for a new trial was turned down and last May Judge Watson sentenced Hohensee to a year and a day in a federal penitentiary and fined two of his firms $700 each But Hohensee was permitted to post $5000 pending an appeal to the US Circuit Court at Philadelphia Green ordered Hohensee taken into custody SPURNED OWN MEDICINE Protesting that his constitutional rights were being violated Hohensee flatly for prices ranging from $1-500 to $2000 Deciding that was more in his line after all Hohensee went back to lecturing and selling He was preparing a lecture series for the residents of San Antonio in October 1953 when he heard that he had been indjeted by a federal grand jury at Scranton Pa on nine counts of misbranding food products and selling them as drugs Levy sought the indictment because the products were mailed from the district covered by the US Court for the Middle District of Pennsylvania LABELED FOOD This was the same charge to which Hohensee pleaded guilty in US District Court in Phoenix Ariz in 1949 Now he airily termed the government charges Arranged before a US Commissioner in Scranton he pleaded innocent and posted bond for trial To newspapermen he said is just another example of persecution instead of In November 1954 his trial was -called in Scranton before US District Judge Albert Watson Much of the case had been prepared by Assistant US Attorney Teller who conceded at the out- culosis and would the blood to utilize Vitamin His cure-all would asthma pinworms tapeworms and symptoms of worms Symptoms of worms Hohensee explained included convulsions fits fainting spells gritting of the teeth while asleep dry cough and restlessness at night And he that the tea would not only but in time would one to discard Hohensee himself wore glasses when he read In spite of these obviously fraudulent statements Hohensee somehow contrived to keep within the law most of the time Oh yes on Nov 4 1943 he was arrested in Seattle for selling drugs without a license and the following April he paid a $250 fine in the same city for posing as a doctor of medicine The American Medical Association was a favorite target for the nature doctor Carrying on what he described as crusade for proper living" Hohensee inevitably ended with a vitriolic attack upon the AMA as the "American Murderers Inspectors became accustomed to his attacks on legitimate physicians as who can only reach into your pockets for your Hohensee charged that docors recommend his health foods be defeating their own ends They want you in perfect Inspector Eloise Stroessner at tended a total of 19 lectures in Denver and Phoenix and estimated that Hohensee took in over $800 each night This however was but small change compared to the proceeds from his sale of health foods copies of his lectures (considerably toned down in print) cooking utensils cook books and a mail order course on Miss Stroessner was present in Denver the night Hohensee "revealed for the first time the true story behind the death of Wendell Willkie the Republican Presidential nominee in 1940 died of a heart ailment on Oct 8 1944 The audience listened in what Inspector Stroessner called as Hohensee his voice shaking with emotion confided that was killed by the He hinted that a doctor offered Willkie Scotch whisky and soda The patient agreed to accept it according to Hohensee upon the condition that the whiskey would be mixed with warm soda After a dramatic pause Hohensee roared houpr later Wendell Willkie was The nature doctor from Penn- Bjr RUTH REYNOLDS Today we shall study the case of Adolphus Hohensee revered by hundreds as a martyr to unrealistic laws but excoriated by US Attorney Julius Levy of Scranton Pa as of the most reprehensible charlatans in modern medical The American Medical Association and the US Department of Health Education and Welfare share view At 53 Hohensee is impressive looking He stands 6 feet 3 and weight 245 pounds He has piercing dark eyes wears a waxed mustache and has a resonant voice with power to charm Born in Lodz Poland in 1903 Hohensee came to the United States as a small boy For years he drifted from one job to another and the early found him driving a taxicab in Washington This was before he discovered that sick people will pay anything at for any article which promises them or even the hope of it First the former cab driver endowed himself with a medical degree Next he bought a considerable quantity of peppermint tea packaged it in cylindershaped containers and labeled it Select Imported Peppermint The Hohensee trademark was a bucking steer There was nothing illegal about this or about the fact that the tea was advertised as a food to be used a delicious table Printed directions in the package were short and simple: one level teaspoonful of Adolphus Peppermint for each cup of water Steer four minutes Do not boil Sweeten to taste" There was nothing illegal about that either agreed Attorney Wil liam Risteau of the Washing ton staff of the Food and Drug Division of the US Department of Health when the tea was brought to his attention But you just sell three ounces of peppermint tea for $1 unless you make people think the tea is extraordinary And Hohensee was doing just that in Lancaster Pa Phoenix Ariz Denver Oklahoma City San Antonio Omaha etc From town to town he went on a lecture tour His lectures were attended largely by ailing middle-aged people and those suf fering from infirmities of age They wanted to see this man billed as a miracle and they believed him when he told them he could cure them of any disease known to After a promotional talk Hohensee told his listeners exactly where his miracle remedies could be purchased and for how much mail order Occasionally he fell afoul the law In May 1933 the dapper served 30 days in a Houston Jail for using the mails to defraud But that deter him or his customers either By the year 1937 he had acquired 200 acres of land in Benton Township near Scranton This was his mailing address As time went on profits from his sale of tea and other harmless products enabled him to expand his 200 acres to 1200 Then he established a Health-A-Tarium Known as El Rancho Adolphus this became his national headquarters for Scientific Living Inc and El Rancho Products Inc With experience Hohensee improved his procedures Using the techniques of medicine men he acted as his own injuring pamphlets into the city or town where he' was scheduled to speak These pamphlets informed potential customers that they were about to see and hear secrets revealed at Those interested in were invited to attend four free lectures Tickets of admission were enclosed At the end of each free lecture Hohensee suggested that donations of no less than $1 Be made to assist him in carrying on his work Almost everybody and most of them paid also for a subsequent series of lectures which told The rate: $25 a person From time to time inspectors of the Food and Drug Division of the Department of Health sat in on his lectures and took notes They found themselves fascinated was a con man of marked said Kenneth Kimlel of the St Louis office super-salesman He had to be to sell himself and his products heard fantastic statements in my time but none of them can ever hope to equal those made by For example as he revealed the secrets of curative power Hohensee elevated peppermint tea to the status of a wonder drug It would he stated in the removal of It was good for arthritis It should be taken rebuild the whole body to eliminate stagnant urine and thus prevent diseases which men and women have that result from toxins produced by decomposition of stagnant urine in collapsed He asured his audiences that the tea was also good for tuber old-time CONFIDENT LIVING Young Veteran Shoivn Healing Power By NORMAN VINCENT PEALE Not too long ago at a hospital in the South I had an interesting discussion about the partnership of medicine' and faith with a truly great surgeon This doctor told me a fascinating story illustrating the importance of that healing partnership The surgeon had a young veteran on his operating table Attendants were preparing him for the operation The kindly surgeon came in to say a word to the boy As he stood looking down at the patient he realized that the boy was deeply despondent A kindly man he tousled the hair and asked are you feeling so the boy replied think ever come through this Thoughtfully the doctor turned to the attendants take him Then he said PEALE to the boy come up to the ward to see you just a few Later sitting by the bed he began talking to him in relaxed and friendly manner about his home his mother his father and his hopes for the future you believe in your religion he asked Oh yes the boy answered "and I try to practice a religious man the doctor told him I became a doctor I dedicated myself to the Lord and told Him I wanted to help people That is why I became a surgeon only servant Every time I operate on a patient I dedicate my hands and my mind to the lord I ask Him to put His healing touch upon me so that I may use my instruments with skill I dedicate to Him all my knowledge and I dedicate my patient to Him as he continued morning going to operate on you I want you to come into the operating room really believing that we are a spiritual team at work The team is the Lord the Great Healer: you a relaxed and believing patient and I a dedicated servant of God The three of us together will be successful in our task" The boy nodded there was an understanding smile on his face When he was rolled into the operating room the next morning the smile was still there The doctor asked do you feel Doctor I feel all Bill answered want you to know that all the team is here Go The surgeon did go ahead and the operation was successful In telling me about this incident the doctor added "If we can get people to realize that they are the creations of One who can heal them if only they will apply the Divine laws of health we doctors can perform miracles of faith and As he spoke I thought of a verse from St Luke which I have always considered one of the most beautiful in the Bible: all the crowd sought to touch him for power came forth from him and healed them (Revised Standard Version) Personally I believe that this tremendous healing power is available to you and me for it has been promised and the promise has been fulfilled over and over again You can have it if you desire but not without giving your whole self It will not' come unless you have real faith and can truly say help I will give up my sins I will have done with my doubts I will conquer my Conflicts Then He will give His healing grace to you as he did to that crowd long ago when they sought to touch Him power came forth from him and healed them all" set the defense assertions that the label on food products stated plainly they were nothing more or less than innocent health foods the defendant overlooked one important point in the Teller told the jury forgot that when he stood on the lecture platform and attributed curative powers to his health foods he was actually making them drugs He offered them for sale and his victims purchased them only because he made them believe they would cure anything from bad eyesight to The government called witness after witness including all the inspectors who had listened to the lectures Many of customers had awakened to the fact that his health foods had not relieved their ailments and some of them were called to testify Through it all the i defendant whispered busily to his counsel Horace Donnelly of Washington During trial recesses le assailed newspapermen for my To a friend he called the newspapermen and of the Oh yes Hohensee had friends lots of them Many were willing to testify in his behalf HOHENSEE DEFENDED Mrs Lorein Anderson of Denver paid her own way across the country to be at trial She testified that the peppermint tea was a good beverage and a good diet Furthermore she declared Hohensee never prescribed anything as a cure or treatment for a Mrs Avelia Barnett a Phoenix Ariz rooming house operator came directly to the point: came here to speak for Dr Ho-sensee because been persecuted But the defendant who failed to take the stand in his own behalf was quickly convicted on all seven counts of misbranding I go to he told newsmen stage a hunger strike" Sjnce conviction was the second for the same violation it was automatically classed as a felony and therefore punishable by a jail sentence of 45 years (five years on each count) and a $45000 fine ($5000 on each count) Far from subdued Hohensee petitioned for a new trial posted $10000 bail anct flew to San Antonio Addressing a capacity audience of Texans less than two weeks from his conviction he blamed his troubles on by the American Murderers Conveniently overlooking the fact that Judge Watson could not impose sentence until he hac ruled on the new trial motion Hohensee told his audience tha only reason the jurist did not jail me is because afraid of Then he was arrested by San Antonio police for displaying a medical emblem on the license plate of his car And he was also booked on a charge of practice of the healing Fined $100 Hohensee paid anc departed for his Pennsylvania health farm When a substitute speaker was found to complete the lectures he could hardly make himself heard because Hohensee supporters kept booing policemen in the audience Hohensee was soon on the wing again and back in trouble In June 1955 Omaha Chief of Police Harry Green was in the audience when the health expert told his listeners that he could the as well as the with his special mixture of fruit juices Actress Resents PARIS Jan 19 (INS)-Christian ladylike French Deauty has proved she can be an actress in her own right even if people find that she resembles the former Hollywood star who has become Princess of Monaco Miss Page played opposite Silken she plays a French fashion model and co-stars with David Niven Now Genevieve is bored by what she calls roles want to be Ticked anc! by the camera like to play character roles A street-girl for and on and on and selling On March 8 1949 a federal grand jury in Phoenix Ariz indicted him on charges of misbranding food products and selling them as drugs He pleaded guilty and was fined $1800 by US District Judge Dan Ling Hohensee went right back to lecturing and selling by mail His now included Wheat Germ Oil Herb Laxative Concentrated Broth Whole Wheat and Improved Germ of Wheat as well as peppermint tea Each had great curative powers he said Inspector Kimlel was particularly irate over the claims made by Hohensee for his wheat germ oil It was supposed to the frequency of heat flashes cure pelvic pains and cramps oss of sexual fluid sterility and absence of pep and Most importantly according to the lecturer: will prevent senility weakening of memory inactivation of thinking imperfect coordination between brain and muscle and death before anything worthwhile to be recorded in history has been accomplished It will put off death to the very last After Kimlel jotted down that last statement and read it over he decided that was his limit for that lecture He got up and left Never one to overlook a source of profit Hohensee always gave his listeners directions for preparing his wonder foods It was not accidental that Scientific Living Inc manufactured several gadgets for that very purpose One was the Adolphus Tender-izer advertised by the as guaranteed to vaporize an entire meal for one It was said to include 18 pieces of stainless Later US Attorney Levy said that if Hohensee had sold these at $25 apiece he would have received a profit of at least $10 on each But he sold them at $195 each The US Health Department got many complaints ATOMIC PROOF Typical is that of Mrs George Kramer of Denver who told As sistant US Attorney Stephen A Teller all about her experience with the tenderizer Guarantee or no guarantee I was never able to cook anything in she said She was also dissatisfied with the Hohensee Blender which she bought for $42 Hohensee had said that this particular item constructed along the same lines as the ordinary malted shaker us'ed in drug stores had a duty But a few weeks after Mrs Kramer got her blender it refused to operate She took it to an electrician and was astounded to hear that it had awfully cheap All told between the money she spent for lecture fees health foods gadgets and pamphlets Mrs Kramer was soon parted from $700 guess I bought everything he had to sell but the she said Such stories as this plus notes taken by US Health Department inspectors prompted several federal including Levy think they could take Hohen see out of circulation through his own words Investigators managed to get wire recordings of several of his lectures The apparently smelled a rat and for a time turned away from foods His 1951 scheme also appealed to the human instinct to off death to the very last It was so fantastic it almost succeeded First Adolphus established Hohensee Park which was nothing but a rundown wooded area in the vicinity of his El Rancho Adolphus Next he divided his into small parcels of land Then he boarded a train for New York City Before New York authorities caught up with him the promoter made considerable progress in his campaign to sell his lots to New Yorkers who had never seen them He warned his gullible customers that New York City was about to be blown up by the Russians Then he explained that his lots in Pennsylvania were and that any one who owned one would have a safe place to go Some 20 suckers complained when they failed to receive deeds for lots th5y had paid for De tectives working out of the office of Attorney General Nathaniel Goldstein arrested Hohensee on a charge of violating the New York State Real Property Act Hohensee insisted it was all a mistake Furthermore he addedt he much preferred returning the money and forgetting all about the deals This was allowed and the charges were dismissed Later it was learned that the lots were appraised by a Scranton real estate firm as worth $10 each- They had been sold in New HONG KONG Jan 19 (INS) Rock Roll Cha-Cha-Cha and other Western dance rhythms have penetrated the Bamboo Curtain And they are spreading fast much to the concern of the Communist Chinese authorities Open and clandestine dancing parties are being held in Shanghai as well as Peking almost daily lasting into the early hours of
