Conviction of capital murder carries a mandatory Sentence of either life in prison or death by lethal injection.

However, state law requires that a capital murder, conviction cannot rest on a guilty plea alone, but must include corroborating testimony. "The statutes are vague concerning capital murder," said Berchelmann. "He has entered his plea of guilty, but we are still in the guilt or innocence phase," "Berchelmann and Torres said they could recall no other case in which a defendant in Texas has pleaded guilty to capital murder, a charge established by the Legislature in 1973. "Our goal is to show that the man is repentant and that he shouldn't get the death penalty," Torres said. "If a man feels like he is repentant, then he's going to express his repentance by saying he's guilty." "We want to show God and society that we are sincere in BEAUMONT.

Texas (AP) Stephan Peter Morin, charged with five slayings in three states, pleaded guilty Tuesday to capital murder in the shooting death of "a 21-year-old woman at a San Antonio parking lot. "I've made peace with my God," Morin responded when state District Judge Judge David Berchelmann Jr. asked if he entered the plea voluntarily and with no delusive hope of pardon or parole. Morin's attorney, Peter Torres, said Morin had become a Christian, was sorry and would ask the mercy of the court during the punishment phase of the trial. in oan Antonio, Morin also is accused of shooting Miss Scott's friend, Dru aides, 25, at the same time Miss Scott was shot to death.

(AP) A guidance counselor who worked with the student charged with murdering a Garland County Community, College instructor and another student said Tuesday that Kelvin Love was a smart but bitter young man. Love, 26, was in Garland County Jail without bond Tuesday on two counts of capital felony murder and one count of kidnapping.

Authorities arrested Love on Monday after a 25-mile car chase that began in the Mena city limits, 77 miles west of Hot Springs. Love is charged with killing instructor William Buddy Putman, 39, of Hot Springs and student Donald Edward Schamp, 34, of Hot Springs as about 12 data processing students looked on. He is also charged with taking hostage another student, Carrie Lynne Loy, 19, of Hot Springs, who was freed unharmed after police shot the radiator of the car in which Love was riding. Police said Love fired at them during the chase. The shooting at the school erupted after Love became angry with Putnam about an assignment that was either lost or not submitted, witnesses said.

In a telephone interview, college counselor Ron Chesser said Love made A's and B's but had attended the college four years full time. Most students finish a com- POOL- SWIMMING munity college program in two years. "He never had any direction," Chesser said. "At one time he wanted to go into electronics, and a year and a half ago he decided he would go into computer programming. He could have done it; he could have made it." Chesser described Love as a loner.

Chesser didn't know why Love was bitter and said the student probably didn't know "He was a'rebel maybe without a cause." Love wore a backpack in which he often carried an extra pair of shoes and slept outside, even though his family had a nice home in Hot Springs, Chesser said. "I know it upset them that he didn't live with them," Chesser said. "He was very different," Chesser said. Love couldn't drive and must have forced Miss Loy to drive the getaway car, Chesser said. She couldn't be contacted Tuesday.

"He walked 10 miles a day back and forth to school," Chesser said The counselor said Love drew financial aid to attend school and worked part time in a work-study program. Chesser didn't know why Love went to college so long unless "He was just kind of hanging onto something." Chesser said Love never complained to him. The counselor said he understood Love had been involved in fights at the school until the past year. "He never won one. He would just talk and stand.

It seemed like he had to prove something to everybody." "We're in for some sort of cold shock of higher prices and decreased supply once again," C.J. Silas told engineers at the Annual Joint Enhanced Oil Recovery Symposium, which opened Monday. "The American people must look beyond the short-term low prices and the over-supply of oil to the long term." he said. "We have to have an understanding that the energy problems are still going to exist in the next decade. Silas stressed the importance to the United States of developing new technologies for extracting crude oil from the ground.

Opinion in the oil industry on whether the current glut of oil will persist is sharply divided. Some believe changes in energy-use patterns as a result of the oil-price shocks of the 1970s are permanent and will prevent any strong recovery in oil demand during the 1980s. Others say recession in the United States and in other industrialized countries is the major cause of low demand, and that once economic recovery takes hold, demand for oil products will spurt. The result, they argue, will be tighter supplies and higher prices. TYLER BANK'S IRA, A TAX BREAK FOR YOU.
