(Continued From Pag* 1) Sanders snys many of them linvo a false senso of knowledge nbout road rules for safe driving. They neglect to study the Tcxns Driving Hnndbook ho distributes on request!. The recently revised nook now con- tnins e chapter on driving the ireeways. Most persons flunk the driver test because they fail to keep a proper lookout ttt blind Intersections, take turns with too much speed, and cut corners in making turns, according to Sanders. lie sometimes jams on the car's brakes to keep the driver from hitting someone, or getting hit, nnd he sometimes stops the car at an Intersection when the driver has not shown proper caution. Otherwise, the driver is on his own, One of his applicants showed unusual persistence in obtaining a driver's license, taking the written test 19 times and the driving test six times before passing, Several persons have taken the written test 10 to 12 limes and the driver test five or six times before succeeding. Sanders' peak season is spring and summer. People who drive around here without a license will try for one before going elsewhere on vacation trips. He also handles a large number of students who have completed school driver education courses. He says 99 percent ot hese students pass both tests on the first attempt. Sanders has praise for county school driver education courses. "They teach the youngster :o drive right before someone teaches them to drive wrong The Instructors must take special courses to teach. Students study stopping distances mpact speeds and learn that a car is a deadly weapon." On completion of the schoo' course a youngster of 14 and IE may pass his tests and obtain a driver's license. Otherwise he cannot take the test until he is 16. Until he is 18 he also needs approval of his parents before applying for driver's license tests. .. . . Out-of-state drivers living in the county should obtain a Texas driver's license within 30 days ol establishing residency here. Sanders says many parents seem unaware that their youngsters must be at least 14 years old and obtain a license before operating a motorscooter. The scooter must also have a vehicle inspection sticker, and should be equipped with lights if it is to be ridden at night. 'Parents are violating the law by allowing under-age youngsters to drive a motor- scooter, or to allow those of 14 or older to drive without a license," Sanders warns. "Parents can be filed on for the child's violation." Every two years Sanders goes back to Austin to re-train in policies and procedures on license issuance. At a school in October the groundwork was laid for several changes. Driver License patrolmen suggested rewording of some test questions which people often know but miss because of the wording. Sanders predicts that within two years the patrolmen will be using new eye charts which check depth perception, color blindness, distance judgement, and side sight An applicant's eyes are now checked with a Snelling eye chart at 20 feet of distance. He said drivers may take a more thorough driver test later, one that includes angle parking, going in and out of driveways and parking lots and other practical demonstrations of driving ability.
