sure-cure coming up a week from today hits the Tri-Cities area as the time draWs near for the first Volunteer 500 automobile race at Bristol International Speedway Racing fever is common among people who just wait to get to a track to see the big automobiles go 'round and 'round The only thing that can alleviate the condition is to "go to the races" And that's where some 21000 persons will be going next Sunday to see the inaugural of bigtime auto racing in this area Governor Buford Ellington put the icing on the affair by declaring this week Volunteer 500 Racing Week in Tennessee Interest has been steadily building up in the Volunteer 500 A look at the entry list which will be completed by tomorrow night shows most of the big names of auto racing Roberts Cotton Owens Joe Weatherly Ned Jarrett Junior Johnson Fred Lorenzen Buck Baker Joe Lee Johnson Dave Pearson and a host of others For an area that is considered fairly new to bigtime racing Johnson City has the distinction of being second only to Spartanburg in the number of entries in the Volunteer 500 Three drivers from Johnson City will seek spots in the starting field in qualifying They are Herman Beam George Green and Paul Lewis Other area drivers will compete including Laymon Utsman of Bluff City Bill Morton of Church Hill and Sherman Utsman of Bluff City The owners of Bristol International Speedway are to be commended for constructing such a fine racing plant in an area where so many people have indicated an interest in racing Until now most area people have had to drive hundreds sometimes thousands of miles to see the type of racing entertainment that is now in our midst It appears that this is still another indication that the once Tittle" cities of the country are coming into their own in putting on bigtime attractions Of course only with fabulous support can such attractions as the Volunteer 500 the Redskins and Eagles and Hawks and Warriors be brought to us rather than force us to go to them Track Manager Hal Hamrick pointed out for instance that "between 700 and 800 employes" will be necessary to put on the Volunteer 500 at Bristol International Speedway The overhead plus purse money which is estimated to run between $16000 and $17000 is tremendous for a race of this caliber However the reception thus far has been gratifying indeed Hamrick says and it looks like everybody and his cousin will be on hand when the Volunteer 500 gets under way at 1 30 next Sunday Many of course will be on hand to see the Saturday qualifying when some of the most exciting action could occur Big Spenders And Big Doers THE WORLD may not be divided into two camps the big spenders and the big doers but sometimes I have a feeling it is Baseball for instance has its big spenders and its big doers Ridiculous bonuses to untried rookies have threatened to bankrupt the whole structure of organized baseball With the gradual tightening of the noose around the minor leagues the big league bosses forced themselves into the spender" market tossing $100000 here $75000 there and $50000 somewhere else Bob Carpenter owner of the Phillies is a good example of a big spender in basebalL Phillies were the ones who paid the Haines Brothers and Ray Culp ridiculous sums of money to sign contracts Yet Carpenter now possesses one of the loudest voices in the game against the spending trend And the Phillies are riding in the damp dark National League basement proving once again what Carpenter now knows you spend your way into a pennant In fact it can land you downstairs mighty quickly The long-suffering Boston Red Sox are also prime examples of a lot of good money being thrown after bad green At best of course baseball is a gamble for big league owners Nobody can be assured that today's $100000 bonus pitcher can win tomorrow The trouble though stems from the fact that (1) the majors just cannot afford to continue spending such huge sums and (2) even If they- could it good 4nr a "ming man to get the Idea so early in life that merely his ability to play a game well in his own locale is license to demand thouands of dollars In advance because of some excellence attained with some other outfit other than the one he's hoping to join at a fabulous figure Baseball men themselves have complained about the rush to oblivion Many acknowledge that if they ran their own businesses like they do their baseball clubs go broke fast' Yet each club is afraid to be the first to withdraw from the money race The big spenders keep spending but the real baseball accomplishments are being made by shrewd students of the game who look at the bonus checks to discover if their boy can play ball or not Ironically despite the claims of some of baseball's big spenders that still worth it because of the few bonus boys who do make good true that a great number of highly paid bonus babies never learn to walk in the do-it world of baseball Also Ironic Is the fact that many of these boys actually were big league material in potential ability but the money itself destroyed their initiative and eagerness for the game The Johnson City Cardinals face he Harlan Smokies at 130 todjy at Cardinal Park doubleheader 1 The scheduled single game with the Harlan club here last night was washed out by the late afternoon thunderstorm Postponement of the contest caused quite a bit of concern to the Cardinal management winch has been cooperating in an effort to avoid conflict with the of the Day" the majors by playing its Sunday games at after conclusion of the of the However Business Manager Joe Lucco said the Cardinals decio'ed to play the doubleheader at 1 30 rather than start a double-header at 4 which would conflict with church services The second game would not be under way until as late as 6 '30 or possibly 7 pm Contrary to some belief in the past there is no Sunday curfew here Lucco said he was informed by city officials However Lucco said despite a desire to avoid conflict with the major league of the the Cardinals did not wish nor anticipate playing any Sunday night games Lucco did say that the present policy of playing Sunday single games at 4 to cooperate with television and radio broadcasts would continue want to do what we honestly feel is correct and proper in Clay Scores 8tli Straight Ring Success LOUISVILLE Ky (AP) Cassius Clay a newcomer to the
