neeeessary to supply the city of Chicago The gas supplied to Chicago however comes from a wide area The pressure on the Bartlesville wells is GOO pouuds per square inch on one and a trifle over 630 on the other These wells are very nearly 1100 feet deep Therefore It seems the flow of the Bartlesville wells is easily sufficient for supplying the demands of Kansas City These wells have been in opera tion since the middle of January and there has not been the faintest indication of diminution in the pressure The stoves and the lights burn continuously day and nieht and the quantity of gas consumed is imperceptible There is more than enough gas now on tap to supply the present -populalation of Bartlesville for the next fifty years conservatively speaking and the field is only in the initiatory stage of development The surplus over the present demand for domestic consumption is sufficient to operate several brick plants and to meet the requirements of half a dozen ordinary manufacturing establishments A writer on the subject of natural gas evidently unfortunate In his experience declares that "for illuminating purposes natural gas has little value The light from an ordinary gas barner is small only about ten candle power and in order to get good results the flame must be so large that the heat would make the illuminated space uncomfortable" The foregoing assertion is likely true of the Indiana and Ohio product and even of Kansas gas but it cannot be said of l3artlesville gas An ordinary burner equipped with an incandescent mantle will consume about two cubic feet of gas per hour giving a light equal to twenty candle power This has been demonstrated by practical tests A gentleman who lives in the gas belt of Pennsylvania was recently in this city and he declared that the Bartlesville gas was the best he had ever seen for illuminating purposes He remarked concerning the entire absence of any odor of the brilliancy of the light and the fact that the resultant heat was hardly noticiable "You people have a fortune in your natural gas" said be "and there isn't the slightest danger of the supply diminishing for many years provided it is properly used" 11 EDDY
