committee of the Board of Eductation and the Junior High mentor eems to In line tot the position Of course appointment to Jhe position vacated by Jack Green be official until the fulj board agrees on and pretty well known that the Board members are prone to disagree on numerous occasions However Tipton bas been eminently successful with the Junior High program and the long-standing belief that he could serve the athletic program best in that capacity seems to be crumbling And also generally known that Tipton has wanted the head football coaching job since last year and it might be assumed that the popular young Junior High coach would consider leaving the system if he get the head grid post at Science Hill not to say that Tipton is wielding any kind of an axe but every young coach aspires to climb in the profession and Tipton probably feels the time is ripe for moving up provided the Board of Education agrees with him Right or wrong the activity on the athletic front at Science Hill Science Hill 17 of 33 Science Hill ran up a 12-4 score on the Junior Bucs early in the game but the champions to-be thundered back and trailed only 24-22 at the first stop The score was knotted at RALEIGH March 3lfl Fiery guard Vic Molodet sent 12 of his first 13 -shots whistling through the nets tonight as he scored 32 points to lead North Carolina State to a 76-64 victory over Wake Forest and give the Wolfpack its third successive Atlantic Coast Confer ence basketball championship The triumph qualified State for a berth in the NCAA tournament in New York against Canisius March 12 Wake Forest beaten by State in three earlier meetings this season scored 10 points in a row after Molodet had opened the game with his first basket but Coach Everett State club with Molodet on fire fought back to move ahead at 25-24 with 5:30 to play in the half The second of three quick hoops by Capt Phil DiNardo put the Wolfpack ahead and they never again lost the lead Molodet hero in overtime victory over Wake Forest a week ago which earned the-Wolfpack top seed in the tournament and fifth place in the national rankings put on amazing display He had the 12400 fans bugeyed and Wake Forest shaken with his deadly shooting mostly from well outside The 5-11 senior from East Chicago Ind missed only one of his 10 shots in the first half to stake his club to a 38-32 lead He- wound up with 79 points for three tournament games a new record Huffine and Jim Leonard of Training School The Junior Bucs defeated the Hill-toppers 89 to 71 for the title Thesituatlon has beerT some time and the addition of Sidney Smallwood as overall athletic director of the system ahd the forthcoming appointment of a "new head football coach are steps in the right direction if the overall plan is effectively pursued I understand there are other applicants for the post in addition to Tipton but at this time the athletic committee and possibly the Board too feel that a man already within the system might better be able to pursue the task at hand The chances are that appointment of a new head basketball coach may wait until a later date perhaps not at all if determined that Sidney Smallwood who has been highly successful with Hilitoppers basketball teams will be able to ach basketball in addition to his overall duties THE DAVID LIPSCOMB College Bisons invade Johnson City Monday night to battle the East Tennessee College Buccaneers and a crowd of 5000 fans is expected to pour into' Memorial Building to see the championship game of District 27 National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics Fans like a title game and this is it The winner goes to Kansas City to represent Tennessee's District 27 in the NAIA national tournament The Bucs if they can beat David Lipscomb for the fourth time this season would be making their third trip to Kansas City and would possibly stand one of their better chance of winning in the national meet ETSC dealth Lipscomb a 72-58 defeat then a 74-63 loss and during the Volunteer State Conference tourney the Bucs shaded the Improved Bisons 65-63 in the title game Monday encounter between the two possesses a trem-' or of excitement which will be felt by the fans as well as the teams themselves Lipscomb is reported all hepped up about the contest and the Bison rooting section is slated to be a big one In Gary Colson and Archie Crenshaw area fans will see two fine small college basketball performers And needless to say in East Tennessee State's sparkling Buccaneers area fans will see a finely coached quintet that has rolled along to a 19-6 record the regular season championship and the tournament championship of its conference The Madison Brooks coached team has behind it victories over such teams as Spring Hill Ala Florida-State VMX Springfield and Tennessee Tech The ETSC Lipscomb contest promises some fast action and the fact that State bas defeated Lipscomb three times already this season means little In this one big effort by both outfits a rivalry fraught encounter and the Middle Tennessee team would like nothing better than to cart back to Nashville a win over the Bucs Lipscomb and other teams in the VASC are conscious' of the fact that smooth aggregation has no seniors on it and that domination of VSAC honors may extend even further than this year when the Bucs invaded the capital and brought back all the marbles THE REGION ONE high school basketball tournament will probably be played here at ETSC Memorial Building Thursday Friday and Saturday The eight teams which will compete have already been decided since the finalists in the four district tourneys are eligible for the regional meet That means that Johnson City High School and Training School will represent District Two: Elizabethton and Blountville will represent District One Bulls Gap and Rogersville will represent District Three and Rush Strong and Sevierville will represent District Four Drawings have already been here and there that the pro-game had to fold here in the Appalachian League Of course it spring yet and the fever hit locally for the faithful few hundred who continued to support the game here Here and there is talk of reviving semipro ball in Johnson City had quite a bit of semipro ball in the area for years and likely that some type of baseball program will crop up in the city In the meantime I think a study should be made In the East Tennessee area to decide if professional ball caa ever be revived here There is no reason why professional baseball must slay dead The Idea of a four-club
