Within two years, this latter route will be shorter in distance, better located from a highway standpoint, and paved with a much higher type paving.

These advantages will give it prestige over the present route. We have also started construction on the route from Nashville through Centerville to Linden, Lexington and Jaokeon, which is much shorter than the present No. 1 through Dlokeon, Waverly and Huntington, and the former route will therefore be the more popular for the reasons aa stated shove. I simply call your attention to these facts because the process of evolution applies to highway construction just a a it doea to all of the other inductile-In which man Is engaged. The preeent status of paving of Rpute 1 includes 191 miles of cement concrete highway, 42 miles of rock asphalt Lighway, 10 miles of bituminous concrete and 177 miles of bituminous macadam.

These are all of the high type of pavement In addition, about 100 miles are of low type pavement (surface treated) and 12 miles gravelled and $0 miles graded. Thus about 76 per cent of Routs 1 has high type pavement about 17 per cent has low type pavement, and only about 3 per oent Is still un paved. Route 1, the Austin Feay Memorial Highway, Route 15 (Th Broadway of Tennessee), and some of the other main routes get renewed construction work swarded in each oon-tract letting, and it Is ths purpose of the highway commissioner, he made plain, to. develop these routes aa quickly as possible in full keeping with their importance and traffic loads. The young Georgian noble was much upset over the persistence of reports that there is an estrangement between his wife and himself and that mutual divorce action Is contemplated.

He denounced such reports as absurd saying they were being circulated by personal enemteswhowlshed to embarrass him. Our married life is Ideal In every respect," said th Prince. Science Finds Way To Bar Destructive Germs From Preserved Food One of the hardest battles that science has ever had to fight, and the most Important so far as the welfare of mankind is concerned, Is the struggle against harmful bacteria. In this long fight, science has found out many things about bacteria and their habit and relationship to human beings. One of the most interesting is the fact that there are scores and even hundreds of different kinds of bacteria surrounding us every hour hour of every day.

No matter how tightly we may close our doors and windows, or how clean the house may be, these tiny, beings float right In through the air, or are carried into the home, in uncounted millions, on our bodies, clothing, ato. Ti'V-i'-t Music Service At Central Baptist On Sunday Night at as of of locate every verse that la quoted in this lesson. Some of the bacteria that invade our homes and take up their residence. there produce spoilage In food, such aa the souring of milk. They ar to be blamed for th annual loss of millions of dollars worth of fruit and vegetables which might havs gone to 1 feed hungry mankind.

Against these particular food germs, science has waked Intensive and merciless war. It has been found that certain chemloals retard the action of these bacteria in But these chemicals ar thefnselves harmful to the human body particularly the digestive organa so that they can be used only sparingly, if at alL Many of them are strictly prohibited by law, and the use of others Ilka benzoate of soda Is closely regulated. In recent years, Investigators have found that there are two way of barring these germs from food and so pressrvlng it for long periods. One way is through creating a vacuum; the other is by the used of heat, and effective leaL For ordinary household purposes, th latter la by far the most convenient and practical. It has been proved (hat the germs which causa food to spoil cannot stand intense heat Whan fruit and vegetables ar heated to the boiling point and kept at that temperature for a while, all the bacteria ar killed, and other will not enter so long as th food is hot.

This make it a fairly simple matter for the modern housewife to preserve her fruits and vegetables by corrsctly sealing while hot Perhaps the beet way to be sure of keeping an air tight, mold-proof seal that will effectively prevent contamination and souring is to observe the following directions: A apse gt least Vi Inch should be left at top of glass for proper paraffining. As soon as each batch is poured, cover immediately with a thin coating of hot malted par-' affln right on top of the hot jelly or jam. This protects it at once. Malted paraffin does not mix with the jam or Jelly but floats on top of it Seal again when cold. After jelly or jam Is or next day, add a heavier coating of hot tatlU-ed paraffin and roll each glass to make a perfect seat This double coating keeps jams and jellies perfectly for dny length of time.

Food prepared this way can be kept fresh and sweat for months and even And the process Is very eaay and inexpensive. Par-ewax can be obtained in pound packages from any grocery store or drug store at a nominal cast This use of paraffin wax represents one more victory for applied science over the omnipresent bao-teria. Time will' doubtless produce more, and mankind will happier and healthier for them. HAZARD, Kjr Aug. 17.

Best of references must be given. Phone 274. The total estimated coat for the permanent improvement of Route 1, the Memphts-to-Bristol highway, which has been designated as the Broadway of America, Tennessee section, is around $8,060,000, accord Ing to state highway department figures based upon plans for paving this highway and construction already under way. The Broadway of America meeting in Nashville recently was very much heartened by the information given out from, the office of Highway Commissioner Harry S. Berry to the effect that a schedule for covering with high type paving all section of Route 1 has been completed, and that the department is thoroughly committed to the paving of this entire highway from Memphis to Bristol.

Pointing Out that the normal traffic on tola highway, quit apart from its designation a part of a big trans-continental routs, merits paving all along its length jnst aa soon aa this can be accomplished. Commissioner Berry wrote Charles H. Peay, secretary of the Nashville Automobile Club, as follows: There la one thing that I desire to particularly impress upon you, and that is the type of road that is being constructed today is so far superior to the accepted types of three years ago that- these latter types now belong to a secondary classification. Many of the sections of No. 1 were constructed of penetration type sixteen feet In width co that an extensive reconstruction program will be necessary before these sections of highway could be brought up to the standard of a trans-continental route.

I also desire to call your attention to the fact that the present No. 1 from Cross vllle to Nashville will be a far less populdr and far less serviceable route than the Crossvllle Wateb Food Values In Selecting Summer Diet Every woman knows that when the mercury starts flirting with the century mark something happens to her familys appetites. These are the sorts of foods that appeal to us during the hoi summer months and tost it is right we should sat at this time. But, learns the Household Science Institute, there Is one danger that should be guarded against in planning the ideal hot weather regimen.

That la, in not getting sufficient real nourishment. Valuable and necessary as vegetables are for their minerals and vitamins, they do not contain too essential bodybuilding materials that children need to keep on growing and adults need to keep up their usual program of activities. A considerable amount of th enervation and lassitude which people feir after heat wave of. several days coyld probably be traced to their attempting to live solely on light foods. On way of solving the hot weather food problem Is to omit heavy foods, such as beans, much meat, gravies, potatoes and heavy puddings, replacing them with foods which are light but which also contain ths same body-building qualities of the heavier This means drinking plenty of fresh milk and also eating abundantly of foods containing skim milk 'solids, bread, cake, cheese, cookies and Ice cream Skim milk solids are milk with the fats and ths water removed.
