i While everybody hopes that no player will ever be injured school officials should be prepared to meet the worst should it arrive. There was a lengthy delay in getting Wilbern Presswood, i. Apache back, off the field after the gridder was injured. he could be carried, from the field the Apache team 20 juniors and seniors and between 35-40 sophomores. One letterman will be back from last year's fine team.

He is John Dickey, a senior. Dickey was not a starter last year, but saw considerable service as a relief man and was considered as a regular. Eleven squadmen, all juniors, from last year's team will also be back. They are Larry Krum, Jack Burnett, Buddy Nolley, John Tyler, George Winn, George Webb, Charles Schneider, Bobby Rasber-ry, Bobby Parker, Randall Purvis and Bentley Black. The remainder of the boys extracted out are inexperienced as far as high school basketball is concerned.

A basketball program in the junior high schools will also be worked out. Carpenter says a meeting with the junior high coaches will be held during the coming week to outline plans. The Lion schedule is indefinite at the present time, but Carpenter plans to get busy right away lining up opponents. Some games are already tentatively arranged. The Lions will play two games each with Longview and Gladewater on a home and home basis, but the dates have not been settled.

They will also enter the Kilgore tournament December 13, 14 and 15. The district schedule will begin after the Christmas holidays, with the first game to be played against Texarkana. 28th 4 Weeks of Competition Time Trials Start Promptly at 2 P.M. manager had to rush off down by the dressing rooms to find something to carry him off the field on. All the manager could find was a long plank. That was covered with a blanket and Presswood was carried off the field on the piece of scrap lumber. Thert was further delay in getting him to the hospital as the manager had to rush up to i the press box and ask for an.

ambulance to be called to come to the field and pick up the in-jured player. At Gladewater Friday night, Donal Vaughn of the Bears was hurt and had to remain on the field until someone could -rush out of the stadium to summon an ambulance and until the ambulance arrived to carry him to the hospital. No plank was broken out at Gladewater, but neither was a stretcher. The injured boy had to bt left on the field until the ambulance arrived. Fortunately, neither Press-wood or Vaughn were seriously injured and the delay did no real harm.

Some time in the future, however, a waiting stretcher and ambulance might actually save a boy's life. Taking note of Thursday night's experience at Rose Stadium, Tyler High officials had an ambulance at the field for the first time this season. The officials say Tyler High, official owner of Rose Stadium, will have a stretcher in the dressing room for use at all junior college, high school, junior high, and any other games to be played at the stadium in the future. THE PREMIER OIL Refining Company is to be commended for its new program of offering a trophy each year to the Gregg County school having the most outstanding record in all sports. Schools eligible are Kilgore, Gladewater, Longview, Judson, Pine Tree, Spring Hill, Whi'e Oak and Sabine.

Most folks will agree that most PAYNE of the emphasis is put on the two major sports, football and basketball, in Texas high schools and that baseball, tennis, golf, and track are shoved back out of the limelight. Trophies such as the one being awarded by Premier will tend to give credit to schools and athletes in the minor sports, and maybe in time they will be recognized as major sports, too. Certainly it takes as much skill and practice time to be a track star or tennis star as it does to play good football or basketball. Actually the minor sport athletes are to, be admired more than the major sport athletes. The reason is that they have to work hard and yet they get none of the glory accorded football and basketball stars.

The minor sports athletes have to really want to compete more than the major sport athletes because they do not reap the rewards. The all-sports trophy in Gregg County is certainly a step in the right direction. Maybe the day will soon come when all-sport trophies can be awarded all over Texas, whether the division be made by counties or by Inter-scholastic League districts. A FAMILIAR sports figure in Tyler is celebrating his golden wedding anniversary today. He's "Cap" Fred Morris and congratulations are in order front sports fans.

Morris played on the very first Tyler High School football team and later managed and played catcher for the famous Cotton Belt baseball team that traveled around the nation winning ball games.
