Melbourne Olympics Japanese fans think little of anything but first place The likely prospects for gold medals can be counted on one hand virtually all in the swimming pool an over-all picture Japan the United States and Australia will be the main for swimming titles said Reizo Koike swimming team manager and former Olympic breastroke star KOIKE PREDICTS None of the three is likely to sweep the field Koike predicted but history could step in and take a hand A flying start in early events could set Japan or the United States off on a rampage he said "Australia may win overwhelmingly or stagger to a miserable defeat Australia has no historical background of sweeping events like the United States and Koike said Japan and the United States have the historical background and victory in the opening 100-meter freestyle could set either nation roiling over the field he said Japan a power in Olympic swimming before World War II failed to win a single gold medal at Helsinki in Japan's first Olympics since the war SECOND TO USA Sportswriters moaned and the nation hung its head although the team still finished second only to the United States in swimming The Melbourne Olympics was set as a goal for regaining prewar glory But the rest of the world moved fast and Japan goes to Melbourne with a good but not great men's swimming team and a small and unimpressive women's team greatest hope is breast-stroker Masaru Furukawa He set four world's records in one day last year Furukawa still holds all four and looks like the class of the world in the 200-meter race GW Shades the fumble by Redskin Tom Dimitroff on GW's 41 yard line and in nine plays hammered out a touchdown The loss cut victory string at 10 straight The Redskins punched over a score with less than two minutes left in the game but could not match George extra point The big gain in touchdown drive came after Miami halted the Colonials on the Redskin 45 yard line George Washington quarterback Jack Henzes hurled a long pass fo Pete Spera that was good for 42 yards Miami dug in but after three unsuccessful tries Henzes bulled through the right side of the line from one foot out to score Spera kicked what proved the winning point The Redskins bounced back with a touchdown drive that jarred 70 yards in ten plays Harold Williams second string halfback kept the drive in motion with carries good for 7 16 and 16 yards From 13 yards out he skirted left end and drove across to score Redskin Don Smith converted but it was nullifield by a holding penalty His second try from 25 yards out fell short Both teams got off to slow starts in the first half with neither able to penetrate deeper than 20 yards from the goal line that was the way it was going to end But with only 1:58 left Arnold flung a mighty pass from the Notre Dame 45 that Lon Slaughter the smashing SMU back gathered in on the 14 Then Slaughter with Arnold faking a run around right end took a pitchout from the quarterback going into this game Notre Dame apparently jittery as a schoolboy his first day of class collected harmful penalties in gobs An assessment for roughing set up the first SMU touchdown An offside made
