Notre Dame Stadium than Coach Wilson Collins of Knoxville High school today as Notre Dame defeated Illinois 14 to 6 but there was none more interested in the ball game While the famqus Ilini Orange and Blue of the Big Ten battled the green-shirted Fighting Irish Coach Collins sat in the press box and took in everything that occurred on the field at that he would exclaim was the same as our play The entire squad of Knoxville players sat in reserved seats (high in the stands behind the south goal) and picked up a few pointers on how the grand old game of football is supposed to be played Coach Collins was feeling pretty good at having defeated Waite High of Toledo 13 to 0 last night and had not a care as he watched the Irish run through and pass through the Illini do you think Tennessee would stack up with Illinois he was asked is on a par with Illinois They should be able to defeat Illinois the way they are playing Approximately 40000 fans Martin Leads Arkansas Win LITTLE ROCK Ark Oct 15 M3) Lanky Neal Martin a swirling dervish of a halfback led the scarlet-shirted University of Arkansas Razorbacks to a 42 to 6 victory today over the bewildered Texas Longhorns Thrice in the first half Martin swivel-hipped his way over the Texas goal line from within the 10 yard stripe He watched proceedings from the bench in the last half The Razorbacks surprised 10-000 shirt-sleeved fans by specializing in a ground attack for the most part gaining 207 yards through the Texas line The hapless Texans scored first Peterson blocking a Porker punt and picking it up to race 46 yards into pay dirt Tenn Poly Eleven Beat Ky Teachers BOWLING GREEN Ky Oct 15 M) A fourth period pass with less than two minutes to play remaining gave a lighter Tennessee Poly eleven from Cookeville a 7-6 upset victory over the Western Kentucky Teachers today Although outplayed the plucky Tennessee boys played heads up football and annulled several Western scoring chances by intercepting passes and recovering fumbles The Eagles snagged four Western passes and recovered two Hilltop fumbles one of which paved the way for the winning score cupant of the "iron from Chicago was rolled into the stadium in his giant trailer With reflecting mirrors through the top of the trailer he watched the game Over on the Illini side Coach Bob Zuppke the Sage of Cham' paign paced nervously up and down before the bench Elmer Layden fullback on the combination showed his nervousness by puffing on incessant cigarettes The game itself packed one thrill after another as the all-American candidate Beinor and Captain McGolarick led their mates to the victory return of a punt in the third quarter for a tpuchdown stood the entire crowd press and all on their feet yelling as if each had a bet on that partieular play Wehrli Illinois trucking left half supplied the works in the third as he drove down to the Irish 11-yard line only to lose on downs However a blocked punt two minutes later led to a touchdown was a great Coach Collins said at its conclusion I think football here is better than in the South Alabama should beat Notre Dame You know they defeated Georgia Tech only one touchdown There are several teams in the South which could give either Illinois or Notre Dame a run and Tennessee is one of ground we thought he had been seriously hurt I asked you hear me George? Where does It answered fan me a little bit baby Not half as hot as he was in that third canto at that The game was a sell-out with several hundred late comers being denied entrance So 40 or 50 fans climbed upon a Negro shanty standing a hundred yards or so from the stadium Late in the game when it was apparent that Alabama was a lost dog some Tide supporter set the shack on fire Ensued some very rapid scrambling down Considering the circumstances that liquor is legal here there were remarkably few inebriates at the game Local officers say that since the hard stuff came back they have seen fewer drunks than they can remember Even at that Black Maria made several trips to and from town Charlie Holm played a splendid game He accounted for a generous percentage of the Alabama tackles and ran with plenty of power Neyland had backs on the bench however who were superior to anything the Tide shewed Holm excepted And Holm Is no Cafego For that matter who besides George is? An unusual situation arose during the game On the some play one team held and the other clipped It was ruled no-dice Tennessee was almost the victim of a cruel break when 1 a punt struck McCarren and was recovered by Alabama It was still too much line though Seoe by periods: TENNESSEE 7 Alibsms 6 I I Tennessee scoring Touchdowns Coffman 2 point from try after touchdown Wvatt (place-kick) surprised the Green by scoring in four plays after the kickoff Dartmouth tied the score at seven all in the second quarter as Howie Nopper took a pass from Bill Hutchinson Captain Bob MacLeod threw a Friday with Chilhowee Institute at Chilhowee Coach Kennetlv Coile last night expressed his approval of his last encounter but did not predict a victory Friday have a fairly good team but if the boys get too cocky some team is sure to come along and upset the he said Coach Coile said his boys are in good shape physically and shouldbe at their best for the Chilhowee tilt Coach Frank Thomas of Alabama had nothinr bat praise were defeated by a great football be said was as fine a team as I have seen since my Alabama team in 1934 Our players thought George Cafego was a much harder running back than Vie Bottari fine ball BIRMINGHAM Ala Oct 15 While as a rule I do not hold with those who credit football coaches with all good things their teams achieve and blame all bad performances on the inadequacy of the material I think I shall stop over a trifle tonight in extolling Major Robert Neyland thickchested VpT top stuff The man really accomplished a masterpiece of coaching in his preparation for and success in the Alabama game Take the matter of keying his minipns up for the crucial combat A more perfectly primed outfit than the Vols of today probably never stuck a cleat into a gridiron They entered the game in precisely that delicate frame of mind desired not too cocky but confident realizing the magnitude of the job but at the same time convinced it could be done On the other paw Frank outfit obviously had discounted his repeated assurances that Tennessee would be tough This attitude vanished early in the game But as any athlete knows it is sometimes impossible to snap into it after an apathetic start I do not believe any type of snapping would have availed the Elephants anything today however There is also an outside bility that Mr printed prediction Friday that Alabama would win was swallowed at face value by his puppets Coach Neyland undoubtedly underestimated the intelligence of the public insofar as the stuff is concerned He would have it appear that Tennessee stands slight chance against whatever opponent happens to be next on the list This stimultaed pessimism likely fools nobody But if that is the brand of psychology he used last week in pointing the Vols for the Elephants bring me two orders with a side dish of pachyderm steak That Tennessee has been perfecting a number of so-called climax plays is no longer news which brings up the other item 'r which Neyland merits un-sunted praise Oply one new maneuver so far as this not too close observer could detect was used against the Tide It was the quick opening play on which Cafego broke away for 33 yards This play was designed expressly for employment against sliding line A sliding line as you may know is one that shuffles to the right or to the left according to the formation of the attacking team Tennessee lined up in right formation the Elephants slid accordingly George look the ball and started as though to run off right tackle He advanced one or two steps then cut acutely back to the left of the center There was a hole there wide enough for a Red Elephant to run through the sliding defense ended up sliding foolishly upon thereat of its pants The unexpected brilliance of the jine play and the snatching of a prohibitive 13 point lead made it unnecessary for Neyland to disclose some of the other special dishes he has concocted And if LSU Vanderbilt Kentucky and Ole Miss do not provide more obstinate competition than the Crimson Tide the general public may have to suffer throughout the season without seeing many of pet plays ALL DUE CREDIT A large broad-shouldered gentleman in the press box approached your reporter before the teams had vacated the field following the concluding whistle wish you would pour it on as thick as possible I never saw a football team play as swell a game as Tennessee did today It would be less than justice if they did not receive all the credit in the world A truly great tedm and a truly great coach that he orated is that big the Alabama publicity man was asked that is Jim Ryba our all-American tackle of last he declared A sidellner reported tonight concerning the Cafego Injury: he came over to the sideline and stretched out on the have been smart enough to bee that while Thomas undoubtedly Had a fine country football team a city slicker was turning its water- off for keeps Instead one leather-lunged author announced that missed placement the old ball He believed the stung Red Elephants would turn in their tracks and promptly annihilate the imposters from Tennessee Tide Better In Second Half And Alabama did improve materially the second heat once progressing as far as the U-T 29 This happened while the second team was on the field When the situation began to look cloudy when the defending SEC champions pushed down to the Vol 29 with third down and two feet to go Neyland hurried the first-string primary back into the game This proved disastrous for the Tide Fifteen or twenty orange-attired athletes spanked Bradford down at the line of scrimmage Frustrating the first and one of the few serious touchdown bids Alabama made all afternoon The third period was unpleasant for the home folks because of the return of George Cafego West Virginia citizen who dearly loves to ram his long lengthy tongue out and truck Bradford managed to haul Cafego down after a 20-yard return of the kickoff This put the pigskin on the U-T 26 Leonard Coffman smacked the line for two and at this point George stuck his tongue out a little farther than usual and almost ran out of the stadium One of Best Runs He cut back sharply off right tackle reversing toward the middle of the field Confronted by a mass of Red Jersies he changed direction for the second time then shot high-tailing for the sideline (Continued on F( 4 Cel 3).
