F. DOUGINAS War Veteran, 86, Slash Quan-1 trel Gang: Survivor 78, In Fight With Knife. JEFFERSON CITY, Jan. 12. (By the Associated Press.) A story of two old confederate soldiers, one 86 years old and the other 78, who engaged in a knife battle at the confederate soldiers' home at Higgins iJle, this week, over a stolen cuspidor, Was related here today by Dr.

W. A. erter, house physician of hc institution. Jim Cummings, age 78, reputed the last survivor of the famous Quantrel band, was slash ed by Hose Scott, aged s6, an old soldier of the Civil war whose home is near Salem. Dent county, according to Dr.

Porter. Cummings is in the hospital, seriously but not fatally wounded and Scott has been sent to the state hospital No. 1 at Fulton until the feud has subsided, the doctor said. The story as related by Dr. Porter here today follows: Old Mose ani Cummings-, the latter the last survivor'of the historical Quantrel gang whoafter the Civil war, was an intimate acquaintance of the notorious James boys, the Youn ers and the Coles, pioneer outlaws of the Ozarks, dwelt in peace' in their declining days in the Confederate Soldiers home at Higginsvillc.

Then one day Hoses cuspidor disappeared. He accused old Jim who in the heat of the moment exclaimed: Youre a liar Mose, his ire aroused, whipped out his knife and began slashing Old Jim fell, with a bad cut in his left cheek and another on his abdomen.
