was inBryan thq other many people were discussing the fu ture of the public utility question of the city and the views that I gave to a few of my friends I would like to convey to you and if you see fit you are permitted to publish them During tny stay in Bryan and es pecially during that part' when I was wi(h the city thtr public utility prob lem was a very perplexjng one firstTTbad YiSKWlcntreansewhat was business was no business That matter however has been settled and your plant has been ably managed and shows a healthy profit tach month which money has A been wisely spent by your original council and' new commissioners for 4the betterment of your systems and city in general But is it RIGHT to maintain' a HIGH utility rate and USE THIS MONEY TO DO THINGS THAT THE TAXPAYERS OUGHT TO DO? 1 It is manifestly wrong and there is no argument which will controvert this statement Of course a large taxpayer hold ing much unimproved property is in favor of a very high utility rate and relativley low tax rate but you must consider this matter from The stand point of the resident who comes to your city to own a home and live for the benefits he can derive from thq wonderful school anti college systemX yotl have ih the city of Bryan I dare say that there are today many scores of families whose heads are connected with i college who are driven away from there on account of the high util ity rates One might say no it is because there are no houses Well ou have gotten by that proposition by the forming of the home building association There is one stumbling block to the giving to the people of Bryan a low utility rate and that is municipal ownership The reason that municipal ownership is the stumbling block is that you cannot afford to have invested in your utili ties as much money as should be invested because if you do then your streets and sanitation will suffer You qow have in your water light and sewer system an investment of perhaps $125000' If you buy the Bryan Power company it will cost you $80000 and to put in additional machinery needed it will cost you $40000 more You need a water tower costing $12000 a sewer system on the east side costing $25000 a duplicate eight inch water main from the plant into SGT KEB ran DIED SUDDENLY LATE HYSUI1HI0 Austin April 5 The general emer 1 gency bill carrying appropriations of I $1100394 which was
