W. Cox and County Judge Sergio Gonzalez. Del Rio Marines Hear Talk by Harry Carroll The Del Rio Detachment of the U. S. Marine Corps League held their regular bi-monthly meeting Friday night at the United Civic Organization Hall. Guest speaker for the meeting was Harry W. Carroll, Public Information Officer at Laughlin Air Force Base. Carroll detailed plans for the upcoming Cinco de Mayo celebration and asked the assistance of th'e Marine Corps group in the Mexican Independence Day observance. The Marines are considering sponsoring a candidate in the Cinco de Mayo Queen contest. Carroll also told the ex-Marines of tentative plans formulated earlier Friday in a meeting with Mayor Alfredo Guitierrez, County Judge Sergio Gonzales, Chamber of Commerce President John Dickiehut, and Civic Affairs Committee chairman Tom Sullivan. The local group is hopeful of recreating an old fashioned Fourth of July celebration for Del Rio. If the plans materialize, Moore Park would become the setting for a day of fun for young and old alike on Sunday July 4, when Del Rio joins the nation in celebrating the U. S. Independence Day. Although definite plans have not been formulated, the informal meeting' discussed an agenda which would include on the one hand band concerts, flag raising ceremonies, patriotic speeches by local officials; and on the other, watermelone and pie-eating contests for the kids, games and races for everyone, a . gigantic pancake supper, food and beverage booths of all kinds, and in general a day of good clean wholesome fun for everyone. Another portion of Carroll's talk to the marines dealt with the military services in general and the Air Force in particular as contributors to, rather than users of national resources. Carroll cited the 1.2 million young Air Force personnel returned to civilian life over the past ten years. "These men" he said, "came back into the civilian economy as highly-trained individuals, whereas when they camfe into the Air Force they were, for SPRING IS HERE! THAT'S PORTABLE TIME AT. . .
