Charles Ross Moore is now 71— and has built tht 40 cents into a million dollars. He is head of the Austin Bridge- company and is a recognized dean of the profession. He is a member of Baylor's board of trustees, director of the Pallas chamber of commerce, chairman of the advisory committee on industrial loans for the Federal Reserve bank—but why go on? Born near Waco, he worked on county roads. He fought poverty, and at 23 was still poor. He learned shorthand, typing, got a job with Frank E. Austin of Dallas for $40 a month, took a correspondence course in engineering — and in 1918 bought out his boss. He has built bridges in 230 of Texas'254 counties. It grew, and he went into the oil business the hard way by borrowing a rig. His first two attempts failed, but' he finally .struck oil and made his first half-million. He returned to Beaumont, became known as the king of wildcatters, and today : He's head of the McCarthy Oil and Gas company, Beaumont Natural Gas and Absorption Plant, Inc., The Nueccs Natural Gas company, McCarthy Center, Inc., The McCarthy Building company, is a Houston civic leader, chairman of the Houston air advisory committee, and is still going strong.
