Food, Toiletries Going At Premium Among Britishers Food and toiletries are going at a premium in England. Here's a good reason for the presumption: Foster Blalsdell, superintendent of parks and recreation here, was only a few weeks ago with the Red Cross in While in the service, he had been receiving a package each week from his wife. Upon leaving London for the States he instructed his former staff members to open any package he might receive and offer it to the Duke of Gloucester and St. Johns Red Cross Fund for prisoners of war, that proceeds might be gained for that organization through sale to the highest bidder. This week Blaisdell received a letter from his former secretary there advising that three Jars of preserves and one bottle of shaving lotion had arrived addressed to him, and that said Items had been disposed of as he had advised.

Enclosed were receipts for 1 pound, 17 shillings for lo tion and 3 pounds, 10 shillings for preserves an amount equal in standard exchange to $21.40. Blalsdell conjectured that the articles were disposed of on a lottery basis, with one shilling the probable price for each chance. Anyway, such things must be quite in demand (Blaisdell re ports that lotions can hardly be bought at all), and the donor seems more than pleased that the necessities intended for him have proved the means for more aid to those in greater need than he.
