TAGE TWO THE KNOXVILLE JOURNAL SUNDAY MARCH 14 1943 SECTION TWO Leagues Start Back -Yard Spring Trainin Tomorrow ajor MFMCMIL SCMIEIMJILIE IFdDUB IMS SOUTHERN ASSOCIATION OF BASEBALL CLUBS School Kids Can Play In Park DETROIT March 13 Manager Jack Zeller of the Detroit Tigers announced today that Briggs Stadium wouldbe thrown open this summer to young players in Detroit organized amateur leagues for Sunday games when the Tigers are away Furthermore he said the Tigers would school the best young talent in midweek classes conducted by their ace scout A (Wish) Egan No longer able to provide the gas tank and good tires every hard-working scout requires the Tigers In effect are not going to beat the bushes for talent but instead they will bring the players to the scouts are interested primarily in developing boys 14 to 17 years old" Zeller declared they are good prospects offer them contracts Then if they go into the service have baseball jobs to come back to after the Zeller "said the club would have possibly four scouts working in this program Several years ago the Tigers had 12 full-time ivory hunters on the payroll who traveled an estimated 150000 miles annually in search of Hank Greenbergs and Schoolboy Rowes Ed Barrow Is Peeved NEW" YORK March 13 Ed Barrow president of the New York Yankees tonight described a the suggestion that the recent deal between his club and the Philadelphia Phillies might be canceled because Pitcher A1 Grettel did not intend to report to the National League club was a straight trade with each club taking upon it the responsibility of signing the players it acquired If first baseman Nick Etten doesn't join us we are out two ball players and he declared Etten came to the Yankees for Gettel and first baseman Ed Levy plus the cash Manager Bucky Harris of the Phils said he had received word from Gettell that he intended to stay on his Norfolk Va farm this season Harris intimated that the deal might be cancelled or taken to Commissioner Landis for a ruling if Levy also failed to re port All-Star Game July 9 In City Which Leads League After July 4 Games Half-Million Man Miles Of Travel To Be Saved By Southern Gravity And Rotation Affect Track And Field Records Stanford Prof Asserts Long Undies Necessary For Athletes By JUDSON BAILEY- NEW YORK March 13 WV-Spring training for 10 of the 18 major league baseball clubs will start Monday and even though the glamor and gloss is gone the sessions are likely tb'be the most important preliminaries in many years This is because "the lineups of every club have been riddled by calls to military service and to essential war work leaving the managers with innumerable problems to be solved before the National and American League schedules open generally April 21 The teams getting under way tomorrow and their training sites are: Cardinals at Cairo 111 Reds at Bloomington Ind Tigers at Evansville Ind Browns at Cape Girardeau Mo Giants at Lake-wood Dodgers at Bear Mountain Yankees (bat-terymen only) at Asbury Park Phils at Hershey Pa Senators at College Park Md and Indians at Lafayette Ind Other clubs will start in this order: March 18 White Sox at French Lick Ind and Pirates at Muncie Ind March 20 Athletics (batterymen only) at Wilmington Del March 21 Cubs at French Lick Ind March 22 Braves at Wallingford Conn and Red Sox at Medford Mass Most of the clubs will spend only two or three weeks at these bases and face the prospect of curtailed workouts subject to the vagaries of the weather in the area north of the Potomac and Ohio Rivers to which the major leagues have limited themselves Consequently there will be bo frills to training this year Some of the practice will be done indoors Several of the diamonds outdoors are makeshift affairs laid out on golf courses or vacant fields Some of the hotels are overgrown boarding houses At soms of the sites the athletes will have to walk a mile or more to practice Long underwear will be necessary at several camps The contrast with the easy days in Florida and Southern California is evident But what is more important is the fact that the clubs are going to camp with 25 or 30 players instead of the 40 they used to take and some of the gaps In the rosters are of awesome size The world champion St Louis Cardinals have to fill vacancies left by pitcher Johnny Beasley their world series star and by 6 utfielders Enos (Country) Slaughter and Terry Moore The New York Yankees American League pennant winners must replace outfielders Joe DiMaggio and Tom Henrich infielders Buddy Hassett Red Rolfe and Phil Rizzuto and pitcher Red Ruffing The Boston Red Sox must look to the future without outfielders Ted Williams Dom DiMaggio and Lou Finney and infielder Johnny Pesky Other clubs have been hit about equally as hard right down the line and some of them have situations complicated by holdouts or by other factors which will keep some of their most important players from being present when the camps open The Brooklyn Dodgers for Instance have seen outfielder Pete Reiser and infielder Pewee Reese enter the Army and are not cer--tain whether outfielder Dixie Walker a recreation director for a war plant First baseman Dolph Camilli also a California rancher has been detained on the coast and will miss Bear Mountain Training camp altogether The New York Giants have lost first baseman Johnny Mize and catcher Harry Danning has been reclassified 1-A in the draft Problems such as these are typical of all the clubs as they prepare for their second season in the second World War and they make the outlook of the pennant races entirely confuting The Cardinals and Yankees appear likely to reach the inaugural games next month again favored for the titles but naturally there is no way to predict which of their important players may be called to service during the progress of the season Twelve Crax Are Unsigned ATLANTA March 13 Eleven planters of Southern Association drackers have signed contracts leaving 12 oth ers to line up for the 1943 baseball campaign President Earl Mann announced today Mann also announced the sign-ing of Horace Montegue an in-fielder and Lefty Cocart a pitcher from the disbanded Coastal Plain League TONY MUSTO LOSES-WASHINGTON March 13- VP) Walker lanky Columbus Ohio heavyweight easily outpointed Tony Musto veteran Chicago battler in a 10-round bout here last night Walker weighed 189 Musto 199 He cites these additional examples: Discus and hammer throwers would do proportionately better and the javelin thrower could expect to top his more northerly marks by a foot or more By going on to the equator northern athletes could expect to add still more distance to their mark another inch for the shot putter and so on Then if they performed on a mountain of medium height along the equator they could expect another like increase assuming their efforts were uniform in all cases A well-thrown hammer should go 4H inches farther in Tokyo than in Helskini and 7 or inches farther in Java than in Finland A broad jump the jumper this time being the projectile should be good for three-eighths of an thing of a push on its own account and partly to the fact that the earth goes on moving while the weight is in the air and may be running away from the or coming to meet it depending upon the direction of throwing" The extremes of these phenomena are experienced along the equator where the earth's spin exerts its greatest influence and gravitational pull is weakest This permits a relatively slow fall of the projective to earth and allows global spin or centrifugal force to work its maximum effect Gravity is weakest at the equator because among other things the distance between the surface and the center of the earth or gravitational center is greatest there It is strongest at the poles because for one reason the earth is slightly flattened at those extremities and the surface is relatively closer to the gravitational center Even the variation in gravity between sea level and mountain altitudes can make some difference in the flight of athletic projectiles Prof Kirkpatrick adds Looking at all these factors the scientist states that a shot putter from the Finnish coast who goes to Rome or Hong Kong for competition can be reasonably certain that a heave which would have yielded 50 feet at home will be good for an extra inch in the more southerly latitudes Card Skipper Goes To Cairo COLUMBUS Ohio March 13 -Billy (The Kid) Southworth 6kipper of the World Champion St Louis Cardinals headed tonight for Cairo 111 where his Red Birds open spring training Monday Several suits of long heavy Underwear were tucked away in trunk indicating he was ready for any icy blasts blowing around the confluence of the Ohio and the Mississippi Duration Baseball Is Approved For Majors Southworth had some interest tag things to say about wartime more promising daily -with pros-baseball To wit IVint amnio material will Hp have baseball and good baseball too this year Of course some of the stars will be missed But forget this where there is competition certain to the birth of new stars Either father time or war takes away outstanding performers but history shows that their places are always capably filled" man power problems are looking pects that ample material will be available for the start of training two weeks hence Special pullman cars will not be available for the teams this year and travel will have to be in whatever cars are available The opening games as previously announced will pit the Atlanta Crackers against the Nashville Vols at Atlanta CHICAGO March 13 MV-A baseball made of non-eritical materials was approved today for the 1943 major league season Commissioner Landis President William Harridge of the American League and Warren Giles of the Cincinnati Reds representing the National League put their approval stamp on a baseball built with a core of reclaimed cork surrounded by reclaimed rubber which in turn is covered with Balata a substance used to coat Norwegian Sport Aces Imprisoned LONDON March 13 Four noted Norwegian athletes including the three Ruud brothers known both in Europe and America for their skiing performances have been placed in a concentration camp for participation in an unsanctioned sports event the Norwegian Telegraph Agency reported today Birger Sigmund and Asbjom Ruud and Johan Haanes the foremost Norwegian tennis player were among a group of 25 athletes rounded up by the Gestapo German occupation authorities forbade the annual ski jumping championships one of big sports events but the contestants assembled secretly at a secluded spot in the mountains and finished their competition However Quisling adherents denounced some of the participants leading to their arrest the Norwegian agency reported Council Planning Boys 9 Canoe Race The Campfire Council will have a canoe race on the Tennessee River providing there is enough Interest shown These races wefe held every year except for the past two years by the organization and great interest was shown in the event Canoes are provided free to the boys entering the race Candidates entering the race must be good swimmers and of school age The distance is about one mile up the river two boys to a canoe Date and time depends largely on the conditions of the river oughbreds a dyed in the wool baseball fan each year would name one or more of his thoroughbreds after some diamond athlete Now it so happens that no race horse was ever named after Paul Richards However a pedigreed pig now fully grown and the property of the late Major Trammell Scott bears the registered name of Paul Richards This high honor unbeknow nto him was bestowed by the members of the umpire staff of the Southern Association Naturally there was no love lost between the umpires and Paul Richards and vice versa Incidentally the tactics of Richards in constantly disagreeing with the umpires kept Major Scott president of the association in hot water that never seemed to cool The umpires with a sense of humor about the entire situation each made a donation of enough money to buy the finest 'pig on Umpire Howard plantation at Boaz Alabama The pig was properly groomed properly registered in the name of Paul Richards bedecked with blue ribbons and with appropri-ale ceremonies on the part of the umpires was turned over to Major Scott as a constant reminder of the former Cracker manager Major Scott was keenly appreciative and greatly enjoyed the entire affair It was agreed to keep the presentation a military secret Now it is revealed for the first time They do say that the pig is allergic to all umpires Each Club Has Seventy Home Tilts ATLANTA March 13 WV Southern Association baseball clubs will save an estimated half million man miles in travel this summer due to a revised schedule President Billy Evans said here today Most of the series will be of five games instead of the customary three or four and clubs will make two trips around the circuit instead of three Long jumps are eliminated and 90 double-headers are listed Seventy home games for each club are provided in the 140-game schedule announced by Evans schedule is a notable example of what can be done when necessity Evans said it will effect tremendous savings In transportation costs in addition to its value in the war Each club will reduce its expenses approximately $15000 by the elimination of the trip around the circuit Evans explained He said also that the Birmingham at New Orleans Memphis at Little Rock and Knoxville at Chattanooga The annual All-Star game will be played July 9 In 1789 the Massachusetts Humane Society started erection of crude huts for the shelter of shipwrecked persons Black Is an unorthodox on the track as in football toggery Black tvir wins a sprint is more than I can is the comment of most coaches who watch him for the first time strictly a power runner and violates all of the accepted standards of style for sprinters In addition to- the 1 sprints Blondy is a steady winner in the broad jump and once volunteered for a leg in the mile relay when a teammate was injured After his coach consented to let him run in the relay and gave him his specific instructions Black turned on the steam all the way to win by 25 yards and instructions because he was that guy was going to catch The first time Black touched a football in a college against Florida in he reversed his field twice in running 58 yards for a touchdown Most important of his 1941 feats may be listed as touchdowns of 75 and 9 yards against Auburn and a total of 168 yards gained on 17 plays an 85-yard touchdown trip against San Francisco a game-winning 45-yard punt return against Florida Injured In pre-season practice Blondy got off to a poor start in the past season but Recovered in time to run 97 yards on a fake punt play against Duquesne return a kickoff 93 yards for an inch more in Texas than in Massachusetts The extreme effect of the east-west influence amounts to about eight-tenths of an inch on the discus ghrown ia the southern United States Artillerymen as well as scientists have known about these influences for 100 years Prof Kirkpatrick says and the aiming of big guns now is corrected accordingly otherwise they would score direct hits only by accident In the case of a gun with a range of 30 miles or more the extreme east-west deviation of the shell could amount to 346 yards in the latitude of the English Channel that is it can shoot that much farther east than west Prof Kirkpatrick first suggested scientific computation of athletic marks six years ago He renewed the suggestion in a recent issue of Science official publication of American scientists golf balls The usualeyarn and horsehide cover complete the job The two leagues specified the balls must conform to the standards of 1939 the last year in which there were no complaints about the resiliency of the ball In the last three years there have been repeated assertions by players and managers that the ball was more deadened than the product in use four seasons ago Manufacturers expect to have the new balls in training camps within two weeks drawing card particularly on the road where the fans flocked to the various parks to boo rather than cheer him That made no difference with Paul just so long as they paid to see him There are those who insist that Richards really believe the umpires were as bad as he made them out through words and pan tomine He was just acting they insisted Richards felt the fans came out to see him put on his umpire baiting act and he just afford to disappoint them If Paul was acting he ultimately overplayed the role The fans who liked his act at first began to fire of it It savored too much of the alibi in a lot of situations Unfortunately for the Atlanta club Paul Richards was too valuable to be in constant trouble with the umpires Over five years he was chased about 40 times fined and very often suspended from three to 10 days The Atlanta club suffered in more ways than one because of the temperament Enough of background in relation to the umpires Now to reveal the secret For years it has been customary to name race horses after star ball players A certain prominent breeder of thor- BOWL UNDER IDEAL should be a global basis for measuring certain athletic feats says Prof Paul Kirkpatrick acting head of Stanford physics department Many official records are inaccurate and some even may be credited to the wrong person he believes because they ignore the influence of the rotation and the variations in gravity on the flying discus the shot the hammer and other athletic projectiles Because of terrestrial forces a sports projectile thrown at the usual angle and traveling eastward will cover more distance along the surface than an identical one traveling westward with the same amount of energy behind it Gravity variations can affect the shot put by one or two inches and in the extreme as much as three inches depending upon the latitude and altitude of the athletic field and can Influence other sports projectiles even more the physicist says Such effects he contends should be taken into consideration as long as athletic officials measure records in fractions down to one-eighth or even one-sixteenth of an inch of the rotation of the earth on its Prof Kirkpatrick explains thrown weight follows ra slightly different path in different latitudes and even at a given spot the trajectory of a weight thrown say eastward differs measurably from that which it would follow if similarly projected toward the north the west or any other point of the compass effects are due partly to the fact that the moving earth gjves the thrown projective some- other score against Ole Miss and wind up his college football career with a 78-yard six-pointer against San Francisco
