17-- Conversation 1968. Jack Benny, the famous comedian, will reminisce about his career in show business, his vaudeville days, and his early violin lessons. A millionaire, the 74-year-old Benny continues to work, saying he likes it and considers himself a young man because age is "only a state of mind." ler is the only complete theater in the country that devotes itself entirely to the discovery development and display of the budding talent in young teenagers and children. Singer-actor Frankie Avalon, who now is one of the country's top stars earning about $18,000 a week, chuckled as he recalled when he got his start in Grant's productions for several summers. "It's amazing the experience it gives you," he said.

"He taught me how to bow, how to get on stage and how to wait for the applause." Connie Francis, Peggy March and Ronnie Fields, who won an award last year for doing the choreography for "Cabaret" also got their starts in the steel Pier Children's Theater. Grant travels all over the country auditioning acts to appear on the Pier. Last winter, from November to May, Grant reviewed nearly 5,000 acts throughout the country. He selected 240 acts for the 10-week season--24 acts are used every week. The show is entirely new each week.

There are four shows a day comprised of 12 acts. And every act has a backup act. Grant says that the total number of performers in his acts adds up to about 150 youngsters weekly. "I try to get the most outstanding amateur talent in the country," he said. Pier owner George A.

Hamid says there are always some tal ent scouts in the audience. Young performers often are picked up for commercials, television spots arid other engagements. Perhaps that's one of the reasons why young performers and their families try so hard to showcase their talents at the Childrens Theater. They arc willing to go to the expense of traveling great distances and paying for their own accommodations at the resort In hopes that an appearance at the Children's Theater will start them on the road to stardom.
