CWA Scholarship Chairman Ruth Oliver has announced that Roger Keith Koehler Jr., has won the 'CWA annual $200 scholarship. .This award is made by an impartial trio of judges, this year consisting of Merle Orchard, Tom Cleland and Mrs. Stephen Geletko. The award is based on ambition, need and scholarship. All graduates residing either in Calpella or Redwood Valley are eligible. Keith has held offices of steward, gatekeeper and lecturer in the Junior Grange. In the Subordinate Grange he has been steward and gatekeeper. He has also been chairman of the Youth Committee. All these offices were in the Redwood Valley Grange. Membership in the Grange is not a requisite for the award; though when such an active , Grange member does win the award the Grange itself is very proud. Keith is entering Willamette University in Salem, Ore., whose classes will begin Sept. 26. He will report on Aug. 28 for indoctrination. His major is to be Music Education. Keith is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Roger Keith Koehler, active Grange members. Roger Koehler is employed by the Pacific Telephone and Telegraph Company of Ukiah.. Six 4-H members from Mendocino and Lake counties will leave for Japan July 20 for 33 days of fun, adventure and learning of the ways of an oriental culture. Joining the 125-member California 4-H delegation are Bonnie Branscomb, Fort Bragg Eager Beavers 4-H Club; Heidi Emmerling and Brett Fredricks, Pamalan 4-H Club; Claire Leve, Ukiah Shamrock 4- H Club; Julie McGuire, Anderson Valley 4-H Club; and Vicki Neasham, Scotts Valley 4- H Club. Mrs. Dorothy Halliday, a 4-H leader from Point Arena, will accompany the delegation as a group leader. These young people are participating in the second half of a two-way exchange program that began last summer with the visit of Japanese boys and girls in California 4-H member's homes. The Japanese visitors were sponsored by the Labo International Exchange Foundation, a non-profit Japanese organization Air tanker drop area established The U.S. Bureau of Land Management in cooperation with the California Division of Forestry has set aside a ridge in the Cow Mountain Recreation Area where bombers can safely drop unused fire retardant. The ridge is located west of the Mendo-Rock road between Willow Creek Campground and Mayacmas Campground. Visitors to the north end of Cow Mountain are advised to use extra .caution when traveling in or near the retardant drop area. Throughout the summer, it is necessary for bombers to dump loads of retardant that are not used on fires. This must be done before the planes can land. Prior to this year, the drops were made over inaccessible brushland on Cow Mountain. The retardant does have fertilizing value which can be of benefit to ridgetop brush con- Version projects. Drops are being made along the ridge in the converted areas. The retardant is dropped from approximately 200 feet and falls as a mist. dedicated to the promotion of international friendship and cultural exchange programs. A major emphasis of this exchange program is the home- stay visit., The 4-H member- exchangees will each spend three weeks living with a Japanese family, participating in their daily activities,- and learning their customs and traditions..For some of these 4- H members, this will be a continuation of friendships begun last summer. They have been assigned to the families of the young people that visited their California homes one year ago. These traveling young people lave been preparing for their visit to Japan by corresponding with their host families, studying the Japanese language and reading about Japanese „ customs and cultures. Now that they have received all their "shots", read all the literature, and packed their bags, they are anxious to board the chartered Japanese Air Lines airplane that will fly them and their fellow-delegates to Japan. Alex Gibson, 4-H Youth advisor from Stanislaus is the group coordinator for the trip, and will direct the activities of the youths and the adult leaders who are accompanying the 4-H members.. "We expect to return home with, a better understanding of the Japanese people, their culture, and' their home life," Gibson said, "and along the way most likely will have mastered some of the basic language, and will have improved on the art of wing chopsticks".
