second time in three seasons blocked Duke's university's possible way to the Rose Bowl defeating the Blue Devils today 6 to 0 in one of the outstanding upsets Approximately 10000 spectators were in the stands It was the identical score by which the Tornado swept Duke into the defeat column at the close of 1933 Coach Wallace Wade of the North Carolina squad commenting crisply said: "They (Journal Sports Editor) A resourceful Alabama Crimson Tide eleven smarting under a defeat last Saturday at the hands of Mississippi State ruined a perfect day for nearly 20000 homecoming fans yesterday by smothering the Tennessee Volunteers under a 25-0 score at Shields-Watkins field It was the most humiliating loss the Orange and White has suffered at the hands of Alabama since their annual battle was resumed in 1928 and one of the worst since 1924 Smashing the line with the power of a locomotive sweeping the ends with the speed of a race horse and taking to the air with as much success as a humming bird the Crimson Tide swept to a pair of touchdowns in the first half and duplicated the-f performance in the second half NO DOUBT OF OUTCOME There was never any doubt of the herd for Tennessee to stop Rams Trim Vandy 13-7 In Bitterly Fought TUI 0RTHWESTERN BOWS TO OHIO STATE ELEVEN Greatest Newspaper 4 1 r- 1 Six Hurt Half Dozen Vols Injured in Tide Game Tade Out Three Weeks The loss to Alabama yesterday proved a costly one to the Vols with no less than six varsity members on the injured list Herbie Tade center is perhaps the most serious casualty He was carried from the field with a badly sprained left knee which will probably keep him out for three weeks Dr G' Brashear team physician said last night Tade might be out longer than that time He will be given further examination today It might take a day or two to tell the extent of his injuries Dr Brashear indicated Others hurt in game Include Sonny Humphreys varsity end who has a sprained left knee that will put him on the shelf for a week Frank Craw- ford varsity tackle who received a sprained back but will probably be back at work In a few days Ward Eastman 'reserve quarterback who will be out for about two weeks with a sprained shoulder Harrison Bourkard varsity guard whose sprained back may keep him idle for- two weeks and Joe Black Hayes who also suffered a sprained back that will keep him out of practice for a few days Henry Krouse Johnny Shorty Needham and Bill Murrell already on the list will be inactive for at least another week Dr Brashear said last night Benham Swamps Lynch High 19-0 LYNCH Ky Cct 19 Benham High trounced its deadly rival Lynch here this afternoon 19 to 0 in a fiercely contested battle It was the fifth straight triumph for Benham and the first setback 'of the season for Lynch Neither team was able to register in the first half however Benham came back strong in the second half to push across three touchdowns Sophers pushed the pigskin across twice wtih Thurman registering the other marker Both teams were making a strong bid for the Cumberland Valley conference championship until loss erased Lynch Benham will battle Evarts next Saturday at Benham TCU SMITES TEXAS FORT WORTH Texas Oct-19 UP) Texas Christian University Frogs won their second 1935 Southwest conference football game today by defeating Texas 19 to 14 The Christians scored their" points the first two periods- and the Aggies scored in the third and fourth periods A crowd of 15000 saw the game Both teams engaged in terrific line pounding that sent player 'player from the field with afterward SCORE FOUR TIMES Coach Frank Rose Bowl champions cashed In on four of their six major scoring chances due mainly to a woefully weak Vol defense against passes The Tide mixed a slashing ground attack with their aerial thrust in just the exact mixture to obtain the best results Riley running and passing Charlie passing Rudy Rohr-danz sensational broken field jaunts and Joe slashing slants gave the Crimson Tide an offense diversified enough to beat almost any opponent yesterday i Working together with the ball carriers "was the Alabama line which hurled back every assault at its direction The Alabama forwards dominated line playr although the Tennessee forewall played a much improved game over the North Carolina battle The brightest spot in the Volunteer loss was the outstanding performance turned in by Kid Rose candidate for one of the all-conference end positions The sturdy Rose played one of the best games of his career and sounded a definite warning that he will be in -the thick of the-battle for Southeastern all-star honors SMITH SNEAKS OVER The game was little more than half a 'quarter old before the Red Elephant had dented the goal line with Riley Smith quarterback sneaking over for the tally This scoring drive started on the Vol 48 yard line after an exchange of punts and never lost momentum until Smith's cleats had been planted behind the double stripes passing was one of the features of the 52 yard drive Once he passed to Paul (Bear) Bryant whose leg was supposed to have been broken in the Mississippi State game last week for 21 yards placing the ball on 21 Rose smeared Nesbit for no gain and then tossed Stapp for a five-yard loss but Stapp faded back and shot a pass down the side to Bryant who threw a lateral to Riley Smith good for a first down on Tennessee's four yard line After the Vol forwards had stopped the first two assaults Smith sneaked over center for a touchdown but Frank Crawford blocked the try for extra point Alabama's second touchdown followed a sustained drive for 55 yards midway in the second quarter with the Red Elephants taking the ball on their own 45-yard line after an exchange of punts Young Boozer Joe Riley and Bub ber -Nesbit played the leading roles in this thrust with Boozer skirting the ends Riley passing and Nesbit ramming the line The Tidemen mixed their plays well with a lot of deception DEFENSE STIFFENS After moving to a first down on the Tennessee six-yard line the Vol defense stiffened temporarily and it appeared that a touchdown might be staved off Nesbit picked up two yards but Palmer threw Boozer for a three-yard loss Then Joe Riley one of the Tide heroes ran wide around his own right end behind perfect interference for a touchdown Rudy Rohrdanz another one of the Alabama much for Dutra whose card included three fives Revolta was given a great battle by Jimmy Hines before a short approach on the 18th cost Hines the macth Sam Parks also ran up against a buzz-saw Francis 30000 Duke punted nine four times Tech Tech line and backs that seemed to get better as the game progressed For three periods the breaks were with Duke but they take advantage Poor judgment fumbles SHREVEPORT La Oct 19 UP) A desperately fighting University of Arkansas football team came down out of the Ozarks today and staged a brilliant aerial exhibition before 10000 spectators only to be beaten by Louisiana State more powerful team 13 to 7 The scar let-jerseyed Razorbacks came within an ace of imitating so many underdog teams this season and kicking pre-game dope sky high but quite make the grade and Louisiana State which had been figured a victor by an easy margin hammered out its triumph in a tussle packed with thrills The Tigers had heard that the Porkers were planning to
