There is a well grounded suspicion in the mind that the real reason for Wishing Mr McClelland out of the way has not been made public and it is hoped that the courts which will be invoked to determine Mr McClelland rights in this matter will develop the facts Until Mr McClelland in the exercise of an en lightened judgment and in obedience to his oath of office and the trust reposed in him found it necessary to object to some of Dr methods and to oppose the granting of a seven months' exten sion of the term of office at a salary of $500 per moBth McClelland! right to officiate as a member of the state board of agriculture had never been questioned He had attended the meetings of the board regularly ever since his appointment bad served as chairman of some of its most Important committees and as a member of several other board committees had been entrusted with the performance of important duties by special commission had been regularly paid the per diem and ex penses fixed by law for such services the same as other members of the board and had been recognized by his associates as a rightful member of the board in all respects If he had been willing to stifle his convictions and shown a disposition to bend the pregnant hinges of the knee and bow down in taeek submission to Dr imperious will does any one believe that he would have been disturbed? It is true the law says that the board may fill vacancies in its body oqcurring through the death resignation or removal from the state of any of its mem bers but it does not appear of record any where that a vacancy existed in the board by reason of either of the causes mentioned and the presumption is therefore that Gov Waite had the right to appoint Mr McClelland At any rate the fact that he had been recognized as a member of the board for a period exceeding three years and had acted as such without protest or question amounts practically to an acknowledgment of a waiver of whatever right the board had to appoint in bis case A democratic county convention has been called to meet in For Collins on Saturday August 15 for the purpose of electin twenty delegates to represent the free silver sentiment of Larimer county in a democratic state convention which will be held on the 19 inst at Pueblo Tbe call is broad in terms and should be liberally construed It invites all who are in representative citizens will be chosen in every precinct in the county to attend the county convention The free and unlimited coinage of both silver and gold at a ratio of 16 to 1 is conceded to be in Colorado the paramount issue in the- present campaign All other national questions upon which people ordinarily differ in a presidential campaign have been subordinated in this state to that one issue and on that line fully 90 per cent of the people of Colorado propose to contest for the mastery But to win the victory they must march together in solid phalanx and follow the banner of one trusted standard bearer Much is expected of Colorado in this campaign and the friends of free silver other states must not be disappointed Let the friends of Bryan and Sewall and free silver in Larimer county Colo- July 29 1896 DEMOCRATIC NATIONAL TICKET For President WILLIAM JENNINGS BRYAN of Nebraska For Vice President ARTHUR SEWALL of Maine Bryan can easily lose a million gold bug votes and then beat McKinley hands down So fab as we can learn every populist paper in Colorado is ardently supporting Bryan and Sewall cuckoos will get together in Indianapols tomorrow and anxiously inquire one of have use for a headstone cuckoos are flocking by themselves do less mischief that way and may be the means of electing Bryan A cuckoo vote saved from McKinley is half a vote for Bryan The democrats and populists of Nebraska will unite upon a fusion ticket The democrats in return for populist support of the Bryan and Sewall electors will throw their strength to the populist state ticket Senator Ed English cous in crawled out of his hole last Friday gave a yawp for McKinley boarded an east bound train and skipped for more congenial company Let him go never be missed Leading eastern republican it will be no play to defeat this powerful alliance of silver democrat and populists Bryan can lose a million democratic votes and makegood the lose from among his populist The Detroit Free Press says that Pin free silver leanings have made him an unexpectedly strong candidate for governor and that is the observation of intelligent travelers that Michigan is more thoroughly possessed of the free silver delusion than any state that is usually relied upon for a republican Madison Square Garden New York is the place and August 12 is the date fixed for giving Bryan official notice of his nomination for preeident of the United States The New Yorkers will no doubt hear something to their advantage when Mr Bryan delivers his speech of acceptance He will tell them truths that will send them home scratching their heads Our populist friends cared more for their organization than for their country From th present outlook we predict that they will have the organization left after November 3 but no party The free coinage pops like the free coinage republicans will vote where their votes will count and Tom Watson will have to answer his own world-famous question: are we Eaton Herald When silver is coined free in America England ill hare to pay instead of 66 o-nts an ounce $123 an ounce and instead of having that silver go to India and China and Japan to purchase wheat and cotton for the English market it will go into American channels of business having been coined in American mints and American ulieat and cotton will go to England and be sold fir English gold Cleveland Plaindealer The election in Alabama on Monday of the democratic state ticket by largely increased majorities is an emphatic reminder of the fact that the people of the south- are loyal to democracy and free silver Johnson the democratic nominee for governor a pronounced free silver man was -elected by nearly 50000 majority over the populist and republican fusion candidate Two yeare ago the state went democratic by 27000 majority The south is all right for silver Fifty years of uninterrupted publication aud a wide circulation among the American people have rendered the Scientific A merioan of New York household term Thq editors have issued a handsome anniversary number which reviews the progress of the arts and sciences during the past half century end is enriched with copious illustrations showing the development of the steamship the railroad the teiegrsph and the telephone printing the bicycle and the reaper and it includes sketches and portraits of celebrated inventions and men of science and the full text of the prize essay on the of Price 10 cents per copy The action of the state board rf agriculture in the unseating of Mr McClelland has an ugly look and its legal! ty should be tested in the courts The fact that the board which had barely a quorum present would not await the arrival of the governor and of Mr Emigb who were coming on the first train shows that there was a job of some kind put Up and that it was hurried through It will become the dut-' of the next general assembly to make a searching investigation into the affairs of the board even it the courts do not shake it up in the meantime Personal prejudice and politics which appear to be prominent in this affair have no place in a board which controls a great educational insti Denver News The McKinley-Woloott goldbug republicans of Colorado have shown their hand at last By meanB of proxies obtained through false pretenses they succeeded last Wednesday in getting control of the republican state central committee and adopting resolutions pledging the support of the party in this state to McKlnlsy and a continuance of the existing gold standard thus turning their backs upon Teller and silver The resolutions were adopted after a bitter fight in the committee by a vote of 48 to 33 Chairman Irving Howbert resigned and the notorious Hodges of slate roof fame was chosen in hie place to lead the McKinleyites out of the wildernese After fixing the date for holding a state convention on September 30 and giving it out cold that only those republicans who will pledge their support to the na tional republican ticket would be permitted to take part in its proceedings the committee adjourned in confusion The silver members of the committee are in a great quandary to know what course to take and are all at sea One thing however is evident They propose to fight the Wolcott-IIodges combine to the bitter end Silver Sentiment in Ohio A prominent YouDgetown Ohio attorney closes a business letter to a correspondent in this county with the following encouraging comment on the political situation in that state and in Pennsylvania He says: As to politics although this is io old district and where ho has a great many friends there are a great many republicans here who will vote for silver this fall and in the western part part of tbe state there is a wonderful silver sentiment especially about- Mansfield Senator home where traveling men say nearly every man they meet is for silver I was recently over in Pennsylvania and without saying anything myself tried to find out there and every third republican expressed himself in favor of silver this year and would so vote although some of them were old soldiers in Senator regiment think that if 'he right thing is done at St Louis to day that Mr Bryan will be the next preeident in spi of anything that can be done and that while McKin ley is really favorable to silver himself the parties who have obtained control of him oan and will dictate bia course and the platform and vioe-presidential Dem inee Hobart are as bad aa they possibly oan be Hobart never did anything except wreck railroads and is a director in and attorney for aod got up the traffic trust of trunk lines to keep up freight between Chicago and New York and this of itself will drive thousands from the ticket Hoping to hear from you soon I remain yours very truly Clark The St Louis convention will cause tbe populists to blush for shame it the work done succeeds in defeating the free coinage of silver and such bids fair to be the case There cannot be tbe slightest doubt that populist agitation is what drove the Chicago convention onto such a splendid reform platform and now if the populists break faith and refuse to grasp tbe opportunity to deal a death blow to the money power while it is in their reach they will be responsible for the defeat of the measures which they advocate We as a populist have always believed that prejudice and offensive partisanship were all that prevented many needed reforms and now it eras that tbe reform party chooses rather to defeat the greatest principle for which it was organized than to en-ger the party organization Ber-thoud Bulletin Colorado populists are all in favor of the election of Bryan and Sewall The Boulder Camera one of tbe leading and most influential peoples party papers in the state sounds the key note of the situation in the following paragraph: Tom Watson says Sewall ought to resign We feel sure that Watson ought to do the same thing and give Mr Sewell his earnest support The Maine man was nominated first and by a party that has three times the vote of the peoples party If Watson accepts as he says be will and bis candidacy defeats the popular will by a miscarriage in the electoral college Watson and the middle-of-the-road populists will be responsible for tbe greatest crime of tbe century Sewall well resign as tnere is no one authorized to fill the vacancy G0T
