He referred to a telegram from Secretary of the Navy James Por- restal and other federal officials, asking that the Texas allowable be iiiked immediately to 2,000,000 barrels daily to meet needs of the armed forces, the war shipping administration, and essential civilian acorn on y. Highway Commission Leitings Cancelled AUSTIN, March 14.— (iP)— State Highway Engineer D. C. Greer has announced cancellation of the scheduled April 2 and 3 letting of the state highway commission. Bids were to have been received on 43 state and federal road projects involving an estimated cost of five million dollars. A new public works administration policy requires certain contract awards must now be sent to Wash-* ingion for approval, Greer said. Concurrence of the administration has not yet been received for contract award recommendations following the Feb. 19 letting of the commission. It appears that in fairness to the bidders, we should cancel our "It is difficult to understand why I A" 1 '' 1 2 'cttings," Greer said. more crude oil is needed to be pro- "* duced when so much of current crude'production is going into stor- -It seems that the only shortage is in heating and fuel oils. "The OPA price controls have mitigated against producing enough of fuel and heating oiis since OPA was basing prices on gasoline primarily. 'The whole situation would be greatly facilitated and would clear up under the old law of supply and demand. "If the OPA would release crude oil and its products from price controls this abnormal situation would quickly clear itself. The price would cause the byproducts to be made in sufficient quantities, instead of glutting the gasoline mar- | ket in order to supply enough by- \ products."
