Tliiivsilay, November 15, Tlic Times Record 27 ourraan outdoors Vikings Headed For Perfection Deer Hunters Ready MONDAY WILL MARK the opening day for gun liunli: ci's in Ihc Southern Zone of New York and prospects are it will be a busy one, I hope most of you have selected your limiting grounds by now but if von liaven'l, possibly I can be of help. (Elsewhere on this pngc is some general information on deer hunting in Region Four, but my observations may lie o( some additional help.) The best prospects 1 have seen in the local area were in the public hunting land in the Helderbcrgs. This land is in the general location of the Town of Knox'off Rt. 156 I was ted through there on Election day for the first time and to tell yon the truth, I was lost. HUT I saw a lol of deer and deer signs there.

Tuesday, the Hcldcrbergs received about 4 inches of snow and by the lime I was walking out of Ihc woods at 4:45 the trails were criss-crossed with hundreds of tracks. Being a public linntins area this spot will re- Wive tremendous pressure from the numbers of hunters (hat will be around. This snoiilu not uiscourage you though as these same people will work to your benefit. Deer have evolved to nocturnal animals and without somebody lo move them they would just lie down in heavy cover and sleep for llic'cbiy. Wherever (here arc hunters the deer will be moving ami a lone hunter, sitlinR, will have as good a chance as anybody.

Columbia and Greene Counties have always been excellent for deer hunting but there is a great deal of posted laud in those counties. Probably Columbia is the most heavily posted but there are two co-operative areas that will produce a lot of deer. The Ancram-Miller- lon Co-operative area along the Dutches: County border and the Chatham-Nassau co-operative along Rt. 22 in North Chatham. IN' KEKSSELAKI! COUNTY there is a co-operative hunting area along Rt.

22, 1.5 miles south of Cherry called Die Capita! District Co-operative. Although 1 have not been burning there this year, people who have, tell me the deer population is excellent. The lloosick Valley area lias as many deer now as anytime in Hie last 5 years. This area is'heavily posted but there are some open spois. Farmers here are issuing permits to friends and people they know.

This weekend may be loo lale lo gel permission. As an idea of what the deer growth in this area is like, the local Conservation officer told me spike burn bucks normally have antlers 2-4 inches long at this point in the season. This year the spikes are 8 lo 10 inches in length. An abundance of good food causes the growth but if we have a hard winter (here will be no food available. Guess what happens then? WHAT ABOUT your hunting techniques or methods? First thing opening day a stand on a well used deer trail will give you a chance al a buck.

After (he early morning hours the bucks are going to be in the heavy cover and tough to move. Move your stand into Ihc middle of this heavy cover and hope fur the bcsl. Don't forget thai deer rely more on llicir nose as a warning device than they do their ears or eyes. So watch how the wind is As I mentioned before, don't be afraid lo hunt where there are a lot of other hunters, arc going to move the deer for you. Always keep an eye out behind your stand as deer arc sly ones and will quietly walk a'rouiul behind, and you would never know.

NEWSPAPERS HAVE ALREADY reported three deaths in the area lo hunters. At least two of these were caused by the incident which is probably stressed lo hunters more than any other. Crossing a fence! I hate lo see this happen to people because it is a senseless way lo die. Car accidents are less preventable then this. The book tells you to unload Ibe gun.

pass it over the fence then over yourself. Most hunters are not going lo unload their guns and we all know it. As an alternative make sure the safely is on, slide the gun under the fence and Mien you can cross. The wearing of fluorrsccnl orange in the wonds is another good idea Ihal I firmly believe in. The red and black checkered coats have poor visibility In fading lighl and arc apl lo make you lurgel for a careless hunter.

1 like to wear a fluorescent vest over my hunting jacket plus a fluorescent orange hat. The colors don't mean anything to a deer and in no way should effect your chances of scoring. But Ihcy may keep you alive. 1 We all know that during the gun season, with liie exception of party permit areas, "bucks only" will prevail. Countless limes have seen deer and could not de- lermine if they were bucks or does and would not shoot.

Bui this is meaningless to a few hunters who figure the best way lo find out Ihe sex of Ihc deer is lo shoot so it won't move anymore. Sometimes identification is not even a matter of finding out if (lie deer is a buck or cloe but if it is even a deer! 1 implore all of you, please verify your target before you shoot. Know if it is a deer first, then if it is a buck. Before you head out into the field Monday pick up your hunting guide that was given out with the bunting license. First check the lime lables for the hour of sunrise and sunset.

You can be in the field before sunrise and after sunset, but the game warden bad better not hear any shooting. Next check lo see what types of firearms are legal in Ihe area you are planning lo hunt. This may seem like a simple thing to mosl hunters but have people with rifles in shotgun only areas. If you are not familiar with these rules study your big game guide very carefully. COOn LUCK TO ALL the hunters out there and if you can't return with a buck on your fender al least come back.

And do everything you can to help the other guy come back! By MATT GRAVES Record Sports Editor Nobody noticed the other night, but the Minnesota Vikings won the NFC Central Division championship. All they 'had lo do was walch the Chicago Bears lose to Kansas City, and the title was theirs. So you might expect Minnesota to begin taking it easy for the rest of Ihe regular season, right? Wrong. The Vikes have somet'hing else to shoot for now an unbeaten season. And if they can get by the Monday, they're very well on (heir way with only four games remaining.

The Falcons can move the ball against most clubs, but few have succeeded against the mighty Minnesota defense. This could be a good one, but the Vikings will roll on lo number 10. Last week we managed to rebound with an tl-2 record, bringing the season showing to 70-40-G for a .636 mark. The picks: Vikings 21, Falcons 14 Minnesota beat' the Rams by one, and the Falcons surging Allanla Falcons beat Ihe Rams by Iwo so Ibis should be a lossup, right? Not qnilc. The Viking defense will remind Atlanta QB Bob Lee why he never did quite make it with Minn a Chuck Foreman may slill be out, but with Bill Brown and Dave Os- borue around, who needs him? Rams 33, 49ers 17 San Francisco is going with Joe Reed at quarterback again, so the Rams should be able to defense bis passing game.

Since there isn't much running there either, it should be a cakewalk for John Hadl and ion Four Prospectus JL Very Good Very Bad Editor's Hole This li Ilit first 1.1 i Ihrcc-parl series by Record Ojldcar Writer Oarrel Roqers en the opening of deer season In Ihe Southern Zone. DARREJj ROGERS Record Outdoor Writer Hunting prospects for Region Four during the season are excellent. As a result of two mild winters and no anllerless deer harvest in much of the region for two years, the deer herd has increased markedly. Buck harvests this year are expected lo be at or above the record harvests of 196ft. The a shown on this page shows the deer hunting prospect in Hegion The lined area is expected to produce a harvest of less than two bucks per square mile of deer range, the lake in this area should be considerably higher than il has been in recent years.

This area carries a smaller deer herd because of more severe limiting factors than legal i The while area has a deer herd which ranges from excellent to overpopulated. The buck take this fall is expected to range from two lo up lo six or more bucks per square mile in the overpopulated areas. The optimum deer herd in the Calskills will provide a lake of two to three bucks per square mile of deer range. The herd is at or above the optimum level throughout most of Ihe white zone at this lime. When the herd becomes larger than the optimum size, a problem develops.

There is not enough food available in most wintering areas a this larger number of animals through severe winter. Parly permits will be used in much of the white area where they are needed to stabilize or, in some cases, reduce the herd. These permits allow hunters lo take antlerless a i a which will starve during a severe winter. The checked areas in a Columbia Counties are exceptions. These are areas where par- ly permits are needed but where none were issued this fall.

Legislation was passed prohibiting the issuance of permits in Ihose counties. Both counties can expect to suffer heavy starvation losses this winter if the weather is at all severe. The wintering areas in i these two counties will be badly damaged by deer and it will lake years for them lo regenerate even after the herd is balanced with the range. The high population of deer in Columbia County has already caused heavy damage to a wide variety of agricultural crops. To sum up the over-all regional deer situation, the hunting prospects are excellent, but a severe winter will be disastrous to deer in overpopulated areas.

company against the suddenly porous SF defense. Dolphins 30, Hills 14 Football fans have been raving about everybody in the NFL except (lie Miami Dolphins. It's what's known as a letdown after last year's perfect season. Well, Miami will probably be in the Super Bowl again, and Buffalo's wild card chances will be seriously thwarted in this one. Raitlcrs Browns 10 Oakland feels (he pressure from Kansas City and must have this one.

The Browns, on the other hand, may be on their way out of Ihe playoff picture for a change. Unless the Browns can get a passing game going, this one looks out of hand. Chargers 20, Saints 17 San Diego is ever going to win another game, il has lo be this week. The Saints had some of Ihe air knocked (heir balloon last week, and may have trouble gelling back up for this Upset Special. Chiefs 28, Oilers 10 Kansas City's defense has been the key to keeping in contention, and Houston doesn't pose much of a throat lo the Chiefs' run for the AFC West title.

The only big one left for KC is on Dec. 8 againsl Oakland. Redskins 35, Colls 15 Washington is in a footrace with Dallas, and a loss for either club will probably be fatal as far as divisional title hopes go. The couldn't stop themselves the past two weeks and sure won't slop this club. Giants 27, Cards 17 To say New York is overdue "is like saying it may snow Ihis winter.

The Cardinals are ripe with a flurry of injuries, so it all adtls lip to a Giant victory. It's about time after losing seven in a row. Packers 21, Patriots 1C Green Bay has to keep tilings rolling after finally getting untracked last week. The Pack has run in streaks since Dan Devine took over, and they may be getting on cgoing now a winning streak, Dial is. Bengals 20, Jcls 16 Joe Namalh's may not he a very happy occasion against the lough defense of the Cincinnati club.

The Bengals have (heir eye on a wild card playoff spot too, and they must stay on (lie track lo have a chance. Jets could upset with a lop effort. Stcclcrs 30, Broncos 17 The Pittsburgh crowd is cheering for home victory number in a row, and the'll probably get it as the club nears the AFC Ea'st crown again. That defense is just loo much for anybody as Oakland discovered last week. Lions 21, Hears 16 These two teams don't have much lo play for, but they'll both be after this one ldcn suit with plenty of vigor.

Chi- cago is at home, but the Bears can't, put points on the board like Detroit has been able to. One break could turn it the other way.
