Ken Aspromonte, whom Seghi confirmed will return as manager, said, "A coach has to be an instructor. That's the most important factor.

If he cannot communicate with the young players today, he's not going to do a good job as a coach. "Most of the young" players are in the major leagues so soon, too soon in some cases, that this ability to teach is terribly important." Aspromonte said was "very optimistic about this ball club" and was.going to move here from Washington. "We're going to put this ball club back on the map as soon as possible," he said. Meantime, Florida State's young defense was having a better than average night against Wake Forest since the Seminole defenders kept the Deacons from crossslng their goal line. But the Seminole offense lacked inconsistency except for its 71-yard touchdown drive following the second half kickoff. In that lone TD drive quarterback Billy Sexton pitched a pair of passes to Joe Goldsmith, another to Jim Everett setting up Hodges MitcheH's five-yard scoring run.

During the week, Coach Larry Jones has juggled his offense line in hopes of making his running game more effective. He switched strong guard Bob Jones to center, replaced him with sophomore Smokey Ragins and moved 241-pound David Harper into the strong tackle spot. K-State Opens Home Schedule MANHATTAN, Kan. The stage is now set for Saturday's concluding 16 singles and the odds must rest with the United States to retain the trophy. "It is the hardest Rycler Cup CINCINNATI (UPI) Automobiles swerve across an asphalt playing field, bump a four-foot rubber ball and try to put it in the goal controlled by other cars. It's called "autoball" and will be premiered Saturday night at the suburban West Chester Tri- County Speedway. Operator Bill Redwine has turned a 470-by-130 foot asphalt pit area at the track into a playing field. Teams of four men and four cars will play "autoball," the entire Saturday night racing card. "It's not a gimmick," he insists.

"We've been practicing for the past five weeks and if the first game is a success, I'd like to tour with it or franchise it." Each of the four team members will be driving a small foreign car. The goalie can drive in either forward or reverse, but the three other offensive players can drive only forward. The four-foot rubber ball is nearly an inch thick to keep it from breaking. "We've developed some good players in practice," reports Redwine. "Some can bump the ball with their car and make a long shot of 100 feet and others can keep that ball right on the nose of their car and push it into challenge the goalie." And there'll be penalty shots.

"We have two referees to decide who is at fault," said Redwine. "A defensive player is allowed to set a block. If the offensive player drives into a stationary block, then tlie defensive team gets a penalty shot," he explained. "But if the defensive player creeps into the path of an offensive player, that is a moving block and the foul is on the defensive player." Just like in basketball, says Redwine, only a little bit noisier. The 30-foot wide goals, marked off by barrels, are placed 60 feet inside each end of the playing area.

"This way you can drive around the goal and come in and score from behind," explains Redwine. "But the offensive player can only use forward gear, so the goalie has an advantage because he can use both forward and reverse." Redwine says speeds have averaged about 20 miles per hour during practices. "We've found it's best if we keep the cars in low gear, but some drivers can control the' ball at speeds up to 40 miles an hour," he says. "We've only had one accident. The ball lost some air and wouldn't roll too good.

A car went right up on top of it and turned over." Tennis Meet To End Today Finals in the men's division of the Everybody's tennis tournament will be played today at the Mowat (Tenter. Wehn Coach Underwood left McKay Says Tech Tough, ATLANTA (UPI) Cal Coach John McKay has been trying to convince his top- ranked Trojans that the odd- smaker was wrong when he made them 21-point favorites for Saturday's game with Georgia Tech.

"Georgia Tech should be much better than Arkansas (170 loser to Southern Cal)," McKay insists. "Even though they got off to a bad start against South Carolina (which beat Tech 41-28), I would be surprised if they are not one of the better teams in the country by the time the ends." McKay also insists that Atlanta weather may be in Tech's favor. "Sure, it'll be hot," said McKay. "We've undoubtedly some people who are way too fat. We have several players carrying way too much weight (the interior offensive line averages 255 pounds).

Arkansas actually made us look slow." Tech Coach Bill Fulcher counters that McKay is just using psychology. He points out that the Trojans gained more than 450 yards against Arkansas, over 300 on the ground, and, in view of Tech's poor defensive showing against South Carolina, he's worried about stopping Southern Cal's offense. "With people like Anthony Davis, Southern Cal will be out to run the ball down our throats," said Fulcher.
