from the Conference which is now held by the Secretary-Treasurer The resignation has not been acted upon The Commissioner did not receive from Appalachian State Teachers College eligibility certificates for its football players The Commissioner Is of the opinion that Appalachian i State Teachers College Is a member of the Conference until the Conference decides whether or not the resignation will be accepted Fourteen players at King College were heretofore ruled ineligible from the beginning of the season King College wrote the Commissioner that these fourteen men included their best players King College was asked to report their games and also whether or not they had played any ineligible players This institution was asked to mail the report not later than November 29 College to wit: State Teacher College Maryville College Milligan College and Cumberland University Neither Appalachian State Teachers College nor King College sent in a report Lincoln Memorial University did not have a football team From the foregoing the Commissioner Is of the opinion that Carson-Newman College was represented by -the championship football team for the football season of 1939 and that the ratings of the various institutions are the order above named It is therefore ruled by the Commissioner that Carson-Newman College have counted as wins its games against Appalachian State Teachers College and King College that other member institutions have counted for them as wins the games against King College as above set forth that Carson-Newman College was represented by the Middies their 15th victory by a score of 10-0 Before a crowd of 104000 an annual number since the service schools moved their series into this tremendous arena 200 pound Cliff Lenz drove through and around an out-charged Army line to put the Sailors in position for a first period field goal Then Bob Leonard kicked that field goal from the 25-yard stripe and the same Bob Leonard booted the extra point after Dick Shafer had scored a third quarter touchdown These three claimed the share of the offensive spoils But they had to share credit for the fine work with four of their mates Ulmont Whitehead Ed Gillette Wes Gebert and Lou Mayo who transformed supposedly weak pass defense into an impassable barrier They gave Navy almost as much yardage on runbacks of intercepted aerials- as Arrhy for him The from Gainesville Texas stayed in for just one play He went back to the 25-yard line and with Whitehead holding the ball kicked it square between the uprights 35 yards away even though he was aiming from a considerable angle Came the third period and Navy started rolling again Lenz making one of the five interceptions ran the ball back 18 yards to 47 Following a punt exchange and the
