(R; 60 min.) 0 O WELCOME BACK. in the spotlight An English classic that for years has captured the imagination of children and also stirred poignant memories in their parents will be encored' when 'Piccadilly Circus' repeats-the Emmy Award-winning 'BALLET SHOES' on PBS in. two parts Tuesday, Dec. 27 and Wednesday, Dec. 28. . • Written by Noel Streatfleld. England's perennial best-selling authoress of children's books, 'Ballet Shoes' was an instant success and has never been out of print 'since it first appeared in the mid-1930s. It has charmed three generations with its insights into the always-wondering and sometimes wonderful world of childhood and is now bejng enjoyed by young readers as far away as Japan and Indonesia. Another honor was accorded the story when this television adaptation of 'Ballet Shoes' won the Emmy Award for best children's special after its initial Yuletide showing on PBS last year. . , The childhood that 'Ballet Shoes' depicts is that of three beguiling orphans—Pauline (Elizabeth Morgan, right). Petrova (Jane Slaughter, left)" and Posy (Sarah Prince, center)—adopted as, babies in that order and more or less by accident by an engagingly dotty professor of archaeology so absent-minded he forgets for years at a time to come home from his fossilr collecting trips. He plucks Pauline from the sea after a shipwreck, Petrova'comes as a gift'from her dying father and Posy, whose ballerina- mother is unable to care for her, is delivered- by messenger with a note and a touching legacy: a pair of ballet shoes. They have no last names and nothing else in common except the elusive professor. As the eldest, Pauline decrees they'll make themselves sisters and with the unarguable logic of childhood, it's decided their family name will be Fossil because the professor collected them. Further, Pauline declares. "We three Fossils vow to try to put our name in history books because it's our very own .and nobody can. say H's because of our grandfathers." V. : At heart Ballet Shoes' is the story-'; of every childhood—its self-doubt, its tumbling array 'bT dreams that seldom come true and its ultimate surrender to the often unpleasant world of adult reality.
