Eliza-bethton and Kingsport in Tobacco Bowl 'it looks like the game come to pass Knoxville West apparently has a strangle-hold on a bid to the affair in Greene county and Elizabethton looms as the team the West outfit will play However other teams including Johnson only-once-beaten HilHoppers are being talked for bowl spots Johnson City took its role seriously Friday night and bumped off Erwin 7-6 in the last two minutes and 15 seconds to put itself in a good spot to share the Big Five title with Only Kingsport remain as a possible stumbling block for the Toppers and likely that playing at home Dobyns-Bennett will rate the favorite However Coach Niles outfit will probably be taking this one very very seriously nI: Kingsport a couple of years ago kept the Hilltoppers from being undefeated by knocking them off 6 0 at Kingsport in the final game of the campaign Last year Johnson City nudged the In- dians here Kingsport will be out for revenge and also to wrap up the Big Five Cubtne 3 Aaftty SviBier With two Big Five wins now Johnson City could bounce right back to the top and a tie with Elizabethton for the loop crown IT COULD BE that in view of the scribblings of Kingsport scribe Frank Creasy the Dobyns-Bennett team may be feeling its against the Hilltoppers Creasy irked because I said here recently that Johnson City was in the seat and would probably have much to say wins the Big Five came out with a bribing defense of 12-7 win over Elizabethton and criticized Johnson role as a Well the record shows Johnson City is still just as much in the seat as before 7 The Hilltoppers have plenty of potential in this last to pick up half of the championship itself to help Elizabethton to a share of it by beating Kingsport or to acknowledge Kingsport as the sole champion by losing to Dobyns-Bennett With no particular desire to defend myself in the matter I coing to quote from a letter sent to the Kingsport Times-News by Carroll L' Cockrum 809 East Chilhowie Avenue Johnson City A copy was sent to me and to the Elizabethton Star Sir: letter is in reference to an article in your newspaper oi today November 3 1954 entitled Teamwork Is Margin In written by Mr Frank Creasy I would like to say at the outset that this letter is in no way meant to belittle the fine effort of the Kingsport football team last week in winning over Elizabethton In fact while watching the game I felt that the Kingsport club was playing better than I had previously believed possible and I do not believe that I have ever witnessed such excellent coaching in a high school game as was displayed by Coach Williams last Friday night He is to be congratulated for his fine strategy and for the spirit of his squad am a resident of Johnson City and having never lived either in Kingsport or Elizabethton have no particular interest in either team except in their relation to the Hilltoppers In his eagerness to Mr fcmyth of the Johnson City Press and Mr Luther of the Elizabethton Star Mr Creasy overlooks the fact that Mr comments were 1 included in an editorial and should have been answered in kind and not in a featured article so many words he states that Mr Smyth is in error in reasoning that Johnson City bolds the key as to who does or does not via the Big Five title look at the facts Should Johnson City beat both Erwin and Kingsport they win tie with Betsy for the crown Should Johnson City bow to Erwin and win over Kingsport Elizabethton wiU hold the title alone Should Kingsport win over Johnson City of course they will again be champions Howev-r since Johnson City figures in two games and Kingsport la only one I think that Johnson City is very much the driver's seat and I do not feel as if I am holding a steering wheel by a clever use of comparative scores Mr Creasy insinuates that he doubts that Johnson City will give Kingsport much of a game and then disregards comparative scores altogether in stating that Dobyns-Bennett would have beaten Betsy last week on either a wet or a dry field By this method of comparison it is a matter of record that the Indians should not have been al- lowed on the same gridiron with the Cyclones he sneers at the statement of Mr Hayes of Elizabethton those who saw Friday game realize that a return match of the two games on a dry field and under normal conditions -v- Coh tinned On Page 2-B CoL 3
