We liape all those interested in our loctd politics will read it. We liopo the Central Committee will read it, and especially that part which referg to tiic appointment of firm, fair and competent judges. If every voting precinct in tiiis county hud sudi judges at the primary as Dickerson had two years ago, there would be no cause of complaint. The judges here positively refused to let auv man vole whom they did not believe would vote Die Democratic ticket at the general election. All the murmuring nnd grumbling that we ever hail in this couuty about slush votes came from Die river precincts, where judges were appointed who did not have the buck-bonc to re (use Republicans from voting at Die primaries.

If they want to know how slush votes ure prevented in Dicker-son, we will say Dint such men ns J. W. Williams, J. D. Million, W.

T. Cox and T. B. Hau-ly act as judges. Appoint men with Die same grit aud buck-hone of Dicse men aud you won't have auv slush votes.

If celebrations go by turns in Lewis county Montieello ought to have one this 4th. What do our citizens say to having one? A meeting at the court house some evening soon could determiue Die matter. A flue young horse was stolen from J. M. Gentry, near Slielbyvilie, last Friday night.

Last Sunday evening this section ol country was visited by a regular August thunder storm, traveling from south-west to north-east. Really its approach had all the indications of a cyclone. Wlmt will become of this country should these storms keep on multiplying? A. booming; says lie believes lie is grinding and selling three times us much flour as any country mill in the county. Mr. Hull is a miller of long experience, and lie is worthy and deserving of the patronage lie is receiving. We hope that during (lie coining year we will not again hear Republicans damning our Democratic county for assessing heir lands higher than their Democratic neighbors, simply because they were Republicans. Let all come to the meeting of Dio Board of equalization or forever hold their peace.

In a conversation with Capt. Halley, ou Monday, lie stated that in all his experience tiiis year surpassed all previous years in lie number of public sales this part of the country, but added that one redeeming feature was that stock of ail kinds brought a good price and some a fancy price and as long as such is the case we need not fear that we arc retrograding. Nellie Dickerson, an old colored woman 110 years old who is known to many ouly ns Aunt Nellie, dropped suddenly dead yesterday evening while returning from a visit. An inquest was held by Coroner Waddill. which resulted in developing the above.

She was undoubtedly the oldest person living iu this county and had led a very remarkable, life. Kirksvillc Democrat. A short squib appearing iu the columns of the Journal of Marcli 24th, over the signature of Porter, has caused some little dissatisfaction on account of its being rather unqualified. The language at the time was not approved of by the editor of this paper, and he refused to be responsible for the same, hence the fictitious signature. We will say for the benefit of those interested, that the parties referred to in the item were a man and wile from Quincy, attending court here, aud were putting on a great deal ef sickening style.

The city authorities failed to grant them the courtesy of Saturday night for closing, and some loss is borne by the proprietors, consequent on the sudden closing The council should sec that no one is allowed the same privilege, as the experience of several years lias demonstrated that such a idaco cannot he run Ou a moral plan.
