She says I'm too young; but my jest friend is even younger. Mother says I should go to the opera, but whoever heard of a teenager nowadays going to an opera? Today she marie me bring an umbrella to school and il wasn't even raining; the sun was out. Calls Mother i Peeping Tom Last evening I was outside our building with friends and one ol the boys started smoking. Immediately mother was calling oul the window — "Betty, don't you think it's time to come upstairs?' situation, Nobody else's mother was call ing in their precious babies at 8:30 p. m,; it sounded as iC I were summoned to bod. I put up a fuss to stay out ; little longer, and soon we starlei playing hide-and-seek. While I was hiding, mother came out telling the other kids 1 had to g< upstairs because there was schoo next day! As if they didn't have school also! I figured 1 had to go in then and on Ihe way up 1 noticed ; wooden spoon in her right hand She didn't dare hit me outside— but when we got upstairs! Sin had some crazy excuse that s neighbor was sick; and I was making too much noise. Th neighbor was sick for two weeks —but is well now. Then she asked if I'd been smoking and I said "No"—whicl was Die truth. Anyway, I'd pretty brave to smoke in front our building—especially as moth er is a Pepping Tom. Please help me. B. K. Girl's Attitude Is Narroic-HIinileil DEAR B. K.: Do you reallj want help? Or just sympathelii backing In doing as you please? It would be a case (the tragii classic case) of the blind leading the blind—all running the risk o ending in the gutter—if you wer to freely follow the example o unsheperded kids in the street, as supposed models of smart up- to-date teen-age behavior. Your mother, as described, sounds like a stand-out individual. a genuine somebody in the neighborhood picture—an "original" who does her own thinking. I Evidently your dad respects her •wisdom—her judgment, insight [and savvy, lie's seen a lot more jot lifo than you have; and takes the easy way of letting her boss the tough, long-term, thankless job of trying to help you across the goal-line into adulthood, in igood condition. Not damaged, j dirtied or otherwise rendered isecond-rate by booby mistakes in transit. Rock-and-RoH Isn't The Most \Vbocver beard of a teen-ager nowadays going lo an opera? ell, I've heard of a lot of them —in the belter private prep chools and colleges—going to iperas, concerts, art galleries nid such; and taking Ihe expert- nee in stride, as a routine aspect if gctling educated in the var- ous-ness of lite. The fact that you can't imagin* ourself respecting teen-agers at- ending the opera, and consider ock-and-roll Ihe very end (1 bc- ieve that's the phraso?) shows ioiv narrow is your mind at pres- and how limited your con- "epl of sophistication. Perhaps 'our mother got a hotter break— ;rew up in surroundings where 'the larger life" was jnorc dear- y apparent. Stay Within Law Of Love Now for advice. Your attitude owards your mother is wrong, and dangerous for you, in the sense that it places you outside he protective law of love—the inimitable principle of universal good. Your manner is ugly, rejecting, know-it-all; whereas it should be respectful, teachable and affeclionate, even when you 'eel disappointed, uncomfortable, chagrined, etc., al being denied your preference.
