Old Satirical Bite, Sharpness By HOWARD HEALY "How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying," which is at the Williamstown Summer Theater this week, is a musical old enough to have been around on the summer circuit for the last several years. Yet it has not lost Us satirical bite. That is as sharp as ever. And the incompetence, the nepotism, the clever inversion of values are all in full flower in the Williamstown production. Brashness Preserved So, too, is the brashness preserved, at least for the most part.

Whenever J. Pierrepont Finch, the young man on his way up in the World Wide Wicket Company, is about to score another victory, he turns to the audience and gives them a knowing smile of satisfaction. Ken Howard, as Finch, keeps this sharp edge of brashness alive throughout the whole production. Whenever he is about to lead on his boss, or throw in a fellow employe who is in his way, a nice sense of satisfaction emerges from Howard. Tony Capodilupo, who has re turned to Williamstown this week to play the role of the big boss, J.

B. Biggley, has an expert sense of timing that preserves all of the satire in his role. Convincing Portrayal He knows just how long to pause, or to let his eyebrows rise in surprise, or his mouth gape and he convinces us that he is indeed the president of STEER HOUSE OPEN -11 A.M.-ll P.M CLOSED SUNDAY I'hari-fHil Broiled Steaks 2 Nsrth Ot Si i il Glen A SARATOGA I ARTS CENTER SPECIAL EVENT! Some good lines escape him-such as when he announces that he has won the pool for correct ly guessing the measurements of Biggley's newest secretary, or when he is carried off just after he realizes that Finch has outsmarted him into a junior executive's position. There are only a few such moments as this, however, and when they do occur it seems to be due to Pendleton's intention of playing the role of the mama's-boy nephew who really doesn't have the sort of ambition to make him bristle with envy or ambition. Well-Handled Roles The role of Rosemary is handled well by Tanny McDonald, while Anne Ashcraft as Big- gley's siren favorite Hedy right on the mark as Rosemary's earthy opposite. Tom Brennan, as the advertising executive who went to the wrong college, makes a brief but very valuable contribution. The musical, the last of Williamstown's offerings this season, plays through Saturday.
