Lgt LAS VEGAS, Nev. (AP) Marvelous Marvin Hagler vs. Thomas "Hit Man" Hearns it's a match of hype and of high hopes for the two combatants. "This is going to be the highlight of Marvin Hagler's career," said co-manager Pat Petronelli of Hagler's scheduled 12-round defense of the undisputed middleweight championship Monday night. "This is the fight he wanted," "I think the whole world as taken notice of this fight," said Hagler.

"That's what I want. When I knock out Thomas Hearns, the world will take notice. "Leonard took his confidence away for a year," Hagler said, referring to Sugar Ray Leonard's 14- round defeat of Hearns for the undisputed welterweight title here Sept. 16,1981. "He'll never get it back when I knock him out." "I plan to show greatness," said Hearns, the World Boxing Council super welterweight champion.

"That's what's planned greatness. "Leonard did a great deal for me. It made me want to get in there and prove myself. "I don't see this fight going the distance. I think it will be over in three rounds.

I have the ability to make these things happen." "It's an interesting fight," Leonard said of the match set for a sold- out outdoor stadium at Caesars Palace. It also could be the richest match ever. Hagler is guaranteed $5.6 million, and Hearns is guaranteed $5.4 million. "The money is nice, but I'm not thinking about it right now," Hagler said. "I'll think about it later." The match brings together two men with excellent records, impressive numbers of knockouts, and the kind of boxing skills than can enable them to win on points. Hagler, whose listed age is 30, but who could be older, has a 60-2-2 record, with 50 knockouts. It will be his llth title defense, and his goal is to break Carlos Monzon's record of 14 successful middleweight title defenses.

Hearns, 26, has a 40-1 record, with 34 knockuts. A win would make him a triple champion and would be an important step toward his goal of becoming the first man to win four titles by gaining the light heavyweight championship. The fight is a promoter's dream. "The biggest advocates for the fight are the press guys," said Arum. "I don't have to sell this as a competitive match.

Other people are selling it. I can try to make it an event." When the match was first made, Arum said it was fight that didn't need to be hyped. He then took Hagler and Hearns on a promotional tour of 21 U.S. cities. A barometer of the competitiveness of the fight is the wagering on it.

Sparring partner predicts early KO for Hagler LONDON (AP) Buster Drayton, who used to spar with Marvelous Marvin Hagler, predicts a quick finish Monday night when Hagler defends his middleweight title against Thomas Hearns. "I have a premonitipn, a first- round knockout by Hagler," said Drayton, who is in London for his own middleweight bout Sunday night against fellow American James Kinchen. "And don't you say I'm biased. I've watched Hearns' workouts. He's good but he's gonna get caught." Drayton, ranked No.

4 in the World Boxing Council light middleweight division, recently has been fighting as a middleweight. "Hearns' attitute will get him knocked out," Drayton said. "He'll come out trying to prove a point but he's gonna feel the pace in this trip. When Hagler catches you, it feels like paralysis. He notices that quickly, and goes in for the kill.

"It is true that Hagler has more problems with short guys. Hearns is tall with a long reach and that will suit Hagler perfectly," he said. Meanwhile, Drayton was making final preparations for his fight with Kinchen, the World Boxing Council's third-ranked middleweight. Send your news tip to The Salina Journal; up to $45 in cash weekly. Sonny Reizner, who operates the sports book at the Castaways, said it will be most legally bet fight in history.

He said more than $10 million will be bet, topping the about $10 million wagered on the Leonard-Hearns fight. The odds are very close, but Hearns had a slight edge, which could shift at any time. "I hope they have him 10-1, so when I knock his shoes off, they'll know about it," Hagler said. Should Hearns win, he would become the fourth man since 1951 to make a successful championship advance from 147-pound welterweight division to the 160-pound middleweight class. Sugar Ray Robinson, a great welterweight champion, won the middleweight title when he stopped Jake LaMotta in the 13th round Feb.

14, 1951. Carmen Basilio moved up successfully when he won a 15-round split decision over Robinson Sept. 23, 1957, and Emile Griffith did it when he scored a 15-round unanimous decision over Dick Tiger April 25,1966. Two who failed were Jose Napoles, who was stopped by Monzon in the seventh round Feb. 9, 1974, and Roberto Duran, who lost a 15- round unanimous decision to Hagler Nov.

10,1983. Hagler won the middleweight title when he stopped Alan Minter in three rounds Sept. 27, 1980. He had failed in an early bid when a bout with Vito Antuofermo ended in a 15- round draw. Hearns won the World Boxing Association title on a second-round knockout of of Pipino Cuevas on Aug.

2,1980. He won the super welterweight title (154 limit) on a 15-round decision over Wilfred Benitez Dec. 3, 1982. He has defended it three times since then including a knockout of Duran last June 15. 1 1 Miles North on 81 827-5686 AUCTION 6 DAY SALEI TWO 3 DAY SELLING SESSIONS! $572,000.00 INVENTORY Of PLUMBING.
