Northwestern Defeats Navy GEORGE BOWEN BALTIMORE Oct 7 (ff) Navy was torpedoed by the smashing of Rich Athan and bombarded by Dick passing in a 22-0 shellacking dealt out by Northwestern before 12000 spectators today Athan ripped through for two' touchdowns after teaming with Dick Alban to tear the Navy line apart Quarterback Flowers flipped a touchdown pass to End Don Stonesifer and Bob Burson kicked a field goal for the rout supremacy in its second straight triumph was nevfcr Alban went 12 times for 44 Flowers completed 12 outof 22 passes for 121 yards In addition to up ground attack the seconds remaining split the goal posts from an angle nine yards from the goal line The Tech effort was marked by desperation all day as sophomore Quarterback Haywood Sullivan passed his team into the lead in the fourth period and threatened to split the game wide time and time again The Tech pass attack was negli-ble but the running of its fleet of scatbacks was consistent if not too spectacular Bobby North Buster Humphries and Red Patton came through with short lunges and first downs in the final period when it counted and Bubba Sykes who even dress out last week called a touchdown drive in the final period and pushed the ball over himself from the one-yard- line Sykes came in as quarterback when first stringer Joe Salome was injured in the first half Aside from the sparkling passes of Sullivan another sophomore Buford Long kept the Florida drives plunging when it counted He moved through big holes made by Tackle Leonard Balas and was one of most dependable receivers Along with Floyd Huggins and Billy Reddell Long was the life of the Florida backfield and the equal of anything Tech could offer About 21000 fans saw the game In seven plays after receiving the kickoff Humphries and North with an assist from a ten-yard Salome pass pushed the ball over to score North provided the punch with a 40-yard run Humphries plunged over from the five In the second quarter Huggins Long and Billy Reddell moved the ball from the Tech 44 over the goal line in seven plays from the three Sullivan provided toe show of the day in the final period Jack Nichols intercepted a pass from Sykes and was downed on the Tech 41 to set up the second Florida score Sullivan kept the ball In toe air on almost every play connecting with Long for one 23-yard gain and with End Don Brown for another 18
