contact between coaches and quarterbacks gets down to the fourth week of play Sunday with the undefeated Chicago Cardinals end the Detroit Lions still riding high in the Eastern and Western Conferences Six games are on tap as the loop plays a full Sabbath schedule of the second week in a row and1 On the very next play Dunn a little squirt who only tips in at 145 pounds rolled out spied Bobby Burford in the clear and hit him with a beautiful pass on the 10 Burford skipped into the end zone unmolested An exchange of kicks set the stage for thundering drive to the one foot line where a magnificent Florida line held as the seconds were ticking away Prominent in surge that started on the Commodore 25 were King Jimmy Ray Smith and Jack Hudson The key play was registered when King made a great catch of a Smith heave at the Florida 35 Playing guts ball Smith then lateralled to Ray who went 13 yards to the Florida 22 Then Smith passed to Hudson for 16 yards and a first down on the six DRIVE FOULS UP Here things fouled up for the Commodores Smith lateralled to Hudson jfor a yard loss before King smashed for a couple to the five Smith looking for a receiver was smeared for another yard loss Then King proving the splendid competitor that he is as he ran over the whole left side of the Gator line finally being brought to a struggling halt with his head in the end zone and the ball nestled to his belly on the one foot line Florida took over and after three sneaks kicked out of danger Vandy completed a pass as time ran out So the score remained Florida 7 Vand 0 at half time The Gators continued to dominate play in the third quarter captalizing on another Vandy goof to set up a touchdown that came midway in the period After an exchange of kicks Spears toed one beautifully out of bounds on the 27 On first play of scrimmage Danny McCall fumbled and Florida tackle Charlie Mitchell recovered on the 26 CALLS GREAT GAME Spears calling an outstanding game mixed up his selections as he directed the Gators to the touchdown First he passed to Roberts for three yards Another play failed to produce On a trick play Parrish overshot his man in the end zone Spears desperate here spotted Symank on the 16 where he hit him perfectly for a first down Symank as a reward for his good work was sent to the 10 Parrish got into the act with six more to the four Fullback Sears bulled for two and Symank nudged It to the goal Spears then leaped over his center for the touchdown He added the point Vandy started its solitary touchdown 'drive late in the third period commencing the drive on its own 30 With King and sophomore Dick Butler doing the share of the work the Commodores moved into the end zone in 19 plays Butler scored hurdling the stack on fourth down from the one foot line During the march King turned in a beautiful 16 yard run and donated three four-yard shots at vital times during the drive Butler ran it the last four times from the five yard line Six minutes and 29 seconds had elapsed in the fourth period when the Commodores registered Travis booted the extra point Florida came right back to ice the game Spears took the kickoff on the 15 and moved it back to the 29 Symank ran it 29 yards to the Vandy 41 on the next play Parrish and Symank were held to four yards on two line plays before Parrish skipped 19 to the 19 Spears went for five and followed up with a lightning shot off left tackle for 14 yards and the touchdown Florida missed another chance to score shortly afterwards when Mitchell recovered his second fumble in Vandy territory This time he surrounded the ball on the 46 With subs in the game the Gators moved it to the 30 before relinquishing it to the Commodores with only a couple of minutes left Vandy tried a couple of half-hearted trick plays but they knew for today anyway that they had met their masters and retired meekly to their dressing quarters where they licked their awful wounds FLORIDA Left big Joe Brod'ky so violently tried to block Boyce kick that the sophomore quarterback booted for only eight yards The Gators registered on the next play when Dunn hurled to end Bobby Bur-ford The play covered 34 yards Spears scored the second Florida touchdown midway in the third period slipping across from the one culminating a 26-yard march The third Florida touchdown came late in the fourth period after Florida had narrowed the score to 14-7 with a touchdown six minutes after the quarter had started Fullback Ed Sears scored it from 14 yards out touchdown was registered by sophomore Dick Butler from four yards out culminating a 70-yard march Even in defeat King was Isimply great for Vandy The strapplmg halfback ran with great enthusiasm each time he handled the ball and made a great catch of a ball during a drive that ended on the one-fobt line late in the second quarter DEFENSIVE 'STANDOUTS Defensive standouts for Florida were Bill Bolton John Barrow and Dan Pelham defensive stickouts were Art Dem-mas Lucian Tafum George Deiderich and Henry Tyler Sparring cautiously neither of the highly keyed teams mustered up much of an offensive threat during the first quarter Vandy in fact chalk up a first down in the first 15 min- utes of play Fierce tackling by the Gators kept the great King in check and it looked for a while to the 24000 homecoming fans that their big splendid horse would be contained all day But that of course was before those last thundering minutes of the second quarter when Vandy was trying to even it up before rest time SET UP SCORE Florida penetrated to the Vandy 31 yard line late in the opening period setting the stage for the touchdown that came in the first two minutes of the sec- ond period After Spears had kicked out on the Vandy 26 on the first play of the period the Commodores put together a small march that saw them register their initial first down As a matter of fact the Commodores rolled for a couple of first downs before the roof fell in That naturally was when Smith trying to jerk up the slack left by the injured Don Orr booted one off the side of his foot that went out of bounds on the Vandy 33 He was rushed vigorously by big Joe Brodsky and was lucky in retrospect to the Cardinals and the Lions will be seeking their fourth consecutive victories Chicago meets the Eagles in Philadelphia with first place in the Eastern Conference at stake while the San Francisco 49ers move into Detroit to try and slow down the Lions In other games the Baltimore Colts meet the Bears in Chicago the Cleveland Browns play the Redskins varied success in earlier contests Philadelphia is tied with New York for second place in the Eastern Conference each with two vie-tories and one defeat The Eagles and the Cardinals are as far as oddsmakers are concerned for their battle at Philadelphia With Ollie Matson traveling 105 yLds for a touchdown on a kick Announcement of plans for the bowl was made by Don Akard South Knoxville Yankee Stadium Last week Alex Webster scored all three Giant touchdowns as Cleveland dropped its second game Iraq has boosted some vehicle registration fees to discourage use of heavy trucks backer Bolton made a lot of tackles Sears ran the ball awfully well Coach Woodruff's statement: a team has played the way Florida did today hard just now to single out any one player They all did a good job In the 4th quarter our third team was in the game and acted like they wanted to take the ball right down the field It was a clean hard-fought game as everyone here saw of the most important developments in the game were Florida's goal line stand and the way our team came back for a touchdown after Vanderbilt scored in the fourth quarter" While he single out any one player over another Woodruff did remark that he felt Florida tackles Larry Wesley and Ray Midden did as good a job today as they did against Rice and that the guards held up very well for having so many plays run their way was a battle up front between both Woodruff spoke with a great deal of admiration for both King and Butler of Vanderbilt remarking that on many occasions they gained extra yardage after being hit hard for your car Guepe Woodruff Laud Gator Team NASHVILLE Oct Vanderbilt Coach Art Guepe whose Commodores bowed to a crushing Florida attack 21-7 here this afternoon had praise for the Gator squad while listing mistakes by Vandy as one of the factors in the loss Coach Bob Woodruff refused to single out any one Florida player as the most outstanding but rather termed the victory a splendid team effort Here are the coaches statements following the contest: Coach statement: played fine football all the way through while our best play came in spurts We just made too many mistakes We lost the ball three times on fumbles: the answer fine kicking game was a factor while we take advantage of the wind when we had it in the first and third quarters Florida reserve power was stronger than ours and it became clearly distinguished in the 4th quarter Laws was outstanding among the Commodores to my mind And running was a welcome sight was mighty tough in there for Florida and that line.
