THE TIMIS RECORD, TROY, N. WEDNESDAY EVENING, SEPTEMBER 8, 1965 25 Jets Ask Waivers On Huarte As Grid Clubs Squads Detroit Releases Lane; Steelers Drop Peaks By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS John Huirtt, 19M Heismin Trophy win. as top college football player of the year and one of the highest-priced rookies in pro iporti history, was dropped by the New York Jets yesterday as American Football League teams made their final rost- cuts. The quarterback from Notre Dame, who signed for an esti mated $200,000, was put on waivers with five other Jets. Among other AFL cuts were quarterback Jacky Lee, by Deiv ver, and tackle Jim Davidson, Buffalo's top draft choice.

AFL clubs had to get down to the 38-man limit for the regular season, opening this week. Teams in the National Football League also cut their squads to 43 and must trim to 40 next Tuesday for the season's opening Sept. 19. Night Train Lane of Detroit, a pro defensive back for 13 years was a prominent NFL roster casualty, along with fullback Clarence Peaks of Pittsburgh. Huarte, who fired Notre Dame to a high national ranking last year, was named Most Val- uabl- Player for the College All- Stars against the Cleveland Browns last month in Chicago.

But because of his involvement with the All-Star game, he reported late to the Jets' camp and never caught up. He finished well behind second-year man Mike and another big bonus rookie, Joe Namath, in the race for the quarterback job. Dropped Put on waivers with Huarle were Bob ikert, star back frv. Virginia Tech who also picked up a sizeable bonus to sign; Gordy Holz, starting defensive tackle for the Jets last year; center John Schmitt, de- According to league rules, the Jets can change signals on Huarte. Other AFL clubs have 24 hours to claim him, for the waiver price of $100, and if he is claimed, the Jets have the option of taking him off the waiver list and restoring him to their roster.

Should the other teams pass Huarte in the 24-hour period, the Jets then have 24 more hours to put him on their taxi, or reserve, squad. If they let him go completely which is highly unlikely he becomes a free agent. It has never been established how much Huarte received for signing with the Jets or how the sum was split in bonus money, salary and fringe benefits. Thus it is a question as to how expensive it would be for another team to take over his contract. AdiosVic Nips Bret For Victory INDIANAPOLIS, Ind.
