The Apaches, aided by a 31-yard Ducksworth-to-Hill hookup and a 25-yard completion from Chism to Oliver, had a golden chance in the waning minutes of the half, but again came away empty. Ducksworth, who gained 68 yards in the half, dropped a' screen pass on fourth-and goal from the 4 on the last play of the half. Chism began heating up in the third quarter and led a Tyler drive with cpmpletions of 18, 16, 14 and 12 yards, but a fourth-and-11 screen pass from the NEO 13 gained only 5 yards.

By BRIAN MARSHALL SUff Writer MIAMI, Okla. Proving there's strength in numbers, Northeastern Oklahoma wore down the Tyler Junior College Apaches, 24-7, Saturday at Robertson Field. NEO, which carries 55 players, broke a 16-7 game open in the fourth quarter as the Apaches, with at least four of their 33 players injured, became fatigued. "I won't ever volunteer to play them again unless we get the numbers," said TJC head coach Charlie McGinty. "The kids played their hearts out, but the numbers beat us.

We're awful beat up." Among the ailing for-TJC was tailback Ronnie Ducks-worth, who re-injured a hamstring pull in the third quarter. Ducksworth gained 104 yards on 15 'carries while healthy and also tossed a 31-yard pass to Henry Hill-Missed scoring opportun-ites also beat the Tribe. TJC got to within the NEO 5-yard line twice without scoring and stalled, at the NEO 13 another time. "No doubt about it when you get in there and don't score, it really hurts you," admitted McGinty, whose Apaches fall to 0-2, while NEO, which has now won 28 straight games at home, improves to 2-0. Both teams scored on exciting plays in the first half, but a crucial TJC turnover and missed opportunities by the Apaches allowed NEO to take a 16-7 lead at halftime.

The Norsemen got on the board on their second series. Tailback Robert Parker wouldn't be denied on a sweep, breaking tackle after tackle en route to a 50-yard TD burst. The Norsemen got to the 21 and Davy boomed a 37-yard field goal to give Northeast a 10-0 edge with 3:49 to play in the first quarter. TJC head coach Charlie McGinty inserted Ducks-worth who didn't start be-cause of his injury and the TJC offense began to roll.

On his first carry, Ducks-worth broke three tackles and picked up 22 yards to the TJC 42. On a third-and-16, the 230-pounder bulled head first for 18 tough yards. On the next play, quarterback Brent Chism hit receiver Hill on a run over the middle and Hill raced untouched to paydirt. Chism booted the PAT to cut NEO's lead to 10-7 with' 2:12 left in the opening quarter. Cornerback Greg Dunn picked off an NEO pass and returned it 9 yards to the NEO 41 early in the second stanza, but the Tribe couldn't capitalize.

TJC held off a long NEO drive and stopped the enemy at the 1-yard line, but Chism was intercepted by Kenny Benson moments later at the 18. The Norsemen wasted no time as Parker vaulted into fourth quarter. The Aggies evened their record at 1-1 while Arkansas State of the Southland Conference dropped its first game in three decisions. The heavily favored Aggies led only 13-0 at halftime with the aid of a 32-yard touchdown pass from quarterback John Mazur to Jimmie Williams and Smith's two field goals. But Cannon applied the game breaker in the third quarter.

He fielded the punt, cut across the field and stiff-armed an Indian at the 20-yard-line for first punt return for a touchdown since Carl Roaches performed the feat in 1973. in the second quarter. The Lobos crossed midfield once in the first half but that drive ended after defensive end Robert Brannon grabbed the ankles of quarterback Buddy Funck for a 10-yard loss and the Lobos followed with a holding penalty. On that possession, New Mexico made five of its seven first-half first downs. After Foreman's touchdown, New Mexico reached the Arkansas 26 mostly on two scrambles for 37 yards by Funck.

On third-and-14, Funck threw deep down the middle and Charles Washington intercepted in the end zone. On the first play of the fourth quarter, Funck found Mike Mazella behind the linebackers for 30 yards and a first down on the Arkansas second touchdown run, a 22-yard interception return for a score by Orsby Crenshaw and a 12-yard scoring jaunt by Donald Jordan, who rushed for 203 yards in 31 carries. Houston also got a 1-yard scoring run by Dwyane Love, who added 116 yards rushing on 21 carries. Lamar, which never has defeated Houston in three tries, had a 14-0 lead in the second quarter on touchdown and pulled to a 21-21 deadlock after three quarters when Campbell connected with tight end Hester Little for an 8-yard score. Campbell added a 46-yard scoring plass play to Howard Easley with 9:14 left and a 52-yard bomb to split end Mitchell Bennett with 1:36 left to Stubborn Tigers to a 24-10 college foot-ballvictory Saturday night.

From Page 1, Sec. 3 hours in transit to some games Friday night and about five hours at the game itself Throw in a few junior high games on Thursday and it's easy to see how being an official demands a lot of time. And for those who think being a football official is strictly a September to December job, forget it. "We started sending out schedules in January and we got the schedules back from the coaches in February or March.

In June or July we attend seminars, then the state then district meetings and then scrimmages," noted Mol-loy. "My job is really the year around." IN ADDITION, there are the tests to make sure each ref is up on the latest rule changes. And don't forget those annual dues. Becoming an official is not free. And speaking of rule changes, there are several this year of particular note.

Most of the 51 changes in 1983 are administrative but here are a few that might keep some fan from claiming the ref blew a call: The kicking team has to give the punt receiver at least two yards clearance when the ball is on its downward flight. Failure to do so is interference with the opportunity to catch the ball. The offensive team per se cannot be offsides. It is now encroachment. When the center touches the ball, no offensive player can enter the neutral zone.

If he does, it's a dead-ball foul. A defensive player, however, can enter the neutral zone and return to his original position if the ball has not been centered or he has not been touched. There are now two penalties for roughing the punter. Running into the punter is a five-yard penalty from where the ball was snapped while roughing the kicker is a 15-yard penalty and first down. If the punter fakes a roughing call, the punting team can be assessed a 15-yard penalty.

ANY PENALTY from a scrimmage play which results in a touchdown against the defensive team is carried over to the kickoff On a roughing the passer call, if the ball was complete, penalty yardage is no longer added on to the play. The offensive team can either take the play or penalty, it can't get both. LITTLE ROCK (AP) -Quarterback Brad Taylor scored one touchdown and set up another as Arkansas struggled past New Mexico 17-0 Saturday night. The shutout ended New Mexico's 108-game scoring streak that dated to 1973. Taylor's 1-yard sneak gave the Razorbacks a 10-0 lead in the second quarter.

His 39-yard pass completion to Keith Kidd carried to the 1 and led to a 1-yard scoring run by Marshall Foreman that made it 17-0 midway through the third quarter. The Razorbacks wasted two first half opportunities when Greg Home missed a 26-yard field goal after a fumble recovery at the New Mexico 16. Foreman fumbled at the New Mexico 15 after the Razorbacks moved 50 yards INDIVIDUAL STATISTICS RUSHING Baylor, Anderson 1042, Rice 0-20. Stockemer 0-22. UTEP, Jackson 743.
