July 6 Fresh from his trip to St. Louis, where he ran second In the J50.000 Worlds Fair handicap, Hermis, with 133 pounds up, today won the Test handicap at the opening of the Brighton Beach Racing associations summer meeting and In doing so equalled the track record for one mile by covering the distance in 1:38 flat. The best previous record was made by Voter, a 6-year-old. in 1900, with 122 pounds up.

The victory of Hermis was one of the most popular victories ever scored on an eastern track. As he turned into the stretch, leading by a length, the great crowd began cheering, and xhen victory looked certain a sixteenth of a mil from the wire, the cheering became deafening. It continued fully five minutes and was renewed when Redfern and Hermis returned to the scales. Hermis pulled up lame in his near fore leg Water Boy, in preparation for the Brighton handicap to be run Saturday, worked a mile and a quarter in 2.07 today. First Race Six furlongs.
