With 3 Hits 6-0 Tiger Pitcher Also Hits Horn er as Bengals Increase Loop Lead to Eight Full Contests DETROIT Aug 18 UP) Schoolboy Rowe pitching the brand of baseball that made him the sensation of the American league in 1934 turned back the New York Yankees with three hits today as the Detroit Tigers scored a 6-0 victory and lengthened their lead in the American league pennant race to eight games In addition to blanking the second" First MEMPHIS Aug Babe Ben-nrng broke up the longest ball game in the history of Russwood park today when he hit a home run with two out in the 17th inning to beat Knoxville 4 to 3 The 1935 Southern league record for extended battling also was shattered but as an amazing anti-climax a second game was started at 6 05 which the Chicks finally won in almost total darkness at 710 by the score of 4 to 1 The first game was by far the greatest unreeled in modern Southern league history so far as Memphis is concerned It had everything that goes to make a thriller tight pitching hitting the pmch great pitching on the part of Jim Henry of the Chicks and Ray Moss of the Smokies relief rolls and finally homer Just when it looked as though the teams would go into the 18th Babe connected with one of Moss fast balls The missle went on a line over the centerfield fence and Babe trotted the bases with half of his teammates accompanying him from third base to the plate and all of them surrounding him and beating his back at the finish while a crowd of 5000 yelled themselves hoarse in a tumult of excitement Henry third Chick pitcher had to labor nine full innings to gain his 16th victory of the season Jim followed Ed Greer and Joe Boward to the mound relieving IJoward with the bases full and two out in the eighth and fanning pinch hitter Joe Brown- He worked himself into holes and out of them in a manner that had the crowd decidedly on edge Except for that one blow of Moss had an edge on Henry the pitching department Old Ray had relieved another veteran Leo Moon when Moon was hit on the hand by a line drive by Benning in the eighth inning The Smokies collected 20 hits all mne off Henry and the Chicks 14 five off Moss PAUL BONNER FEATURES Skipper Fred Hofmann had the good fortune to tie the ball game with a single as a pinch hitter in the seventh inning and the bad fortune to be put out of the game for protesting a decision of Umpire Steamboat in the eighth He saw the rest of the game from some hidden nook but he must have been pulling the strings of the strategy with the able assistance of Clay Touchstone pitching performance was really dramatic Eight Smokies fanned before his blazing fast balls three of them in what is generally known as The Smokies had men on base in every inning from the eighth through the 17th except the 13th The Chicks produced only two real threats off Moss once leaving a runner stranded at second with one out and once having Johnny Watwood thrown out at the plate on an attempted steal Paul Bonner who collected the astounding total of seven hits the two games started- the Smokies to their first run the first by singling He came home on Lee double In the second Bert triple and Bunny single put the Smokies ahead 2 to 0 and in the fifth Bonner's double infield hit and a double play brought Paul home again It was the last Smoky run The Chicks got to Moon for two in the fifth Watwood opened with a single scored on Leo double and Kintana registered on double but the Chicks send Powell around DARKNESS ROBS SMOKIES Then old Freddie Hofmann waved his willow to knot the count in the seventh Kintana singled for a starter and was sacrificed to second by Powell Hoffmann went up to swing for Greer and bit the first pitch to left field for a single with Kmtana coasting across the plate And there was Benning to win it for Henry Shadows were falling when the nghtcap started and neither fielders nor spectators could see the ball when it finished And it was lucky for the Chicks that Umpire Johnson decided to go into the sixth inning For when the five innings required to make a game legal had expired the Chicks were trailing 1 to 0 and Lyn Nelson the new twirler By MARVIN 1 CTK Hop THOMSON 4 4 NEW YORK Aug 18 UP) Hank Leiber who was in such a hitting slump a few days ago that he was benched while his mates were engaged in a crucial struggle with the St Louis Cardinals came out of it with a whoop today made four hits and led the league leaders to an 8-4 victory -f over the Cincinnati Reds Hank smacked his 17th home run of the season two doubles and a triple in five trips to the plate as the Giants belted Leroy Herrmann and Silas Johnson for 15 hits Travis Jackson was right behind him at the plate hitting three singles drawing a walk and making a sacrifice AH this pounding made it easy for Carl Hnbbell to ring up his 17th victory but Don Carlos did his own share at the plate by smacking a circuit blow The Reds tossed in a pair of errors that gave the league leaders unearned runs in the second and eighth frames Hubbell after pitching shutout ball for seven frames weakened in the eighth and the Reds scored all their runs Three of them came on Billy Sullivan's circuit smack with two aboard Lew triple sent Adam Comorosky with the fourth Results Chattanooga 4 New Orleans 3 Atlanta 5-3 Little Rock 3-2 Nashville 1 Birmingham 2 (second game rained a sparkling display of singles skill to make it five straight over Great Britain in defense of the international trophy yesterday at Forest Hills The margin of victory was thin 4 to 3 in two play but
