Dear me! Alabama tied by little Howard college! You could have knocked me down with a feather when I heard the news still hard to believe It will go down as one of the biggest upsets of the season Tying the Rose Bowl champions will put Howard In the national spotlight as it has never been before The Tide may have suffered a death blow as far as national consideration is concerned for this year I for one hated to hear of the tie because it may detract from the game here October 17 Then too- the Crimsons will have blood in their eyes A smarting team is hard to beat Note This is another story of a series dealing with the many leading Texans Win 10-7 Verdict Before 22000 Fans at Baton Rouge BATON ROUGE La Sept 28 UP) Cracking loose with a smashing offensive at the thud of the opening kick-off the Rice Owls soared to a 10-7 victory tonight over Louisiana State University in a bitterly fought grid battle Played before 22000 tense spectators the game was a repetition to a large extent of the hammer and tongs contests the Owls and Tigers of State have waged the past several years Beginning with a 54-yard kickoff return by the brilliant Bill Wallace that enabled Rice to get the ball in position for a field goal from the 5-yard line Rice followed quickly with a touchdown in the same period by McCauley and an extra point kicked by Sylvester for its points The Texans were unable to score after that but the points were sufficient Louisiana State fighting a dogged uphill battle in the second half hammered over a touchdown on power plays in the fourth quarter and "seemed headed to another when the game ended BATTLE OF TITANS The game was a battle of titans of the Southwest and Southeastern conferences The Texans substantially the same team that played a 9-9 deadlock with last year ieemed to display strength capable of carrying them to conference and national heights The first half was all Rice Louisiana State couldn't seem to get Started on the ground or the air while Wallace and McCauley unleashed speed and power that kept the Tigers backed against their goal line The great Abe Mickal played only a few minutes for Louisiana at the end of the first half and at the close of the game Both times he was unable to connect with receivers for touchdown passes designed to bring victory Crass his substitute turned in a scintillating job of line cracking to stand out in the Tiger backfield Louisiana touchdown was scored just before the end by Seago after Crass had torn through the Rice line to bring the ball to the six-inch mark The Cats were held time after time and the ball went over but as Sylvester tried to kick out of danger Tinsley blocked his punt on the 1-yard -line Seago cracked left tackle and went over later kicking the point Rice was credited with 11 first downs to 9 for LSU Campbell learned to drive and pilot both Then came the World War Campbell joined the Royal Air Corps and remained in the army until 1919 He then started preparations for new assaults on speed records After establishing a few records his family urged him to quit Did he not have fame and fortune? Why continue to play hide-and-seek' with Old Lady Fate? But Campbell replied cannot rest on my few laurels I must continue for the sake of British prestige I must raise the records as high as HIS OLD ELIZABETHAN HOME near Horley in Surrey is one of the show places pf England There he has a valuable collection of antique furniture Beautiful gardens surround the house: nearby is a nine-hole golf course a cinder path also is nearby where his two youngsters Donald and Jean seek to emulate their famous father by setting new lap records on racing bicycles In one of the many large rooms in the house are found his collection of trophies in gold and silver Packed glass cases display these treasures WHEN NOT BEHIND THE wheel of the Bluebird Sir Malcolm may be found carefully driving about the many lanes in England Golf tennis sailing or playing with his dogs take the greater part of his life He breeds Alsatian and Siredale dogs When he can find time to leave his insurance firm Sir Mai' colm participates in pirate treasure hunting expeditions something thrilling hunting he has often said SEARCH OF GOLD Two years ago he went on an ex pedition into the dark regions of Africa He was in search of buried reef of gold in a desert He did not find the gf Id it was buried beneath the many thousands of tons of sand He likes his yachting best the sea is He plays a fair round of golf and a better than average game of tennis ONE SPORTS WRITER ONCE wrote of Campbell: is a complex nature part business man that has enabled him to make a fortune and attain position permitting retirement and part that of a daring hell-roaring romanticist on the other side of his nature and in contrast is that burning desire to continue driving in the face of risk that piles up more and more A QUIET GUY a quiet guy given to taking strolls in the evening with friends They say this is an old English custom and he follows it even in fog and drizzles when Crackers are hunt-ifig a fireside you speak of Segrave immediately the picture of an aristocrat leaps into mind Lockhart's name forever will be associated with the picture of a lovable daring boy who was an engineering genius Keech is to be remembered as a big bluff go to Hell let rip and snort sort of fellow who care whether school kept or not Lee Bible was a hero-worshipper courageous enough to try the mad gamble and pay dearly for it is still another distinct prepossessing personality He has all the poise and bearing of British aristocracy but none of the boyishness of Lockhart nor the likable rough and tumble traits of Keech and he certainly a hero worshipper A PASSION he is as eager as a kid on Christmas morning Going fast is a passion for him His Bluebird per haps because of long association has long since ceased to be simply a ponderous racing machine but rather is an individual to him most striking thing about the British driver is his utter fearlessness His steady nerves never trem ble after any race never has known what nerves are and if he ever had such a thing in his makeup his years of racing long since have obliterated all COEBURN WINS BY SAFETY EAST STONE GAP Va Sept 28 By the narrow margin of a safety East Stone Gap High lost to Coeburn here today 2-0 A blocked punt in the third quarter provided the winning score A clear head a heavy foot and a man who go tearing blindly into danger when he sees it in front of him! That describes Sir Malcolm Campbell the British" speed monarch who has travelled faster in an automobile than any other human being In fact a clear head and a heavy foot were the two prime and most emphatic factors in Sir Malcolm Campbell's success in being the first to travel more than 300 miles per hour SIR MALCOLM CAMPBELL shortly after-his arrival in New York after establishing the land speed record of 30133 miles per hour on the sun-baked salt beds of Utah said he had been besieged with four questions by interviewers They were: What was your most thrilling moment? What sensation does one feel while going 300 miles an hour? Now that you have attained your goal do you intend to set a new goal? Will you continue speed driving? "Ml MOST THRILLING Sir Malcolm writes a very difficult question to answer During the many years I have been seeking speed records I have had many Often I have brushed death often 1 have felt every fibre of my body tingle after setting some record But the most thrilling I will hazard to say was a five-mile ride minus a tire SKIDDED FIVE MILES was at Fanoe Islands Denmark back in 1924 when I was attempting to beat the record which stood at some 150 miles an hour Tires were not so good in those days and at full speed a tire left my front wheel The Bluebird skidded broadside on for five miles that at least was my most narrow escape from seeming certain death the establishment of the 30133 record was also a thrilling moment for the sensations in travelling 300 miles an hour 1 was too busy thinking However it was not of myself I thought about how the early adventurers must have felt fearing they might come to the edge of the world and fall off I could feel the rotundity of the earth as though I were driving over the top of a large ball only thing I could see at that speed was the black oil line marking the course on the salt beds and then I could see it for but 100 yards at a time SAY can't say right now whether will continue speed driving or whether I will quit wanted to boost the record 9s high as possible to assure British supremacy well Into the future If I can convince myself this record will stand for some time I may MANX CLOSE FRIENDS OF SIR Malcolm have been quoted as saying will never quit driving until he is confident the record will give the British supremacy for years to Other friends however have said "Campbell soon will retire from speed driving upon the request of his Lady Campbell has openly expressed the hope that her husband will quit now that he has set the record of 30133 miles per hour IS THIS MAN WHO HAS BEEN classed as the without superstitious? He pretends not to be but his closest friends say He regards Friday as a bad day to race he refuses to walk under a ladder and dislikes the number 13 Outside these three things nothing bothers him -Friends recall that In one of his earlier races Campbell upon arriv mg at the garage found his racer parked beside a hearse prob abiy need them a wise-guy said Campbell grinned jumped into the car and then-went out to set a new track record JUST WHO IS THIS SIR MAL-colm Campbell?
