Tuesday, Si'ptemher 18,1973 Packers Triumph .MII.U.AUKEE (UPl) —Tlif Giwn Bay Packers capitalized on erroi-s by the New Yoik Jets and held off Joe Naniath's passing attack to poll to a 23-7 Victory in their nationally- televised National Football League opener Monday night. The Packers turned one Jets fumble into a touchdown and another into one of Chester Marcol's three field goals, and got another touchdown after intercepting a Namath pass. In the battle billed as a struggle between the Packers' pass defense and Namath's aerial attack, Green Bay came out on top even though the Jets quarterback totaled 203 yards through the air. Namath got the Jets to the Packers 34-yard line on his first drive but the Packers defense didn't let the Jets get past the 50 after that until late in the fourth quarter. Al Woodall finally took New York in for its only score of the game on a ITyard touchdown pass to David Knight with half a minute left in the game. Marcol opened the scoring with a nine-yard field goal with 45 seconds left in the first quarter after the Jets halted a 78-yard Green Bay drive on the two-yard line. Neither team moved the ball in the second quarter until the Packers drove in for a touchdown on a 19-yard pass from Scott Hunter to Rich McGeorge with 1:55 left in the half. The Packers had gotten the ball when Jim Hill recovered a fumble by Rich Caster. New York failed to move the ball on the next series. The Packers then moved into field goal range where Marcol made it 13-0 with a 37-yarder as time ran out in the half. It was the first time the Jets had gone scoreless for a half since they were shut out 20-0 by New England in November 1971.
