THE BAPTIST 633 and Deacons of our Churches circulate sub- scriptions and take up collections in this and other States for our relief? occasion We would be happy brethren of seeing as many of you present at that time as possibly can make it convenient to do so We also desire an interest in the prayers of our brethren that the Lord may be with us and that we may have a refreshing season from his divine and holy presence Signed by order of the Church MASSENGALE HUMPHREY HALL BECK Committee Grenada Miss May 15 1846 SELECTIONS For The Baptist TO THE PUBLIC On the 7th day of May inst our town was visited by a most awful tornado which annihilated every building in its track killing 21 of our citizens and wounding 60 others leaving many families destitute of every comfort and without homes The buildings and other property destroyed estimated at 65 or The Baptist Church of this place shared in the calamity in the loss of their house of worship a large and noble edifice which cost us nearly eight years toil and about in money At a meeting of the members of the Church on Saturday last a resolution was passed to re-build said Church as soon as practicable and the subscribers were appointed a committee to solicit and receive subscriptions and donations for that purpose also to publish an address to solicit the aid of a generous and benevolent public and of our Baptist brethren particularly in this work We presume a calamity so fatal in its consequences to human life and of such ruinous tendency on property for the size of our town is unprecedented in the States The gentlest zephyr wafts the cries of the needy and distressed to our ears We hear the piteous mourning of the afflicted and see those that are left without house and home groping amid the pile of ruins to save what is left beneath the rubbish Surrounded by such scenes the call upon the generous impulses of our community will prevent us from being able to do much in the rearing of our church as well as the fact that some of the wealthiest members have shared largely in the loss of property hence it will be seen that the energies of our church are paralyzed and weighed down by circumstances beyond our control If we can get assistance now many of the brick and other material can be saved from the ruins and used in re-building which otherwise would be useless and unavailing Now fellow-citizens and brethren will yon aid us? Small donations from you which you never would feel will enable us to erect a sanctuary to our God We believe our citizens and our brethren have been liberal in every good work but the late dispensation of Providence has rendered them weak and powerless and we appeal to the public generally and our Baptist brethren particularly and we trust we shall not appeal in vain Donations and subscriptions for this purpose will be thankfully received by the subscribers and may be remitted to them or to Bingham Treasurer of the Church Will not the benevolent and the Pastors ABSTRACT Of the Twenty-first Report of the American Tract Society In the Publishing Department 73 new pub lications have been stereotyped in seven languages making the whole number now on the list 1207 of which 198 are volumes Among them are Dr admirable Exposition of the Ten Commandments Dr Anecdotes for the Family and Social Circle Christian Contemplated A Daughter Dr Edwards' excellent and timely Sabbath Manual No 2 and masterly discussion of the Teachings of Rome as compared with the Holy Scriptures in French There have been printed during the year 364100 volumes 4922000 publications 116173000 pages and circulated 366006 volumes 5153893 publications 123643593 pages otal circulation since the formation of the Society 2859649 volumes 84122133 publications 1667696401 pages Twelve thousand copies of Call have been printed in large and twenty-one thousand in smaller type during the year 33000 of the Sabbath Manual 2S 000 volumes in German 6000 in French 4000 in Welsh The monthly newspaper the American Messenger has been enlarged and has 40000 subscribers It is gratifying to observe that while the volume circulation has been gradually increasing for a series of years the circulation of pamphlet Tracts is not diminished The average circulation of Tracts for several years has been about thirty millions of pages The Grants of publications have exceeded those of former years by 3000000 pages Members and directors have drawn 3830260 pages 2G8749S6 pages have been forwarded to foreign and home missionary stations and chaplains in our own and foreign ports or scattered along the lakes canals and rivers or distributed in Sabbath-schools and from house to house by colporteurs or by Auxiliary Societies Colporteurs and agents have personally distributed nearly 18000000 of pages The receipts for the year have been of which are the proceeds of sales The donations show an increase of over the previous year Those received for colportage exceeded for foreign distribution The expenditures have just equalled the.
