Marshall looked good In winning from but that was to be expected, for Heetion No. 5 is one of the weakest district.s in the state this year. Murff, Harris and Rogers did most of the ball carying for the Marshall crew, but the Mavericks did not opcti up with their game as they u.xually do.

They saved considerable for the semifinal game, and it IS better than a 2 -to-l bet that the Mavericks will be in the finals this year. That fact, has been aticKing out like a sore thumb ever Hinee the defeat of Athens by the Maverick crew. That was the hard rd game Marshall had to piay in ito battle toward the finals. If and the west Texas champion should meet in the finals, we know' of no better place to stage the game than Waco. Such a game here would draxv 15,000 fans.

The neighboring cities would send hundreds, but then the west Texas titleholder has not defeated Cleburne as and ms', not do so. FRENCH LICK SPRINGS. On oci aaioa, Rogers raced around or 73 yards and a touchdown. nother, the brilliant Murff reversed Ih. field and ped 41 yards for a touchdown.

A run by Rog- i made possible another touriidown, although he was downed trom behind on the JO-yard line. Thorc Marshal! boys can step once they gel in a broken field, but in the finals they are not apt to get a broken oft II. The Marshall team i.s too light for a champiombip club, and if Reil Willis leads his team to title this scar he will have per' formed what might he termed a football miracle. The Marshall team of tl is year lacks considerable of ag as strong as the potverful Mar- hall team of 1926 which lost to the V. aco high Tigers in the semifinals, 9 to 0 It is quite unusual, but it is a (act nevertheless that the dope in- oicalea that the poorest of the four champions in north and central Texas is better than the best In Sections 5, 6 7 and S.

However, a game between Marshall and Sunset w'ould be quite a battle. A close study of the play-by-play port of the Ciebume-Sunset game indicates that Cleburne was very fortunate to win that game. Cleburne made 11 first downs, and' Sunset made 18. but instead of displaying its weakness in winning the bare 12-6 victory. Cleburne demonstrated just how strong It really is.

Jimmy Strickland, the best guard in the district, and captain of the team was unable to play. He is 20 per cent of the Cleburne line. Seaman Squyres. puiitmg sensation, and star veteran 000.000 w'orth of narcotica in hcr pos- threat man waa unable to play. He is 60 per cent of backfield, session.

Meanwhile. Mr, Banton, who said several days ago that he had built up an airtight case of circumstantial evidence in the homicide investigation, was completing an examination of papers taken from safe deposit boxes and from files in the slain home. yet with both of these players out of tho game, the Cleburne boys battled to victory, and while Sunset gave the Jackets a mighty battle, there never was much doubt as to the outcome. For instance.

Clebumc led at the half, 6 to 0 and bad 12 points before Sunset scored its first and only touchdown in the fourth quarter. Cleburne was rather fortunate to get the first score. McLemore fumbled the opening klckoff, and Cleburne recovered on the 2-yard line. A touchdown was then made by Taylor, the running Ftar of the game, but even had that score not been made, and the game bad closed a 6 -to -6 tie, Cleburne would have gained the verdict, for the Jackets pierced the Sunset ard line than the earned the ball the Cleburne ard line. (tood Break for Jai'kets May Solve Other Crimes Mr.

Tuttle, whose evidence In the narcotic investigation was based on documents seized at Rothstein's offices, said that thorough Inspection ot that material also may provide answers to other unsolved crimes. In one of ten folders seized, he It is fortunate, however for the Jackets that they were meeting Sunset Friday instead of the champion of the Oil Belt or the Panhandle champion, AVjthout Strickland and Squyres Cleburne could hardly have an even chance of defeating either Amarillo or Abilene, and the chances of Clebume entering the final brack- depends largely on how badly Seaman Squyres is hurt, and badly Strickland is hurt. To win the final game, Clebume must open up with its aexial attack. The Jackets will be outweighed, and tire game of this week. In our opinion, will really be the championship game.

If Squyres is unable to play, we can see little hope for the Jaidiets. With the entire Clebume team In the best of condition, the Jackets certainly have no better than an even chance. If Clebume plays Abilene, the game must be staged in Abilene. That 8 another handicap. champion of the state In basketball In 1927, and a seml- finaiist last Is apt to bob up with another strung team this year. -0 Roy Henderson, director of the Interscholastic league, witnessed the game between Clebume and Sunset in Dallas last h'riday. Hender.son is no doubt gratified that he will not be forced to return to the Waco Tiger banquet for the fourth consecutive year to present the inter- schol.astic trophy. AVe had almost learned speech, and personally we are a bit sorry that he wilt not return this year. We never did quite catch the la.st three or four lines.

However, it must he said in Henderson's behalf that he is far better equipped to make the speech of presentation than some of the other members of the board. If we remember correctly it was Hr. Law, who made the presentation speiH'h here In and hfs effort was terrible. Ho seemed to forget what he was supposed to do. 0- We now have with us a mythical All-Southern football selection.

It is very, very interesting. U.has been: sent to us with the statement that it is the composite pick of so many scribes. W'c have an idea that it is merely the selection of one man, who wanted to give the Southw'est conference some recognition on this team for the first tune. His idea was commendable, but lua judgment was not 80 good. Here is the team, which includes football players of all southern states; Vansickle, Florida and Abernathy, Vanderbilt, ends; Brown, Texas and Williams, T.

C. tackles; Tripp, Tennessee, and Sanders, S. M. guards; Fund, Georgia Tech, center; Crabtree. Florida, quarterback; Mizell, Georgia Tech and Banker.

Tulane, halves; Burgess, Texas A. and fullback. O' O' But for the fullback selection, it a splendid team. We do not any scribe from the state I of Texas recommended Burgess I as the fullback on the mythical team. We do not believe Burgess made the first team on any All- Southwestern conferetice seleet- tlon.

He had a chance at the beginning of the season, hut Injuries handicapped his efforts. We certainly do not helelve that Burgess of the Aggies was the i star during the past season that Lumpkin of Ueorgfa Tech I We kick much on the other selections. The fact that Sanders has been selected on two All-America teams and on the All-Southern team i demonstrates that publicity is as val- I uable as the merits of a player. Now Sanders is a star, but not the guard that Botchey Koch of Baylor was during the pa.st season. Furthermore on this All-Kouth- ern team, Furadeaux, the Baylor center, lacked only one vote of tying Fund of (Georgia Tech for first honors.

Petty of A. and M. lacked only two of reclvlng as many as did Vansickle. nathy of Vanderbilt was undoubt- Iv the best end In tho south for the year. Howard Payne closed one of the I most successful Texas conference F.ea«ons when it defeated Simmon.s university Friday by a score of 16 7.

The game also closed a most miserable season for Simmons, which started with the brightest of hopes. Simmons not only had hopes of winning the Texas conference title, but was of at least splitting! even In its two games with the Southwestern conference rivals, T. C. U. and S.

M. U. Simmons also had hopes of becoming a member of the Southwest conference. However, Simmons not only lost the two tilts the Southwest conference mem- I bers but dropped three out of the five Texas conference games played, finishing in the second division. hiij has As coHi'h of Hcv.ard fir.st year Joe Bailey Cheaney done remarkably well.

Howard Payne lost one game, and that to the S. M. U. Mustangs when the Ponies were in top torm. Howard Payne won from McMurray, S.

Marco; normal, Austin college, St. Trinity, St. Sam Houston Southwestemr and Simmons. The St. team finished second In the Texas conference race, losing onl.v one game, and that to Howard Payne.

At times the Saints had unbelievable power. They won from Simmons by a score of to 0 and defeated the Rice Owls, to 0. Cecil Grigg. couching his first year at Austin college, also did well. He was not expected to have anything waa not expected to win a confer- ince game, but managed to win two, defeating' both Simmons and Trinity.

As a result of these victories, the Kangaroos finished in a tie with Simmons for tho season. The Moore that the DHlla.s ba.se- biill team has purchased is not Roy Moore- as fir.st announced but Jfm Moore who played with Kansas City last year, and who is said to be a star hitter. He can be such a wonderful ball player, however, or the have kept him. least they would have had trouble waiving him out of the league. Victor Davis, Dallas acrlbe, states a number ot Waco high players saw the Sunset-Cleburne game, and they were for Sunset to win.

It Is not likely, however, that Coach Tyson was pulling for hunset, and most of the fans of are lor Cleburne In Its battle for the state title. Incidentally the Dallas-Cleburne game must have been a secret or something. It was not broadca.st. If it was nobody here could get it, and when a number of the fans phoned to the Dallas New.s for the score, they were informed that the News employes had been instructed not to give out information eoni-ern- ing the game. It is to h' hoped that no newspaper in Waco will ever adopt such an unfair attitude toward the out-of-clty Victor Davis hints that it Is not an Injury which kept SqujTes out of the game last Friday.

Here is his paragraph: "Looks like next fray betw'ecn Clebume and the Texas champion will bo the state championship game. With Seaman Squyres In the game Cleburne should Without him the team is greatly weakened. It is not likely that Squyres will be used. He is not severely injured, as previous reports said, and Clebume offlcals decline to state why he is not being used. He watched Friday's game from the sido If Squyres Is not being used, because there Is still fear that he is Ineligible, and If he Is really ineligible in the eyes of the league, then every mcmfier of the executive of District No.

Furthermore CUiniiiie may as wi'll use Nquyres this week, and take ehanee on the league drcision. If he Is really ineligible, the fact that he is not used In the hi- dlstrlct games not help cause. Moonlight Ballet ill One Although District Four boasts of several of the outstanding rlayers in the University of Texas Interscholastic league, only four men were unanimous choice for th first team. They were Price and McNutt of Corsicans; Squyre.x of Cleburne and Leyendecker of Waco, These players as well as Pruitt of Waco and Strick- I land, Ireland and T.oylor of Clebume 1 will be named on many an All-State tesSi thi.s year.
