William Mahar, 60,. Fatally Stricken Death came suddenly last night to a Troy man as he was attending a wake at 2 East Sunnyside. William Mahar, 60, of 24 Second Avenue, was pronounced dead by Dr. John H. F.

Coughlin, after he was stricken at the home of Mrs. George C. Williams, who died Monday at St. Mary's Hospital. Hoseman James Howard and Charles Tillotson of Central Fire Station used the depart- ment inhalator In an attempt to revive the man.

They -were summoned to the house at p.m. Anthony E. Matera, Rensselaer County coroner, investigated and gava a decision of death due to natural causes. Mr. Mahar was a native of Albany, but had resided in Troy for the last 12 years.

He was a member of St. Patrick's Church and had been employed at the Menands Public Market. HIKING CLUB PLANS FOR TRIP TO I The Taconic Hiking Club of Troy will sponsor a hike to Mt. Graylock in the on Sunday. Members will climb the Hopper Trail.

Tibbits Of Albany As Assailant An Albany man who committed suicide last night at his home, was dentified by police as the person who threatened a Latham woman at knifepoint and forced her to jump from a moving truck at Maxwell and Old Niskayuna Roads about 10:25 a.m. yesterday. Police said the man was Trafford Tibbits, 29, formerly of 19 Maple Avenue, Slingerlands.

He end- id his life at his home, 436 Clinton Avenue. Tibbits. authorities claim, attacked and stabbed two young omen near Delmar in July, 1946. Within hours after Mrs. Edith S.

Lewis, 42, 114 Old Loudon Road, Latham, -was found sprawled in Maxwell Road near the Old Niska- una Road police were summoned the Clinton address. Tibbits was found with his head the oven of the kitchen gas in his apartment. Coroner Trank C. O'Connor gave a decision of suicide by illuminating gas. Tibbits, police said, served a year -erm in the Albany County Jail for attack upon Marilyn P.

Her condition today was eported as "fairly comfortable" by hospital authorities. Authorities said Tibbita on July 10, 1946, offered a. ride to two young Long- Island women who were visiting for the summer at a farm at Greenville, Greene County. Tibbits, it is alleged, drove to a lonely road in the vicinity of Delmar and threatened them with a hunting knife. He tied the hands of Miss Timms and ordered Miss Peters from, the truck, A short distance away from the parked truck he attempted to disrobe the younjf woman and when ha was interrupted by a passing motorist returned to the truck.

Miss Timnis, who had freed her hands, grabbed a wrench and struck him on the head. He attacked both women with a. knife inflicting a number of chest wounds. Within two hours after the attack Tibbits State Police and subsequently was sent to the Albany County Jail, Tihhjt had never been arrested previous to this time and had a remarkable record in World War II. PHELAN, ACTIVE IN CHURCH WORK, SUCCUMBS IN HOSPITAL Mrs. Helen Noonan Phelan, former president of the Women's Auxiliary of LaSalle Institute, died last night at the Leonard Hospital following a long illness. Phelan was the widow of John J. Phelan, a chemical engineer at the General Electric Co plant, Schenectady, for many years. A native of Hoosick Falls, Mrs. Phelan ame to Troy at an early age, residing in St. Patrick's parish.

She later moved to Waterford where she -was active in St. Mary' Church. For the last nine years she resided at 709 Second Avenue was active in St. Augustine 1 Church, and was a member of the Mothers' Club of St. Augustine's School.

Surviving are four sons, John William, Ned 'and Charles Phelan all of Troy; sister, Mrs. T. Ed ward Russell of New York; two brothers, John Noonan of Buffalo and Edward Noonan of Albany; five grandchildren, Billy, John Howard, Jackie and Gary Phelan The funeral will be held from the William A. Toohey Funeral Home, Second Avenue and 114th Street, at 9 a.m. Friday and at 9:30 a.m.
