Most female characters on TV are still young, white and singlo careor woman, the commission said in a report. But "that profile is losing some dominance, as working class females and women in nonprofessional jobs are beginning to inch their way back on the screen after disappearing for more than a decade." The report said that while women appear regularly in 90 percent of all shows on the complete 1987-88 TV schedule, the number of women appearing regularly In the new shows "marks a sharp downturn." Of 43 leading roles in the new shows, 36 are men and seven are women, the report said.

One in five of the new shows has no female characters. Some 57 percent of all new shows have no regular women characters or feature them in supporting roles, tho report said. Also, two-thirds of the children in single-parent homes on the new shows live with men, while "in the real world, 90 percent live with their mothers," said Alexis Herman, commission chairwoman. The report also said "stark examples of stereotyping persist" in the new shows. It cited as un example tho premiere episode of NBC's "My Two Dads," a situation comedy in which two men share custody of a 12-year-old girl.

In one scene of that show, in a judge's chambers, a female lawyer rebuffs her client's advances, saying, "You take a professional relationship to bed and you know what you become?" Before the client can respond, the 50-year-old female judge says, "I myself became the appellate judge of the Fifth District Court. It only took six minutes and now I'm a judge." Actress Betty Thomas of "Hill Street Blues," who serves on the commission and spoke at a commission luncheon Tuesday, urged women to protest this kind of dialogue. "With sexual harassment in the workplace at an all-time high, and a minuscule percentage of women serving as judges, Hollywood deserves to know what you think of this sick humor," she said. At the luncheon, the commission presented its annual broadcast awards honoring excellence in portraying working women's issues. In the TV entertainment category, the winner was NBC's "L.A.

Law," for an episode in which an anchorwoman is fired after publicizing her mastectomy. Second-place went to CBS' "Kate and Allie" for an episode in which the two women launch a catering business. The presentation to the Dallas County grand jury began at 1 p.m. CST Wednesday, according to a spokeswoman in the office of Assistant District Attorney Hugh Lucas. Lucas coordinated presentation of the evidence to the grand jury. Another spokeswoman in Lucas's office Wednesday said the grand jury would not make its decision on whether to indict Bowie until its next session next Wednesday. The grand jury may choose to indict the singer-actor or to dismiss the complaint.

Neither Bowie, who has not been charged or arrested on the complaint, nor his attorney, James Linn of Oklahoma City, was in Dallas to attend the grand jury session. Lucas said earlier that the grand jury would hear evidence from police officers as well as the woman who filed the complaint, Wanda Nichols, 30, of Dallas. Nichols and her attorney, Robert M. Rose, could not be reached for comment on the grand jury proceedings. Nichols filed the criminal complaint against Bowie, 40, on Oct.
