One accurate moasufe of an area's growth Is a comparison of the number of natural gas connections at the present time to that of past The development of Draro- rl,i County can bo seen In the growth of Houston Natural Gas System In Urn area. In the past 15 years, the nurn her of maters served by Houa- ton Natural has almost doubled, from 9,000 In 1053 to approximately 17,000 today, a yardstick of the remarkable residential, commercial and Industrial expansion of the area. This growth also reflects Houston Natural's steadily Increasing Investment In the area. This plant has the capacity to recover 22,000 barn-Is a day, about SO^iof which Is ethane for use by Phillips In petrochemical manufacturing operations at Its Sweeny complex about 40 miles awa>. constructed In the past few years to serve new customers and to Increase gas delivery to existing customers. Brazoria County has played an Increasingly Important role In Houston Natural's operations, A natural gas processing and elhylene manufacturing complex jointly owned by UNO Petrochemicals, Inc.. a Houston Natural subsidiary, and Phillips Petroleum Company wont on stream last year, making B razor la County the largest ethylene center In the world. The joint venture Includes the Alvln Plant, where up to a billion cubic feet of natural gas Is processed dally; a products pipeline; an ethane storage cavern; a n d an ethylene manufacturing unit at the Phillips refinery near Old Ocean. The elhylene unil utilizes ethane extracted at Alvln In the annual production of up to 500 million pounds of ethylene, an Intermediate with a wide range of petrochemical applications. Other Houston Natural facilities In Brazoria County Include distribution offices in Freeport, Angleton and West Columbia. Houston Pipe Line Company, also a Houston Natural subsidiary, maintains a transmission office In Angleton. Last year, Houston Natural moved to a new home office at the Houston Natural Gas Building in Houston, and new equipment and long-range planning are resulting in more efficient operations and better service for all Houston Natural customers. The gas company, major tenant In the 28-story office tower, occupies seven tower floors and a public office at ground level. The building is served by a Gas Total Energy Installation, the largest single structure Total Energy facility in the world. Natural gas Is the sole energy source for the office tower and attached 850-car self park garage. Gas fueled prime movers provide electricity for light- Ing, elevator service, air handling equipment awl all other purposes, and the basement-level plant also produces chilled and hot water for the building's cllmatecontrol system. The Gas Control Center operated by the Houston Pipe Line Company provided a dramatic demonstration of the effectiveness of the new facilities. The Gas Control Center, located on the 15th floor of the new building, controls a 2,600 mile transmission system with average dally deliveries of more than one billion cubic feet, The new center utilizes microwave communications and advanced data processing techniques to monitor the pipeline system and to operate by remote control. Only two weeks after the center began operating, its capabilities were challenged by Hurricane Beulah. Winds and torrential rains caused major disruptions in both offshore and onshore production. There was an almost complete breakdown of commercial communications In the affected area. Yet the Gas Control Center was able to maintain radio and telephone communications with operating personnel, and a steady flow of data to the computer allowed the system pulse to be felt at all times* Despite substantial production losses, Houston Pipe Line Line Company maintained alt of its market commitments throughout the hurricane, and even provided distress assistance to other companies whose gas supplies had been curtailed, thus assuring dependable natural gas service to all Houston Natural customers, Proud to participate in the growth and prosperity of our progressive Brazoria County... onstructors, Inc Clute- HIGHWAY 2M CllW 265-2555 DRINK BOTTLED WATER...
