Louis a few days ago Hon. Junes G. Blair, ex-member of Congress, was interviewedby a reporter to a daily paper concerning bis opin. ion oh the question of seating or un scatiag Congressman-elect Roberts ol Utah. Following arc Governor Blair's views on the subject: The common law of the United States Is very against polygamous marriages.

The statutes of the States, except Utah, are against them. Under the law of the United States 3Ir. Roberta is guilty of bigamy in his last two marriages. We may overlook the fact that a man is a thief and, receive him into Congress but no thief, while plyingliis trade, should be allowed to continue in the national Legislature. We may overlook an act ol robbery and admit a man to Congress, robber, while continu Ing at his trade or profession, should be retained as a lawmaker for the nation.

It is tbesame with relation to murder and other crimes. We can forgive and overlook one act of bigamy, but to admit a roan to Congress while bej is living with several wives is a bnrlesqueupon decencyand an Insult to society. Society should not iJeibua ou tr agetH embers of all religious denominations should petition Congress'to not admit Roberts, and, if admitted, to expel him. IJdont believe, however, that Congress will unseat the Slormon, added Mr. Blair, reflectively7for," unless there beauniversal demand for it, the others will sympathizewith him.

There are so many libertines, blacklegs and men of unsavorycharacter in Congress today tbat'I think they will be to stand by Roberts. AFino Piece of Color Work An experienced art critic gives" It as his opinion that there will be no handsomer piece of color work issued this year than Hoods Sarsaparilla Calendar for 1809. It is not only useful, but artistic and beautiful, and up to date. The charming American Girl whose beautiful face appears with a delicately painted flag in tbe background, makes a pleasing feature which anyone will be pleased to have before him the whole of 1809. We suppose druggists wilij have this calendar, oru copy may be obtained by sending cents to C.

I. Hood Lowell, 3tass. Tbe democraticmembers of tbe bouse of Representa tives a Jefferson.Clty had a night and nominated'. J. Ward forSpeaker and; Iler.ry A.

Newman of County, for Chief Clerk. Cornelius Roach "of Carthage, was nominatedJSecretary of the Senate. Every Republican Senator, says Ilan-na, Penrose, Deboe and Simon, tbe four latest acquisitions, haaa committee chairmanship. One of the unwritten rules of the Senate is that each member of the majority shall be provided with a chairmanship. The only reason these four men are not chairmen is because the party in power has not time to make places for them.

It i3 quite a soft snap to be chairman of a committee which never meets, and not more than ono-thlrd of the Senate commute 8 are ever called together. Chairmen are given a handsomely furnished room, where they spend their leisure moments. 3Ir. Hanna cant kick, however, as he uses the White House for his loafing and sleeping. Senator Platt of New York is chairman of that most important com mittee, transportation routes to tbe seaboard.

It has not met since he became chairman. Notice of Administration with Will Annexed. Notice Is hereby given that letters of administration, with the will annexed, upon tbe estate of J. II. Johnson, deceased, were granted to the undersigned on I he 31st day of December, 1898, by tbe Probate court of Lewis county, Missouri.

All persons having claims against said estate are required to exhibit them for allowance to the administrator withn one year from the date of s-tld letters or they may be precluded from any benefit of such estate; and if such claims are rot exhibited within two years from the date of this publication, they 6hall be forever debarred. Bostonhas an elegant new Union depot, and some of the citizens of that city claim that Boston has outdone St. Louis. Uncle Sam triumpantlf raised the United States flag over Moro Castle, Havana, last Sunday, and the Spaniards evacuated. There is no doubt that the Dons have a hundred times regretted the fact that they ever molested the Maine' In Ha-vana harbor. Gillett, the celebrated Kansas cattle king who recently absconded and went to Mexico, has oflered to return home if his creditors will protect him from the law and compromise on their claims.

The'four daughters of James Iloch-stetter of Trail, Ohio, were married under the sameceremony to four brothers, the sons of John Sumers, of the same place. By an order of the Secretary of War, It. A. Alger, the Fourth Missouri regiment has been mustered out of the service. Tula is the regiment of which Jerry Johnson, of Lewis county, is a member.

Bridgeport, Connecticut, citizens propose to insure their lives and borrow city funds on their policies. This step is taken because public improvements are necessary and the city cannot issue bonds. The congregation of the Mormon church at Independence, the strongest outside of the State of Utah, on Blonday adcuted resolutions praying Congiess to unseat B. II. Robeits, Congressman-elect horn Utah, because he is a polygamist.

A majority of the republicans in the Pennsylvania Legislature in their caucus meeting declared in favor of Senator 31. S. Quay. Some maintain that there are euough republicans disgusted with Quays shady record to combine with the democrats and accomplish his defeat This is a matter, however, that will not be definitely known until later. A little child wasjjurned to death in St.

Louis Saturday night of last week while donning her Santa Clans costume. An elabarateiy decorated Christmas tree was an entcrlainment at the home, and a lighted taper ignited the costume. The family and friends of the little girl were unable to put ont the fire until after she bad been fatally burned. William Oleson, of St. Louis county, a character of unsavory reputation, was taken from bis borne a few nights ago by masked neighbors, tied to a telegraph pole and horsewhipped.

Later he attempted to kill the man be believed was the leader and is now In jail at Clayton on a charge of assault with intent to kill. The voters of St. Clair county have elected new county judges to serve In jail. The retiring judges have been in jail ever since last June for contempt of the Federal Court in refusing to levy a tax upon the people to pay ra'lroad bonds, for the building of a railroad that was never built. Bonds to the amount of $100,000 were secured by promoters of the scheme, who sold them in the East leaving the St.

Clair county people without nny railroad. The bonds, with Interest, amount toover $1,000,000. The bill introduced in Congress by non. James T. Lloyd week before Marriage Licenses.
