(UPI) Randy Matson, the world's premier shot putter, cracked hi own world record by almost a foot Saturday, tossing the shot, 71 feet 5V4 inches before a crowd that had come to honor him on "Randy Matson That happening took place just over five years ago on April 22, 1967, and Saturday another great athlete stepped down. Matson, the 1968 Olympic Gold medalist, hinted he would retire after placing fourth in the Olympic trials. Only the top three will represent the United States in the Olympics in Munich, and Matson, who has dominated his specialty as no one ever or probably ever, will not be among them.

"I see no reason for staying in shape and throwing," the 6-foot-6, 270-pound Matson after completing the eveift at the trials in Eugene, Ore. "I'm not improving. My timing is off," he continued. The loss was a stunning one to most observers and even Matson said before the meet that if he lost it would not be as embarassing as if he had lost in the 1968 games. Matson's fall was met by two men, Al Feurbach and George Woods of the Pacific Coast Track Club.

Feurbach had bested Matson nearly every time in the indoor season and in doing so became the second man ever to throw the shot 70 feet. Matson was the first. Then along came Woods. He became the third 70-foot shot putter and another challenger to Matson. But they were only two and Randy would surely get no worse than third.

On Friday he led the qualifying with a toss of 69 feet Inches and looked as if he might make it back for his third Olympiad. It was eight years before as a college freshman at Texas ASM Matson had taken the Silver Medal. Even if Matson has tossed his last shot just as the records of Stan Musial, Jim Brown and Bob Pettit, his legend will stay on. Two years before he heaved the round ball more than 71 feet.he had broken the 70-foot barrier" as an Aggie sophomore. That throw of 70 feet 7 inches still exists today, as the Southwest Conference record.

He also holds the NCAA discus record or 213 feet. Matson was not just a track men. He was a high school AIl-American in football and basketball at Pampa High School. In the 1965-66 basketball season he took time off to become a major asset on Shelby Metcalf Aggie basketball team that finished second in the conference. There weren't many people around with the willpower or the strength to go up with the Aggie giant.

But after leaving school, Randy married and is now the father of two children. And raising that family was of course put ahead of his athletic endeavors. Shot putting was no longer a full-time job. He is now the executive director of the West Texas State Booster Club. But for those four, nearly five years, since Randy completed his eligibility and turned down offers from pro football and basketball be still was on top.

In the indoor season of 1971 Feurbach emerged. He didn't have a job. He worked full-time with the shot. He had one goal in mind. To beat Randy Matson.

This season he did. Matson is no longer king of his game. Neither is Willie Mays, Bart Stair or Oscar Robertson. All in their prime were on top and after they retire they will be remembered. Randy won't be going to Munich this year but his 71 feet 5V4 inch throw of April 22, 1967, is still tops until that day.
