which proved a horrible experience for the" people of Mahanoy Valley. The crimes for that day were two dastardly assassinations and one case of manslaughter, besides several cases of lesser crimes. The most heinous crime was the murder of Thomas Gwyther, justice of the peace, of Girardville. He was an inoffensive man, of mild disposition and, a reputable, public spirited citizen. Th miners of the Mahanoy Valley had received the first pay this day of any consequence since the long strike began and the result was that Girardville, in the evening, was crowded with drunken men.

At Shenandoah, Gomer James, a young Welsh miner, who had defended his friend, Tom Jones, when assaulted by Mollies- Aug. 11, 1873, and had since been' marked by them, was killed at a picnic in Hecksher's Grove, while he was inside a bar, waiting upon his patrons.

The assassin escaped in the darkness. Many disturbances occurred in Mahanoy City, and an innocent citizen lost his life, when a disturbance arose between William M. Thomas and James Dugan. Both drew revolvers and fired at each other. Thomas was shot in the face, but Christian Zimmerman.

It was out of the question for me to eat potatoes or any starchy food and, in fact, any kind of food I ate would sour in my stomach and cause heartburn and make me feel miserable. And besides this, my bowels were always constipated; liver was lazy and sluggish and my kidneys were inactive. This kidney trouble caused awful pains in my back and it also broke up my sleep for I would have to get out of bea three or four times a night. Through the day, I often had attacks of dizziness. And I had regular rheumatism in my limbs.

'I have traveled far and wide, Your Icy Highness. Through Mother Goose Country and over the ocean to Neptune's Island. I have met many kings and great men, but in all my travels, until I reached this cold land, I have never met so disagreeable a person as My goodness gracious met As I write this down I'm almost afraid to think what may happen to Little Jack Rabbit. If it were only the Ice Man I could tell you right away what would happen.

But, wouldd you believe it? The Ice King suddenly turned his scowl into a smile and put out his band. "I admire bravery. I love my brother. King North Wind, because he never gets soft and silly like my younger brother. King South Wind.

And I respect you, Little Jack Aabbit for the way you. stand up for your friends. Here is my hand and I promise you that the crows shall wear their old black coats forever and ever." uring this long speech, the Ice King's breath made the palace so cold that it was necessary to put on twenty more pounds of steam in the boiler, and the Engineer threatened to leave if it happened again, so you see, there are labor troubles even up in the Snowflake Country. Well, after that, Little Jack Rabbit said he must be going, so the Ice King called for a snow white Albatross to carry him back to the South, where the roses were in bloom. "Do you know how to ride a feathered steed asked his Icicle Highness kindly.

"I have ridden with Mother Goose upon her wonderful Gander and on a Cifcus Horse," replied Little Jack Rabbit. "Have no fear for my safety. I am as much at home upon a feather saddle as a leather one," and, jumping nimbly on the back of the Albatross, away he went. "We will take a short cut," said the Big White Bird, flying toward the sea. t.

Pretty soon they passed a high masted ship, and all the sailors waved their caps, but the Albatross never stopped but flew on and on. After a while they saw Neptune in his water car drawn by the Great Sea Horses with their foaming tails. Although Neptune blew his horn times, the Albatross never stopped. By and by a great storm came up and the sea grew mountains high, so the Albatross was forced to fly above the clouds where it was still and quiet. And after a while, Little Jack Rabbit fell asleep and when he awoke, he found himself at the foot of a tall green tree, with a big white feather in his paw.

But the Albatross had flown to the Ice King's Palace.
