FOOTBALL-A RESULTS BY MISSISSIPPI STATE 13 TO 7 Southerners Tumble Cadets From Ranks of Unbeaten Before 20000 Fans WEST POINT Nov 2 Army victor over Harvard and Yale on successive days was tumbled from the ranks of the football undefeated today by a fighting band of Southerners from Mississippi State who ran and passed their way to a 13-7 victory While an estimated crowd of 20000 looked on stunned silence the football warriors -of Major Ralph Sasse drove to a touchdown early in the first period and then connected with two long passes in the fourth period to clinch the victory ARMY FIGHTS HOPELESSLY Army which had hoped to save something for the three hard games ahead against Pittsburgh Notre Dame and Navy threw all its resources into the fray without avail The Cadets were able to match first touchdown with a passing attack in the second quarter but their desperate efforts in the waning minutes of the game found them steadily losing ground against fierce defense The Southerners trotted out one of the fastest hardest most accurate passing backfields the Army had looked at this year Ike Pickle a 177-pound string Dean back from Memphis Tenn was a threat every time be carried the ball It was his 21 and 25-yard runs in the first period which set up the Army for Bill lethal plunge from the four-yard line fbr the score THREE BACKS STAR Not far behind in ability were Fred Hight of Koscuisko Miss Bob Hardison from the same town and Charles Armstrong of Jackson Miss They harassed the Army flanks all afternoon and when stopped there slipped through the line for good gains or tossed unerring forwards to each other and the ends It was accurate tossing to Fred Walters substitute end from Laurel Miss which brought the last touchdown With the ball on 20 the Armstrong-Walters pass was good for 16 yards and on the very next -play he arched a high one which Walter took over his shoulder on 35 to dance down the sidelines to a score MONK MEYER HALTED Monk Meyer who was born at West Point and is the star was well bottled up most of the afternoon by the fast stepping State ends and backs who threw him for losses on several of his attempted end sweeps and intercepted three of his hurried passes Meyer and Ralph King regular quarterback from Buffalo tossed 15 passes during the course of the afternoon but except for the second period drive for a touchdown to display their Southwest brand of football the Rice Owls from Texas spoiled George homecoming celebration and romped easily to a 41 to 0 triumph over the Colonials before 15000 spectators With their touchdown twins John McCauley and Bill Wallace running wild and their replacements stepping just as fancily the Owls scored in every period and halted several George Washington threats with stubborn goal line stands The Texans used up just about every possible way to vary their avenues of scoring hanging up two touchdowns on long runs one on a pass another on an intercepted pass and two more as a today to score two touchdowns and remain in the undefeated class by vanquishing the hitherto unbeaten University of California at Los Angeles 14 to 2 before 80000 The victory put California out in front in the Pacific Coast conference race Fred foot gave UCLA its first opportunity early in the game The big halfback sent a long punt to the California two-yard line When Don Fowler was chased back over the goal line and tackled by Chavoor a safety was scored against the visitors The Bears never got into UCLA territory until the second period when a fumble gave California the ball on 47-yard line Floyd Blower kicked to five-yard line and Cheshire returned the kick 25 yards A fumble lost 15 yards and Funk went back to the five-yard line to kick Lutz broke through to block the attempt and Vard Stockton picked the ball up and ran for a touchdown Henry Sparks added the extra point with a placement The Bears were placed in position to score the last counter when Her-wig intercepted a pass in midfield in the final period and ran to 40-yard line After picking up four yards' at the line Blower passed to Jack Bnttmgham who ran for a touchdown and Sam Chapman kicked the point Lineups and sweet pair of backs Honey Hackney and Ace Parker two of the best ball carriers in the Southern conference the Blue Devils brought a happy climax to Duke's homecoming program and dealt out misery to ambitious eleven this afternoon by smashing over and around the Volunteers for a convincing 19-to-6 victory It gave the rejuvenated Blue Devils their first decision in the last three starts and sounded their hearty approval of Wallace new five-year coaching contract signed almost on the eve of battle A crowd of 15000 hilarious homecoming fans sprinkled by Tennessee rooters saw the job well done The Blue Devils were a great team today They had to be to vanquish the best eleven Tennessee has placed on the field during the current campaign The Orangemen flashed their most potent offense since Labor day their pass defense was the best of the season and outgained the Blue Devils from the line of scrimmage 337 yards to 307 But they didn't have a Honey Hackney to deliver in the pinch and they have an Ace Parker to boot the ball far down the field when danger loomed in the background CAPITALIZES ON BREAKS The Dukemen perhaps spurred on by thousands of old grads who were yelling lustily for victory took advantage of every break that occurred from the opening kickoff to the final whistle Two of them were directly responsible for touchdowns Tennessee on the other hand saw the hand of fate move against it on every turn and was forced to march down the field a beautiful 54-yard drive for its lone touchdown But Duke would have won today under almost any condition and deserved the victory Wallace Wade pronounced today's performance the best his team has dished out all season and was high in his praise of the vanquished Tennessee eleven Maj Bill Britton thought his Orangemen reached the peak this afternoon and would have made a much hotter battle of it (Continued on Page 5 CoL 1) First downs Net yards grained rushing Forward passes attempted Forward passes completed COLUMBUS liov 2 In a melodramatic finish that has had few parallels in college football history the Fighting Irish of Notre Dame soared back to the heights today with an aerial attack that si- multaneously snatched victory from apparent defeat and shattered the (national championship dreams of Ohio famed "Scarlet The final score was 18 to 13 as Notre Dame came from behind in the final period to score three touchdowns barely miss a fourth and leave 81108 tremendously excited spectators literally limp There was only one period to play when "Handy Andy" Pilney of Chicago hero of the dazzling uphill fight to triumph touched off the fireworks that turned the tide There was a scant five mmutes left when Notre desperate aerial bid for' the tying touchdown failed a yard short of the Ohio goal because of a fumble MILLNER GRABS PASS The Irish fought back again but there was less than a full minute to play when big Wayne Millner crack Notre Dame end pulled down a long pass from Bill Shakespeare in the end zone for the deciding touchdown that wiped out the last vestige of Ohio State's first half lead Throughout the last thrilling quarter with defense crumbling rapidly under the stabbing aeriai thrusts of the Irish Pilney was the electrifying factor in the surge of a team that simply refused to be licked The speedy little 26-yard return of a punt and 12-yard pass to Francis Gaul set the stage for Steve Millner to plunge the remaining yard for Notre first touchdown early in the final period PLACE-KICK FAILS fumble recovered by Ohio State at the goal line for a touchback nullified the next aerial drive engineered by Pilnev from midfield but the Irish refused to be discouraged They swooped back 79 yards through the air for a sec- ond touchdown with Pilney on the receiving end of one long pass good for 37 yards and tossing to Mike I Layden with the ball on 15 for the score Wally failure to place-kick the extra point needed to tie the score looked fatal The end of the game was in sight but Notre Dame had one big punch left Aided by a "break' near mid-field where Henry Pojman substitute center recovered a fumble by Dick Beltz Ohio halfback Pilney launched the decisive drive with a twisting 32-yard run through a broken field to 19 WILD DEMONSTRATIONS They carried Pilney off the field with a pulled leg tendon after he was brought down fiercely by tacklers near the side line but the Irish had another sharpshooter Shakespeare whose kicking was a big factor throughout the game faded back to 38-yard line and let go the pass that broke up the ball game reasonably expecting to earn a deadlock but It bowled Louisiana State further along the road toward the Southeastern title Auburn barely threatened but in the second period came within a yard of a touchdown when Kilgore taking a short pass from Hitchcock who was on his 27 raced down the left sideline to the Louisiana four-yard marker and then cracked the line for three more The study Louisiana
