New THE sra WILL ALWAYS SHINE at Cardinal Park-lor Ralph Cox longer can threatening skies obscure the bright-ness 30 minutes before gametime making it necessary lor Ralph to clang shut the steel gates and hang up the sign: No game tonight The memory of the jovial and widely-admired business manager of the Johnson City Cardinals who took the post the first place purely because of a great love for the game will live in the hearts of the faithful few hundred who night after night were greeted with smiles and light chatter byj man who was always on -the job Even in death Ralph Cox was at the ball park closing up for the night ready to retire at a usual II when he by his own choice could have been resting long before that But Ralph Cox was a vibrant man not qnjy in baseball which jsas a sideline but in the political and business world And alongside him seeking to relieve some of the strain which constantly bore on him were his loving wife and children Anne and Tom Ralph loved the little intricacies of baseball He never ceased to be amused and oitentimes seemingly entertained by little gems of humor growing out of his basebaU association One of his closest relationships baseball of course was with Carl A Jones president of the club On many nights after the big lights went out the concessions -stand closed the cushions gathered and the last lingering fans had departed Cox and Jones would huddle in the busy little Cardinal office to discuss the numerous little details of operation and many times to make major decisions on how best to bring good professional baseball to Johnson City fans A conscientious man Ralph Cox felt criticism deeply and was always aware of the link between the caliber of the -ball club and fan pleasure or displeasure On occasions no doubt he felt it futile to go on in the face of ever-mounting attendance problems and the sometimes lethargic support enjoyed by the club But Ralph 'was always the first to say if he felt the club was faltering: blame them for not coming out I either" But Ralph never let gloom engulf him Regardless of the darker moments there vas always the promise of a new player and better performance always the faith that his association with President Jonpg and fheir-cooperative efforts would hurdle the problem The record shows that Ralph Cox weathered the worst period in professional baseball in Johnson City Those that came before Don Dix Andy Schleiffarth Dory Schodle Jerry Brier previous business managers had inconsequential problems compared to those of Cox Following the national trend last attendance dipped to a new low half as many fans as an average season and nearly one third as many as in a peak season The losses were high alarmingly discouraging but Ralph Cox give up He saw the race through and had courage enough to enter 1955 knowing full well that the problems would be weightier and more difficult of solution And they were But down to his final moments Ralph Cox was striving to find the answer to continued professional baseball for Johnson City He was willing to try anything to go to any extreme to con- fans of the inner of the 'game "and the pleasure it could give Ralph CoX was many things his community and in all things he was a tireless worker Hn the game he devoted so much of his time to Ralph Cox was a baseball man through and through I always detected a note of disappointment in his voice when he called up and said- Jimmy the called off It was as if something had escaped that be recalled But now there are no more postponements for Ralph Cox entered the "ball where the gates are ever open and the Great Umpire forever says: "Play QUESTION ON THE LIPS of fans all ovep the country is: Can Ted Williams and the amazing Red Sox go all the way If they do for certain that Williams will go down in baseball history as a man of magic Not that Williams been somewhat uncanny in the past but if he can power the Red Sox to the American League pennant this season Williams will take on a new role one that been associated with the Williams name in the past so much of great teamwork ability and knack of inspiring others to some of the feft he himself has accomplished I like to think of Ted in his new role as a man with hs marital troubles ironed out and ready to inspire youngsters ptiytng with him to greater heights rather than the arrogant sportswriter-baiting Williams been painted in the past Even if they do it the Bed Sox have put new life into the American League chase something rather amiss the neighboring Nations League where the
