I have long held this belief and would not shoot a rabbit until snow was on the ground to be absolutely safe. Information provided by the New York Stale Enviormen- lal Conservation Department indicates lliis may no longer be true and they urge you nol to wasle rabbits unnecessarily. Tularcmia can be fatal to humans but the chance of finding a diseased rabbit in New York is rare.

Past cases of infected rabbits occurred in lines thai were imported. It has been 15 years since cottontails were legally imported and released, thus our native stock should now be free of the disease. It is not hard to tell if a rabbit ha 1 a i a They are i i lo chase oul uf cover and when they do run, will stagger, slop or fall down. If you should ever see a rabbit like this, don't touch it. Cover the carcass will) rocks so other animals will not feed on it.

TO HF, CERTAIN un other rabbits, look at the liver. it infected, the liver will be swollen and covered with thousands of small while spots. If there are a few largo while spots, this means the rahbil has dog lape worms. In this case there will also be nlher evidence of dog tapeworms. Small while objects like a grain of rice encased in a clear jelly will be found throughout the body cavity.

The dog tapeworm dues not effect tlie flesh of the rabbit and (lie only precaution to take is lo properly dispose of the innards so your dog cannot eat them and get the tapeworm. If you find a liver with (he small white spots, wash your hands thoroughly and rinse with a disinfectant. Ship the rabbit and liver collect (o the Game Pathologist, Wildlife Research Laboratory, Dclinur, N.Y. There are a couple -of other ailments that may be present in rabbits and in' no way effect, the eating quality of the meat. One of these is the larva of Hie rabbit botfly which appears as a large inch long larva under the skin in the neck or groin region.

These do not appear later in the season as the grub leaves Hie rabbit to take another form. Even if the flesh around Ihe grub is red and inflamed it will have no effect on the edibility of Ihe flesh. THE OTHER A1LHKNT thai you may see is a soft, wartlike growth usually found around the face or feet. This is a growth on Iho skin and when the skin is removed so is the grjwlh. This is called Shope's Fibroma and will have no effect on tlic rabbits eating a i The big problem with rabbits at this lime, is getting any.

1 have been out hi flic field many times this season and have yet to see a rabbit. THK cover is so thick and heavy all that you can catch is a movement of grass as he runs off. There are a lot of rabbits around though and you dedicated bunny baggers should have a good year. don't normally hunt for rabbits unfit January or so and then only with somebody whom 1 know will cut (hem. My taste buds have never agreed with rabbit, cither wild or domestic.

Maybe it was only in the preparation as I know many people who love rabbit on their dinner plates. If you have any good recipes for preparing rabbit or tips to be used in cooking, drop me a line care of the newspaper. I might be able lo devote a future column to the cooking xnd enjoyment of rahuils.
